Title: Free copies of PRs from FamilySearch ?
Post by: jillruss on Wednesday 29 January 14 11:32 GMT (UK)
A fellow Rootschatter has just informed me that Family Search do a free copying service of any entries in parish registers which are featured on their site.

https://lds.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_9tdS7lqbTCW30kR

This is news to me. Has anyone used it? Is it really free? Sorry to be so jaundiced, but I'm finding that hard to believe in this day and age.  :-\

I'd be really interested to know more.

All requests for information copied from films, book pages, CDs, marriage, death or birth certificates, wills and/or deeds, etc. will be copied in digital format and emailed to patrons in a zipped PDF or JPG file format. There is no charge for this service if we are able to email to information to patrons.

Hi Jill

I was also told about it from another rootschatter.

I requested a copy of a marriage dated 1840 last week.  I filled the form in but haven't heard back yet, so will let you know if & when I do.  If it is true it would save us all a fortune in certificates.  I'm keeping an open mind at the moment.

I think the bit most people are missing is this

Photoduplication is a service provided to FamilySearch patrons who would like copies of records or pages in books that can be found in the Family History Library, but not elsewhere.

As most of the records the LDS has are available elsewhere that would say to me that most of the images they have will not be provided free by them as they are available elsewhere. When you think about this, this makes sense as if you go to a LDS family history centre you have to pay for copies

I can see the point you're making, davidft, and I'm still very doubtful that it is a free service. However, surely all the (legitimate) records on FS have been copied from registers and therefore are available elsewhere? On that basis, what is the point of offering this service at all?  ???

I will be interested to see what response people get, I might even send in a request myself.

I do think the initial intention was only to provide copies of hard to obtain records eg in books out of print, records not generally publicly available etc

The first thing you should remember Jill is that the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pay tithes to allow the Church to host family search and film/digitise all the records they hold.

Part of this service is free access to patrons.
In the past any additional costs, such as postage would be past on to the patron requiring the service, as still happens if a patron requests a film or microfiche loan.

I believe the present free duplication service is an email service where the scans are emailed to you.

Please remember the members of the LDS Church are actually paying the costs involved.
Cheers

Even if you visit the LDS at the National Archives, where they are currently residing, you have to pay a small donation to get copies.

A fellow Rootschatter ...

That would be me!

I'm not LDS.  I have used it and know loads of others (also non-LDS) who have too.  Took a while, but got there in the end.  They emailed a zipped file containing the image I'd requested.  All FREE.

Hi,

Yes, you're the culprit! It seems I wasn't the only one who hadn't heard of this service.

I sent off my order yesterday evening and have just received an email from FS saying they get a lot of requests (I suspect they're about to get even more!) and it may take up to 10 working days. Crikey, that's a lot quicker than I expected!

That should mean yours will be arriving any day now, Carol.

Does that mean that when I do find relevant LDS records, I won't have to wait up to 4 - 5 weeks for the Microfilms to be sent from Salt Lake to my local LDS centre in Australia??  Now that would be magic!

Have been able to sort my Tann's in Leyton as they send the parish entry page and sometimes send a cropped entry of it too. My one request which included a couple of letters hasn't worked even though it was the GS number I quoted for the rest. Brilliant and free :)

You mean, 'local' as in 'nearby'?  My nearest LDS centre is in Port Hedland - 610km from here - not exactly convenient :o

Thanks to STG and Jill, I've just put in my first request for an emailed image - fingers crossed :D

I have used the service several times since I found out, so a few months before Xmas, one arrived within a couple of weeks. Have been waiting over a month this time as they changed server I think and there is quite a backlog plus more people now know about the service. Some researchers leave more notes than others too when replying and I submitted one twice and got it the second time as they couldn't find it the first time with the same reference. Still brilliant though.

It's on their website. It looks pretty comprehensive, as you'd expect from such a big organisation, and again unsurprisingly for a religious organisation they state: "We regard your personal information as confidential and do not sell it to anyone."

