Title: James Caine
Post by: bagpuss on Monday 27 January 14 20:18 GMT (UK)
Hello there fellow Rootschatters,

Could someone please help me identify this family, I've spent ages going through all sorts of records with no luck!  James Caine was born in Ballaugh, 1827 the son of William & Isabella Caine.

I have found the following family tree information on http://hallcaine.com

James Caine b.11 Jan 1825 d.1880
m. 1853
Mary Ann Kewley b.1830 d.1898
Children
Mary Ann - b.abt 1854 - m.abt 1897 - Hugh Wallace
William Henry - b.abt 1856
Isabella Ramsay - b.abt 1858
Eliza Annie - b.abt 1860 d.abt 1940 - m. Ole Tedmanson
Margaret - b.abt 1866
John George - b.abt 1868 d. 1946
Ellen - b.abt 1870
Agnes Helena - b.1875

I should love to add this information to my tree but can find no verification of any of the information stated, I am presuming we are on the IOM but as no place names are included it is possible that he emigrated!!!!

Can anybody help?

All the best,
Sue   :)

Yes, the usual site - anc. Notice a tree on Ellen Nellie Caine 1870 - 1904 married to James Heath Hardy Lewis but not much info on it. You can always see the public trees on the sister site  -

There is a site very good for newspapers - obituaries, marriages etc - not sure if that might help you further

Thank-you KGarrad, that means they must have married in the IOM.  I couldn't find an marriage entry, I'll keep looking.

Yes, great newspaper article Sandra, I've been all the way to the top of the Laxey Wheel too when I visited the Island a few years ago - so I'm really chuffed with this news.  You've done loads of work on my behalf and I'm very grateful.  By the way Hall Caine was the nephew of my 3xGt Grandmother, a very interesting find!  I've been trying to find information on her siblings, his family is well documented, not so for her other siblings unfortunately!

I'll try and digest all this information now and try and get my head around it all.

Many thanks,
Sue   :)

Do you remember the name given to the Laxey Wheel?

The Lady Isabella - named after the wife of the Lt-Governor - hence the proliferation of Isabella's om the Isle of Man.

IoM Civil Registration didn't get under way until 1878 - so ManxBMD will be of no use to you.

Try the iMuseum (.im), click on Family Search.
(I can do newspaper lookups for you - if you visit the actual building, newspaper access is free for 24 hours!)

Also worth trying is the Lawsons micro-site:

Possibility - There is this death record for a John George Caine - aged 73 years - 1946 - South Melbourne, Victoria. (that would mean around 1873 and your John George was 1868  ???)
Registration Number: 7563
This John George and wife Minnie appear to be living at 236 Bridport Street Fawkner Victoria South Melbourne in 1914/1919.  John would be an engine driver.

1931 John George is on his own at 87 Cecil Street South Melbourne - engine driver. (no Minnie listed)

1937 John George at 71 Thistlethwaite Street - engine driver.

1943 John George at 4 Ingles Street - engine driver.

Hi there,

The Victoria BDM certificates are full of very detailed information, and can be downloaded immediately to your computer.  There is a cost, $Au 20.

Here is the Rootschat thread with info as to what to expect on the Vic certs.  (As detailed as Scottish ones, or even more so !)

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,373754.0.html

Sandra has posted the reg. no for John George CAINE's death in 1946.   That reg. no is needed when you go to order the dc.   Of course, death certs are 'second' hand info, so are not as reliable as say a marriage cert.  BUT .... :)

The link to order and download :

Reply 14 had the death of Mrs James Caine - http://www.rootschat.com/links/0xtq/
It said she was living with her daughter at Oakbank.

Louisa Jane Fishlock born 1864 and aged 43 years died at Oakbank 7 th February 1907.
Registration Place: Nairne, South Australia - Page 162 - Vol No 323

Louisa Jane Caine married Richard Fishlock - Blakiston - 24 August 1882 - Registration Place:
Mount Barker, South Australia - Father JAMES CAINE  ;D - Think this is the missing daughter.  ;D

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0xts/

The 5 living daughters - 1898 - would have been Louisa Jane Fishlock (Oakbank) Ellen Nellie Lewis, Agnes Dixon, Mary Ann Wallace and Eliza Ann Tedmanson.

