Title: Alex Bergin Plummer
Post by: augereau on Friday 24 January 14 14:18 GMT (UK)
Hello again rootschatters !
This is a follow-up message to my posting re Kathleen Plummer née Henderson exactly a year ago !
I discovered that Kathleen & her husband Alec Alfred had two sons - the youngest one was Stephen Fane Plummer who died in 1919 aged 2.  The elder one was the above Alex Bergin Plummer.  He would have been born abt 1916 and I have found him on a few ships' crew lists from 1935-1938.
Then he appears on Voters'Lists ... in 1953 living with his parents and his wife Shirley in Caulfeild, Vancouver, BC, address Howe Lane.  In 1962 Shirley is at the same address by herself and in 1968 I found Alex in Victoria, self-employed.
I can't find his marriage to Shirley, I don't have her maiden name , nor can I find their deaths.
Kathleen & Alec Alfred both died in 1958 and are buried in Capiliano View Cemetery, West Vancouver.  I don't seem to be able to access the site to see if anyone else of the family is there too.  Any help would be really appreciated. Many thanks, Liz

The following entry in Shawnigan Lake School Magazine, December 1945, gives their wedding date and Shirley's maiden name:

Plummer-Macdonald — On July 3rd, 1943, at Vancouver, B. C, Lieut. Alexander Bergin Plummer (1927-1932) to Muriel Shirley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vans Macdonald.

There seems to be a second listing for father Alec in 1953 in the Voter's list:
1953  Vancouver Center Alec A Plummer, broker and wife Mrs Alex A
Apt 62  1386 Nicola St.  (Also living there is a Gordon Wismer, broker, and his wife).  Alex Sr (broker), wife and son Alex (marine mate) are at that address in 1940 as well.

In 1965, Alex B and wife Shirley are together on Howe Sound.

As Alex had a brother who died young with the middle name of "Fane", this might be a cousin:  On the 1953 Voter's list for Okanagan BC, there is an A. Fane Plummer, with wife Norah.

Googling Alex Bergin Plummer picked up that he was an active T/Lt in the naval reserve during WW2, commanding  minesweeper HMCS St. Joseph from 4 May 1944 to8 Nov 1945.  As this ship was built in Nanaimo, I'm just guessing that he was just working the west coast of Canada, and not overseas (but I am just guessing!).

None of this particularly helps, but it does help form a time line!

Thanks a million to both of you - I wonder is it possible to know if Alex & Shirley had any children ?
In the photo which one do you think is Shirley.
That is great to have detail of his naval career - Alex seems to have been a salesman after that...

On Alex snr 's death cert, there is the signature of his brother, Anthony F. - so that is probably the connection with the second name Fane.  Their mother's maiden name perhaps...

Shirley is most likely the woman in the middle of the photograph.

Here is the marriage record for Anthony. It gives the full name of his mother.

On the subject of children for Alex and Shirley, birth records in BC are protected beyond 1903 (if I remember correctly) due to privacy laws. You would need to look for a birth announcement in something like a newspaper. The same would be the case for the deaths of Shirley or Alex.... deaths are only available to the public up to about 1987 on the BC Vital Stats website and they were possibly still alive then. Marriage and death records are available to a bit later on the Royal BC Museum
website.

Added: I think the third name of Alice on the marriage record reads Fane but the record for Anthony has the name as Jane?

Thank you very much indeed to everyone for your help - I am disappointed that the BC records don't have later dates - I'll just have to be patient !!
Shawnigan Lake School seems to be a very smart place to be educated...

Concerning AA Plummer's brother Anthony - I found the original Fane Becher dating back to the 1500s and who founded the town of Bandon in Co Cork, Ireland !!!

Many thanks again, Liz

I don't know if you can still get hold of this person (it's a very old post), but it might be worth a try:

The Monica he refers to:  her marriage states that her father is Alfred Edwin Plummer from (Shangford?) Ireland, so not sure how that all fits in.

Many thanks, bbart, for this info - I am sure that the Plummer family did originally come from Ireland. You are right, ancestor hunting is just like a jigsaw puzzle, first of all you have to find the pieces and sometimes it is more difficult to know where to put them !!  Thanks again for your help, Liz

Hi augereau:

This is a bit of a long shot but Shawnigan Lake School is planning for its centennial in 2016. Assuming that alumni records are kept they may be able to provide you with a death date for Alex. B. Plummer.

http://www.shawnigan.ca/centennial

The Shawnigan Lake School website also has their yearbooks online. Alex. B. was at the school from 1927 to 1932. It might not be related, but there was also a student with the same surname who graduated from the school in 1963.

I am new to this site but pretty excited to see some familiar names.  My grandfather was Anthony Fane Plummer, and my mother was cousin to Alex Plummer, of victoria.  Just starting to find the time to build family connections

Hi Sagebrush,

Welcome to Rootschat.  You will be able to use the Rootschat personal message system after three posts.
To the left of augerau's posts, there is a message icon - it is a small circle containing what looks like a piece of paper.  After your third post you will be able to click on this and send her a private message.

Good luck!
Linda

Hello again Sagebrush,

Just to say that I am related to Alex Bergin Plummer's mother, Kathleen nee Henderson.  It took me ages to find out who she had married !  She must have come out to British Columbia from Toronto and Montreal ...  her brother was also living in BC.
With another cousin, we have a family site on the net, and we are trying to find photos of the different characters in the tree.  A great sense of achievement when we manage to match a face to a name !
As your connection is so close to Alex Plummer, perhaps you may have a few old photos !
Hope so !
all the best, Liz

Hello,

Alec Plummer was my grandfather. Happy to connect if you want further information. Both his son, my uncle, and daughter, my mother, are still alive. Curiously, given the information about Fanes founding Bandon, Co Cork, the other side of my family came to Canada from Bandon.

Best,

Howard