For non-members of the Church, this is a fantastic service, provided at the cost of Church members: their generosity is impressive.

Note they say '14 business days' which usually excludes weekends, so I'm allowing three weeks from the date of their email.  If it comes earlier, brilliant!  It's still free, as opposed to hiring the film and driving over 1200 km to view it.  Bargain!

Hi Gen

No it's a copy of the marriage certificate not a PR's entry.  Saved me £9.50 (if that's what they still are)

Hi Carol

I'm puzzled about the marriage certificate you have received, what country is it? If it is England or Wales then Familysearch.org does not have access to certificates, only to the GRO Index and various church Registers. The body of a Parish Register is identical to the GRO register, when you order a certificate from the GRO a certificate is created at that point. The body of the certificate is a scanned copy of the GRO Register. A copy of the Parish Register entry is identical to the body of a certificate without all the additional official wordings etc.

Andy
Title: Re: Free copies of PRs from Family Search?
Post by: sunflower on Friday 14 February 14 12:50 GMT (UK)
Hi Andy

The certificate is for England, for the county of Derbyshire dated Oct 16 1840 and YES it is a copy. The same information is on this copy as would be if I had ordered it from the GRO - Names, ages, occupations, father names and witnesses etc.  I never look at the additional official wordings.

The added advantage of the FS images, if they are from the original marriage register rather than just BTs, is that you see the actual signatures of the bride/groom/witnesses etc - assuming that they could write, that is!

Title: Re: Free copies of PRs from Family Search?
Post by: Blue70 on Friday 14 February 14 16:09 GMT (UK)
FS like Ancestry have the church copies of marriages so yes the original signatures should be included. They're not certificates as such (not from the government archives) but they are copies of the original church records.

In that case, if I were you I would anticipate an even longer wait.

I got that acknowledgement email on 29 Jan (citing 10 days, not 14), followed by the 'the copies are ready and will be sent in a separate email' notification on 6 Feb.

With it being a free service, I don't like to nag them so will give it a bit longer before contacting them. As I said, I suspect they are experiencing a tsunami of requests.

'the copies are ready and will be sent in a separate email' notification on 6 Feb

I had the same email ('copies are ready....') last week and the separate email with the attachment came through at the same time.

Edited to add - having read the whole topic - I've had more than a dozen records from them since I first found out about the service last August. One was wrong (Scottish census entry rather than a burial in Somerset ???) but I may have entered the wrong codes. It can take a while but worth the wait.

I have never visited an LDS centre, though have since discovered there is one quite close to me, but that hasn't stopped them sending me the records.

Can I ask on what date you actually ordered the copies you received yesterday? Also, did you really mean that you got the email saying they would be coming in a separate email and then 2 arrived the following day? if so, I think I've been forgotten! :'( I was told mine were ready and coming in a separate email as long ago as the 6th Feb.

Hi Jill,

I'm afraid I can't remember when I ordered them as I forgot to save a copy of the order or make a note of it, but they do take a few weeks.

I've been getting an acknowledgment within a few hours or a day or so, and then a few weeks later an email saying my request is ready and the document will arrive in a separate email. A few weeks ago the 2 emails (request is ready and doc attached) arrived within minutes of each other. Yesterday I had 3 emails late morning (saying they were ready) and then 2 further emails with the documents attached late evening. Not heard about the third yet. You have to open the link they send to a zipped file (and only get 14 or 21 days to open it - not at home so can't remember the details sorry).

As far as I remember, it was only one request a month from the beginning, which seems reasonable as you can ask for up to 5 records at a time, but they haven't told me off when I've asked for more within a month (usually only singles though as and when I've found entries of interest). Hope that makes sense!

Its a pity Deirdre784 can't remember the date she ordered hers - it would have given me an idea whether or not I should be worried about mine not being forthcoming.

I'm starting to think mine must have gone astray so I have emailed them again but don't hold out any great hope of a reply.

