Researching the Stowe family of Great Broughton
Any information gratefully received.

Hi hexhamlad.
Welcome to Roots. :)
Are you able to give a time scale and whether it is possibly Great Brington
rather than Great Broughton you are researching.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply, the village is, as you suggest, Great Brington.
My interest in the Stowe family is mainly in Lois Stowe who married my Uncle James McBride in about 1926, he was in service as a chauffeur to the 6th Earl Spencer at Althorp, having previously served through World war 1 in the Royal Irish Rifles, badly wounded at Paschendale, he recovered and went back to the front line, he sadly died prematurely in 1938.

Hi Eddie.
You are most welcome. :)
I have most of the Parish Registers so if you need any more looking up
just shout.
I also have all the readable graves in the churchyard, one I think is Lois
although it may already be known to yourselves.

Hi Eddie
Came upon your posting by chance when looking for something completely different, as is often the way.
Lois Mary Stowe was my grandfather's sister and I met her at least once in my life - 1987 at my grandmother's funeral. My grandfather was Ernest Charles Stowe (son of Ernest James who died in WW1) and my grandmother was Mary Margaret Evans - her father incidentally worked as butler at Althorp House until his death in 1930 so more than likely knew your uncle James Parkinson McBride. I was interested to hear that two of James & Lois's three children survive, making them my first cousins once removed I believe!
Please pass on my regards and hope you find this information interesting.
Margaret Ceely (nee Stowe)

Good Evening Margaret,
Thank you very much for your mail, it was kind of you and most interesting. My interest in the Stowe family is that my Uncle, James McBride, married Lois whilst working as a chauffer at Althorp. He was my Mother's brother, the family belonged County Down Northern Ireland and Uncle Jimmie came to England after serving in the Royal Irish Rifles during WW1 where he was wounded at Paschendale but survived. After working for Earl Spencer, he went to London and was chauffer for a Mrs. Morgan, who lived at 1, Hyde Park Gardens, she also had houses in Ireland and on the Isle of Whight. My Uncle was with them on the isle of Whight when he suffered pneumonia and died, aged only 47 in 1938, leaving three small children. After a lot of years research, I was delighted to find James children, Sheila (aged 87) lives in Chesham, Pat (aged 85 lives in Overstone and Jim Jnr lived in Crawley but sadly passed away in 2012.
My wife and I visited Great Brinngton in 2012 and saw Lois's grave and also the thatched house where the Stowe family lived, also the war memorial with the Stowe family member recorded. It has given me great joy to find my long lost relative sand I hope you have the same success in your research.
Warmest Regards,
Edward

Thanks for reply Edward.
My sister (who lives in Australia) has reminded me that Jim Junior, son of James and Lois, was in fact our dad's groom when he married mum so they must have been close! She also reminded me that we went to Lois's funeral in 1997 at Gt Brington church, not long after Diana Princess of Wales had hers there, where we definitely met Pat (Lois Patricia) her daughter too.
Val also said that if you were interested her "Stowe" family tree is available for all to see on Ancestry.com and there are lots of Stowes on there. She also sent me this photo of mum and dad's wedding with Jim McBride third from left next to my mum.
Kind regards.

Hi Margaret,
Thank you very much indeed for the wedding photograph, that is brilliant. Although Jim is, sadly, no longer with us, I have forwarded the photograph to his neice who will download it and show it to her Mother and Aunt who are, of course, Jim's Sisters. They had little knowledge of their family tree prior to my delving around researching their Father's side of the family but now, thanks to the amazing parish records at Great Brington and such kind people as yourself we have put quite a few leaves on the branches. Many, many thanks for your info.
Edward