Margaret Caine died 1885 and Isabella Caine/Lehmann 1895

Your original list included 8 children plus Louisa Jane just leaves Number 10 - the  missing son  ???

Would love to find more on William Henry and John George Caine or even confirm the 1946 death might be the correct one.

Blimey - you have been busy, great find with Louisa Jane, well done!

Looking at the birth dates of the children we have it seems that poor Mary Ann gave birth every other year, which gave a gap in 1864 so I searched for all Caine births in 1864 on the site you sent me the link for and came up with -

Cain, Albert James, 1864, Nairne, Parents - James Cain & Mary Ann Kewley, Reg no. 30/520

So you were right about the missing son.  I'll draft a list I can see what I've got and where any missing areas are, so I can get my head around all of this information.

Don't know how I missed that one, I was convinced one would be named after the father, perhaps I was just looking for the name James.  ::) Well done. At least we have all 10 children's names now.
There was a few newspaper reports on a Albert James Caine (age about 40 years  ???) who was killed at South Mine Broken Hill - 18 th October 1910. Inquest mentions a brother John Caine (blacksmith) -  ??? ???

John George Caine was my grandfather. His wife was christened Charity Kellow but she was called "Minnie".  They married in Wesley Church, Perth, Western Australia on January 02, 1912.  They had one son, Wilbur Hall Caine, who was born on 15th June 1915.  Wilbur was born in Albert Park, Melbourne and lived in Melbourne most of his life but he moved to the Gold Coast, Queensland in about 1985 and died there on 17th March, 2013. John and Minnie parted company about 2 years after my father was born and he believed that his father was dead as he had no contact with him at all in his life. He was very surprised when I told him that my research showed that he was living in a neighbouring suburb to him and had died in 1946 in Prince Henry's Hospital (now demolished).
Minnie died in St Kilda on 28th June, 1951. Regarding John's brothers and sisters, Albert James Caine was a miner and was killed in a rock fall in the Broken Hill South Mine on 19th October 1910.  His older brother William Henry Caine died in Broken Hill on 2nd August, 1915 and is buried in the same grave as Albert in the Broken Hill Cemetery.  His death certificate states that the informant for his death was his sister, Mrs A. Dixon.  I have not been able to find any marriage for her, but as stated elsewhere on this site, she appears to have had a child named Constance Ellen "Cane" in 1900 but I can find nothing else on Constance. She also had a son named Jack Dixon who was known to other relatives of mine of the surname Tedmanson, but where he was born I don't know. Agnes Helena Caine died in Adelaide, South Australia on 17th November, 1950 and was buried as "Alice" Helena Dixon.  Her obituary had her christened name of Agnes in parentheses after Alice.  Mary Ann Caine who married Hugh Wallace, appears to have had an unhappy marriage and in addition to the 5 she had with Hugh, is reported to have had an illegitimate child in Birdsville, Queensland in about 1893.  There may also have been 2 others.  She married Alfred Wright in Queensland in 1905 and died in Rockhampton Hospital, Queensland on 6th July, 1912.  Her death certificate does not mention any of her children's names unfortunately.  The informant was the Dispenser at the hospital. Her parents names were correctly identified, however.  Mary Ann Caine (nee Kewley) had been married to James Miller before she married James Caine.  Presumably James Miller died and her second marriage was on 26th Sept 1853 in Lonan, Isle of Man.  Her first marriage was on 2nd June, 1847. James Caine and Mary Ann Kewley had their first two children on the IOM, namely Mary Ann b. 1854 and William Henry b.1856.   I am interested in where Jack Dixon was born and some detail about his father, Charles John Dixon.  Does anyone have any information there please?  arranev