If I need copies of PR entries in future I think I'll get them through the appropriate RO and pay for them - its got to be easier!

Just to add my pinch of salt.

I applied for a photocopy record on 17th February. I got an acknowledgment a day or two later.
This evening I have received another mail which says "my request is now ready and will be forwarded in another email".
It will be interesting to see when the record actually arrives.

Jill, you will find they are very helpful  I am sure you will get a reply.

I think that this is an excellent service for free, even if it isn't the fastest one on earth.

Bev, its not the speed I'm worried about (after all, as you say, it is free) its the fact that I seem to have fallen into a black hole!  ::)

Oh well, all I can do is see what happens.

My original request was made 30th January and not acknowledged until 6 February.  I ordered five copies and got them (plus a banns copy which I hadn't ordered relating to one of my marriages) on the 24th February, so within a month even though the acknowledgment took a few days.  I have now placed another order  :)

I'll give them until Monday to at least reply to my second email querying where my copies are.

I was loathe to reorder as its just making more work for them but I suppose its the only way forward.

Now I am really confused.....

Firstly, quite by chance today I looked in my email spam file.  There I found a mail with an attachment from FamilySearch.  YIPPEE a certificate!!!! (But wait.....)
Now familysearch emails come to me without trouble into my normal inbox.  However the photocopy is from a different address, namely photoduplication[at]familysearch.  So folks I suggest you might care to check your spam boxes.  If I hadn't quite by chance looked in the spam box I would never have seen the mail and would not have my lovely, clear baptism certificate for my great-great-grandad.

However, this is not the certificate I was expecting.  Literally months ago I ordered this certificate but I never got any sort of acknowledgement.  Frankly I rather suspected I hadn't filled the form in correctly so I left it, intending to reapply another day but I never got round to it.
As mentioned previously in this thread, on 17th February I applied for two copy certs for a completely different ancestor and got a mail on 27th saying that my request would be forwarded in a separate mail.
Now I am wondering if the mail of 27th Feb actually applies to the request of last year!!!

Still, I am delighted with my copy certificate and will be waiting to see what else now happens.

But I repeat, check your spam mail as you may find like me that you have a surprise waiting.  :)

Well, I've sent off another email and if that follows the same pattern and is ignored, I shall give up. Its really not worth the hassle.

original request: 28 Jan
acknowledgement: 29 Jan
email from them saying my copies were ready and would be sent in a searate email: 6 Feb.
my first query email: 23 Feb (no reply)
my second query email: 27 Feb (no reply)
my third and last query email: 4 March

I have heard absolutely nothing from them. Nothing in my junk mailbox either.

So....Me....white flag....waving!!!

I'm assuming you mean my 'Junk Email' box? yes - I always check that.

My request must have fallen into a black hole at the 'its done' stage. If I don't get a reply to my latest email to them (today) I shall give it up as a bad job. I don't really see the point in starting the request all over again and going through the same rigmarole.

I do think its bad of them not to reply to either of my emails, free service or not. (Can you tell I'm not amused?  >:( )

Hi Jill, yes your junk e-mail folder sorry.

It's a shame it happened on your first order. I've had more than 20 images from them now which I would not have had otherwise as I don't live anywhere near the parishes involved (and therefore the records offices).

Why not ask again, or for something different just to see what happens. I've not tried to e-mail them to see if I'd get a response, and it may just be that they have been inundated with requests (and e-mails with 'lost' queries), and cannot handle the volume.

Yay!  Email arrived yesterday from Photoduplication.  (It then took me two hours to work out how to open it, but that's not their fault.)  I'd asked for one baptism and they sent the whole page, which was great because the writing was hard to decipher.  Well worth waiting for ;D

This email sent to me yesterday by support@familysearch.org may be of interest to others planning to use this service:

If you will go to: wiki.familysearch.org, type in “photoduplication services” and click on the purple/blue Photoduplication Services wording near the top of the page, it will take you to the wiki page that has complete directions and the fillable form for submitting a request. The link for the form is the bright green box that says; Photoduplication request form online. Click on it and complete the form which will automatically email directly to us.