Hello Ann, Yes I am still interested in Agnes Helena Caine and amazed that she had another child in 1921.  She would then have been 46 years old which is getting on a bit for bearing children.  This would be her third child that I know of but I haven't been able to find her ever being married.  Would you mind telling me the source of the information of Agnes's relationship with George? Official S.A. state records have her first child having been born in 1900, with no father's name supplied.  Her second child, Jack, was not recorded at all.  Jack was born 1913c.  I have lots of information about Agnes's 9 other siblings which I can supply to you if you are interested.  They were an interesting lot who had to battle to make a living it would appear.  Kind Regards, Neville Caine

Hi Neville
We have just recently found my grandmothers birth certificate. She was born in a laying in house run by a Mrs Klaebe in Angas Street Adelaide South Australia. The birth certificate list Agnes Helena Caine as her mother and George Errington as her father. My grandmother was born Ruby Kathleen Errington and looks like she was in foster care from the first few weeks of birth. She was later adopted by a family called May.
So the source of the information is Births Deaths and Marriages in South Australia - I have a copy.
I also have a DNA link [through Ancestry] to the Caine family - Bert Fishlock - Louisa Caine.
 I am in South Australia.
There is mention on this site that Agnes was burried in Centenial Park Cemetery as Helena Dixon. Not sure if you know this - I intend to visit the grave to see if it reveals more information.
Would love any information you have on Agnes or her family.
Regards
Ann

Hi Ann,
I have not used this site very well over the years and I've just read all the previous postings.  Had I done that earlier I could have saved myself a lot of work.  However, I have a lot of information about Agnes (Alice) Helena Caine which I can send to you via this site or directly to you if you so desire.  Researchers at the Broken Hill Genealogical Society sent me information a couple of years ago which stated that the family of a Mrs Herrington were trying to find Agnes Helena Caine in 1919.  Herrington and Errington are very similar and possibly have been misheard or mis-written somewhere along the way. I will prepare some documents for you and post them on this site.
Regarding the link to Louisa Caine (one of Agnes's 6 sisters), presumably you are not also a direct descendent of her but just have a familial link, such as I would have as well.  Had someone been reaching Louise directly via Ancestor or was she a relative of someone they were researching do you know?
As previously advised, Agnes was buried in Centennial Park Cemetery under the name of Alice Helena Dixon and tenure of her grave has now been declared expired according to the cemetery's website.  I don't know what this means with regard to the grave and headstone of which I have a photograph somewhere in my records.  I live in Melbourne and I did a fair bit research in the Adelaide Public Library last year but couldn't find any marriages for Agnes.
Kind Regards,
Neville Caine

Hi Neville
I think I mentioned that my sister and I have sent our DNA to Ancestry. Its very interesting. The DNA links us as 2nd Great Grandaughters to Mary Ann Kewley. There are two other people in this circle with the same relationship to Mary Ann.
It has taken us many years to find my grandmothers birth name and this happened by chance just recently. We were then able to find the birth record for my grandmother [Ruby Kathleen Errington].
Information on George Errington is proving very difficult to find.
I have seen information which states Agnes Helena as being born in 1875 - my grandmother was born in 1902.
We have found records which show my grandmother was placed into foster care shortly after her birth - there are lots of connections with Broken Hill but we can't work out how. I have also seen the report where someone is looking for an Errington / Herrington in Broken Hill. I think this may have been my grandmother looking for information on her birth.
Yes - Rootschat is a bit difficult to navigate - again found the Caine information quite randomly.
I am in Adelaide - very happy to communicate by email - might make the exchange of information a little easier.
Ann

Hi Ann,
I'm still putting together the material for you at the moment. It should be ready in a couple of days. In your posting on 20 Feb, you say that your grandmother was born on 25 May, 1921.  Then on your posting on 25 Feb, you say that your grandmother was born in 1902. Was it perhaps your mother who was born in 1921? Regarding Jack Dixon, he was born to Agnes in 1913 as far as we know, father not known.  He and his wife Jean had no children and they both died about 20 years ago.
Kind Regards,
Neville

Please do not type your email and phone number directly into your RootsChat posts, this information is publicly viewable by anyone. The safe way to exchange details is by a PM, you do this by clicking on the little round button that appears below the profile name of the person you are wishing to contact, it is the one on the right hand side ;)