THE NEW FORM IS ON WIKI AND ALL REQUESTS MUST BE COMPLETED on the form. Due to a heavy load of requests, cases not submitted on the new form will not be processed and will need to be resubmitted on the form.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

I received the above email from support@familysearch.org after requesting  a photo duplication of my great grandparents marriage certificate. I had requested the photo copy using the link given at the beginning of this forum, providing all the information found in the search for my great grandparents' marriage on familysearch.org. Apparently the marriage in Lismore ARgyllshire is not on the film number given although it should be according to the catalogue.   I was told to go to the address at wiki and resubmit the request. If I have no further information, how will this help? Frustrated.....
If anyone has a suggestion, please pass it on,

I am looking for the marriage certificate for John Clerk and Catherine Mcdonald (Macdonald)which took place in Lismore  Argyllshire on 24 January 1836. On familysearch.org it is M 11525-2, film # 1041072. As I mentioned above the information should be on this film according to their catalogue but isn't apparently.
Thanks, Nan

The catalogue shows this it might be worth trying the other film number

Marriages, v. 1, 1833-1854, 1870-1876. (Duror) (Preferred film for viewing. Use this before ordering the other filming.)   Family History Library   British Film   1041072 Item 5

Marriages, v. 2, 1821-1854. (Lismore and Appin) (Preferred film for viewing. Use this before ordering the other filming.)   Family History Library   British Film   1041073 Items 1 - 2

I expect OH will get one rejected as it would not accept the film number so we put it against the next question just in case  ::)

Hi Everyone,

I am in NSW, Australia.  On Sunday 9 March 2014 I lodged a request for some (English) PRs .  I have just now received the following reply.  4 - 6 weeks wait, for PRs from the late 1700s and early 1800s .... that's well worth waiting for, even if there had been  £ £ fee but these are FREE of charge.   :)  :)  So I am hoping to receive the images I requested in time for me to spend Easter Monday (21 April a public holiday in NSW) scrutinising the images.

I will let you all know the date that this order is actually delivered.

What a wonder, and without charge.

HELP!

So, at last, I've finally received something from FS. The trouble is I don't know what because the attachments won't open! Or, should I say, they open but only to a blank screen! I can't tell you how frustrated I am with this whole exercise! I wish I hadn't started...

Does anyone have any ideas as to why the attachments won't open?

The only thing I think it could be is, at the foot of the page it says 'Restricted sites. Protected mode on'. When I hover the cursor over it, it says 'double click to change security settings' which I did. However, it doesn't make a scrap of difference! I am on Vista Premium.

Can anyone help me finally view what I've been waiting for all this time - before I need one of those cardigans with the long sleeves that tie at the back!!!!!!!! ???

I had problems with my images. I changed my internet options security settings and that resolved the attachment download problem. Then there was a problem with my directory that affected my use of the files. I ran a repair and restarted PC and everything was fine. I spent hours on this until I figured out the problems.

Thanks. My friend told me to send them to her, she got them opened and sent them back to me in a form I could open them in!

I have no idea how she did it (obviously much better than me at all things computer based) but at least I've got into them now - and it was my original request placed way back on Feb 6.

They weren't much use though - a couple of them not even copies of originals but copies of transcriptions! I don't think I shall be bothering again!  ::)

Zip files - click to download the attachment in your email, (on my laptop these go into Downloads) then right click and click on 'Extract all'.  A Browse box will appear and you can click on that and decide where you want them to go.

Just requested 3 printouts from Cornwall

When I check on the normal Familysearch site for one of the films, to check the item number etc, the names I am looking for do not show up. I got this information a little while ago, and would expect the film number to remain the same. Has anyone else run into this problem?

Can you see the record you want on the normal familysearch site.
When I have ordered it has mostly only shown the names / place name (not church name) and a film number on familysearch and this is all I have submitted ignoring the rest of the boxes and I have got the copies I wanted.  I have not gone hunting for the item / page number.

Just run into an interesting problem.

Looking for a marriage in Cornwall. Found the information on England Marriages 1538 - 1973

Then comes the problem  ??? There are six (6) films stated. When I checked each record, four have no record to be found, and the other two do not appear to have the appropriate information, ie the marriage.  Where do I go from here :'( :'(

It is useful to check FamilySearch's Catalog to make sure that you're ordering the right records.

I have just received an 1822 marriage from Duffield, Derbyshire, which I ordered using the film number from their England Marriages, 1538–1973.  I was thrilled when the zip arrived, but then disappointed to discover that the page was from the Bishop's Transcripts — I had really wanted to see my ancestors' original signatures to compare with other handwriting.

Battling through the FS Catalog, I've found the "proper" Parish Records and have ordered again with a different film/fiche number.

Just a general question - re: the permitted 5 per month - do you use the date of your request and then order more a month on from then, or from the date of receipt of the images?  My request for 3 images was on 28 Feb, copies received 20 March.  Think I might try again for another batch in a few days time.

Rosie, the marriage I am interested in is between Thomas Stephens and Anne Matthews. It took place on 8 July 1759 according to Phillimores, at Madron, Cornwall
Familysearch also shows it, same place, same time, but has the film numbers as:
0962269 IT 1, 236552, 254189, 254192, 254193, 254194, 90257
I get : No record for: 0962269 IT 1, 254189, 254192, 254193

For 236552, I get Births and christening records for Madron, but no marriages.
For: 90257, I get Births and christening records for Maker, and a few for Madron, but again, no marriages.

I am a little confused as to the correct film number, or have they managed to put the incorrect information in the record for the marriage.

For A Chesters....

Hello.... :)

I can't help re film numbers etc but if you are not aware it is possible to browse the Madron parish registers.

The banns for the marriage you want do appear amongst those =

Banns - Madron, Penzance = Thomas Stephens & Ann Matthews Marriage July 1759
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-12877-94443-27?cc=1769414&wc=M6NN-3ZW:138123201,140336001,140373901

To browse the images =
https://familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https://familysearch.org/recapi/sord/collection/1769414/waypoints

Madron =  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0yse/

It is a bit of a long trawl and I don't have time to check them all.... but for instance re the date for the ones which state 1577 to 1812, which you would think would have the marriage you want:

Although it doesn't seem to have any marriages  ::)

Penzance Madron - Baptisms, Marriages, Burials, 1577-1812

The baptism images go to img 68 - July 1726
burials start image 69 - May 1577 to image 114 - July 1690
burials image 115 - Jan 1811 to image 119 - Dec 1812

I don't know if it is going to help, but at least you can have a copy of the Banns  :D

Thank you both Rosie and Sheila for that information.

Sheila, what you have shown is that it is Penzance Madron which I need to check. I was simply looking for Madron, which is probably why I was getting nowhere.

I will, as you say, do some trawling, as there are a couple more records in the Madron area to look for, but with your links, I should have a better chance of finding them.

Once again, many thanks to Sheila and Rosie

Not sure what you mean AC.  :-\

Familysearch has extracted records which have never included all the records from all of the films that they hold. Sometimes films were extracted in part, there are occasions when it was only female or male baptisms extracted from a parish and not both.

The site also has member submissions which were always to be double checked for accuracy.

Rosie, I have a marriage of Henry Huthnance and Jane veal(e) 5 Feb 1799 at Gwithian Cornwall

I have a copy of Phillimores Cornwall Parish Registers, Gwithian Marriages, Page 134 and also a transcription from the Cornwall OPC records.

When I try Family Search, I get four mentions of Henry, but as the father of the bride!
For Jane I get "No records found for >Name: jane veal, Event: Marriage, Place: cornwall, Event Range: 1795-1805"

Also, when i look at the images for Cornwall, there is no mention of Gwithian at all.

It is most frustrating.

Just being working on more of my Cornwall ancestors, and found that several of them have mention in Phillimores, but not on Family Search.

I would have thought that if Phillimore could find the records, LDS could also, or I am thinking wrong there.

Any ideas anyone?

AC

Hi

My understanding is that the images provided by Familysearch.org are from films they hold. They do not have films for every Parish for a variety of reasons, in some cases the Registers are still held by the Church, in other cases the LDS were refused permission to film. I also suspect that you need to find the particular event on the Familysearch.org website so you can provide them precise details. In some cases, as Rosie said, only male or female baptisms have actually been indexed although the film would show all baptisms.

Just because a record is on Phillimores it doesn't mean the LDS would have a film.

Andy

Am  a bit stuck, have worked out the errors I have made when ordering but what do you do when you want a birth in Orange Essex and it'd headed as

William F. Tann in entry for Thomas George Tann, Great Britain, Births and Baptisms, 1571-1977
Name:    Thomas George Tann
Gender:    Male
Christening Date:    10 May 1868
Christening Place:    IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHAPEL-CATHOLIC, SOUTH ORANGE, ESSEX,
Birth Date:    23 Apr 1868
Father's Name:    William F. Tann
Mother's Name:    Mary Haitnelt
Indexing Project (Batch) Number:    C53131-1
System Origin:    Great Britain-EASy and VR
GS Film number:    1378019
Reference ID:    - 2:1WDPW39

and they send the request back because it's not under the New Jersey heading when they catagorized it Great Britain, Births and Baptisms, 1571-1977 in the first place

I suspect that Family Search have got it wrong somewhere.  I stand to be corrected, but I am not aware of any place in Essex (England) with the name of South Orange.  However, there is a South Orange in Essex County, New Jersey - according to Google Maps.  And a Chapel of the Immaculate Conception in South Orange, Essex County, New Jersey.

I would try ordering with just the following details

Film number 1378019
Thomas George Tann
Christening date 10 May 1868
Catholic Church. Immaculate Conception Chapel (South Orange, New Jersey);

The film number in the library catalogue confirms that this chapel is on the film quoted

Church records, 1860-1876 [South Orange, New Jersey]

Wow.

After my recent success with a baptism record I applied for a copy of another certificate.
On 26th March I was informed that due to the high demand for the service, there would be a delay of 4 to 6 weeks.
This afternoon my cert is in my inbox!  ;D
Very happy and impressed.

Sorry this is a strange one.  May I suggest that you contact familysearch they are apparently very good at answering queries.  There is a help on the top right of this page https://familysearch.org/search

You can then either live chat (I suspect they may be in the US) or send a message.

I am very impressed with this service offered by FamilySearch. Just yesterday I received 3 records from the 1700's which I had ordered in late March. Never dreamed when I started my family tree that I would see copies of records from so long ago. AND without any fees. Unfortunately not all members of my family came from the same area of Scotland. So far my best luck has been with records from the parishes in Ayrshire and Renfrewshire. Argyllshire seems to be a bust so far.
Thank you FamilySearch for offering such a wonderful service

....We find that you will need to enter the call number from the entry you found on FamilySearch, 942 B4C v6 in the call number box. Then just enter the information about Mary. Your request should go through. You will not need to enter the batch number...

just about to try again

I put my 5 in two Sundays ago and got a reply today but there is only one image and it isn't one I requested. To add to this the attachment with a copy of the ones I did request has my email address on it and the 5 I asked for but it also has somebody else's email address and their phone number !

There is a live chat link somewhere isn't there as I don't know if this means I will be seeing mine now or not.

Update - Spoke to Familysearch on live chat and after being transferred a few times they have opened a case, not sure what this means but if nothing happens before start of May I'll order them again.

When I find the person concerned, there are a couple of films recorded  :o

How do I work out which one to request, or do I request as per the information shown. One is for a Susannah Robinson with films 0091083, 0091084. I have some others like this, so which do I request. Any help would be gratefully accepted.

If you check the library catalogue with the film number it looks as though both of these films are transcripts and not copies of the register   :-\

https://familysearch.org/catalog-search

Parish register transcripts, 1567-1924
Author:   Church of England. St. Michael's Church (Bishop-Wearmouth, Durham);
Wood, Herbert Maxwell; Corder, James W.

If they had not been transcripts I would just have selected one film number that related to the parish register or bishops transcript and ignored the other number.  I have done this where the system would not accept the multiple numbers given.

Hi Ministeph

You will not be able to request a copy of a birth certificate from familysearch because they do not have copies of these.  If the person was baptised, they may have a copy of their baptism but it will not include (or is very unlikely to include) the mother's maiden name.  You would need to search for this on familysearch.org.

Unfortunately, if you want to obtain a copy of the birth certificate you will need to order it from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ at the cost of £9.25.  You can order online from France.

The references can be found by searching here - http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Hope this helps.

You cannot get a Birth certificate from the familysearch website.

You can get the references for a UK birth certificate from this website,
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

and you can order a UK birth certificate from this site.

Thank you very much for your kind replies zx123 & smudwhisk !  :)

What kind of acts do you ask for then ? And what extra information do you obtain this way compared to what is already on the site ? I mean on a copy of the baptism would I learn anything more than what is written on the site (DOB, Date of batptism, name of parents) ? For instance would I know who the godfather and godmother are ??

You can get the address of the family and occupation of the father from original images of baptisms. For marriage records you can get addresses, occupations, witnesses' names and signatures of bride and groom. Burial records can sometimes be useful if there's an address on the original but not on the transcript.

I think it depends on the dates of the marriages or baptisms, there seems to be less information if the dates are before civil registration.

For the ones I sent for I didn't find out much extra from what i already knew, except for a Scottish marriage which gave the birth places in Ireland of the couple.  I also noticed a couple of transcription errors.  The marriage date had been given on the transcription as the 31st March, however it turned out that this was the first proclamation date along with 7th and 14th of April.  On another the places the couple were from were the wrong way around on the transcription.

I think they are worth sending for to check information.

This is just my experience, from what I've read on rootschat the information found in early records depends on the minister and some people hit lucky with a record with a good bit of info.

I agree with purplekat, it is very good for double-checking on information you've already got.  I've sent off for several over the past few months, but only one baptism told me anything new.  Now one of the conundrums on my father's side has been un-conundrummed!   ;D ;D

So thank you to those of you on Rootschat who first informed us of this service.

I wouldn't mind but they have closed three FHC's near to me one of which is 3 miles away and the other two approx 25 miles away. Public transport would be a nightmare.  I wonder where they will relocate the London one, it was only supposed to be at Kew until early 2013.

The quick returns on the Aussie records at the moment, .... errr .... Not too many RChatters on the Aussie Board know about it at present...

I will start a thread to let them know about the new form  :)

And put a link back to this one.

The 50 mile rule won't really work in Australia, so fingers crossed the delays of 4 to 6 weeks don't creep out further.

The record concerned is not available from Family Search as it is not a parish record. The record will need to be obtained from the Irish GRO.

I ordered using the new form yesterday. I kept by the one order per month guidelines so I may have slipped up by doing the decent thing if my requests are knocked back because of the new rules about your location. I've had an acknowledgement by e-mail but that doesn't mean they will fulfil the requests I may get a refusal from them at some point. The changes are obviously a result of the increased demand for the service. A better way of running the service would have been to limit everyone to one record per month instead of a maximum of five.

Hi

No, you can't get a copy of an English death certificate from Familysearch. Only the General Register Office (GRO) or the relevant Local Register Office can issue a death certificate.

The new rules have been put in place because people have been taking advantage of the system and demanded multiple records when it would be easy for them to visit a family history center and view the records themselves.
