The war memorial in Johnshaven has an inscription on it for EDWIN S NOBLE - could any one out there provide any information on this person? A work is being compiled on all the names on the memorial but this chap seems to be illusive! Does anyone has access to military records for a possible match ?

The name is quite common particularly in the North of England without the S and there were a good number involved in WW1. I checked on Scotland’s People and could not find any birth’s before 1900.
The only two I can find are noted below and relate to WW1 medal cards, so not much information.
Edwin S Noble East Yorkshire Regiment number 12/750
E S Noble L Strath's H, Imperial Army number 2625
However maybe you are referring to WW2?

Hi All
I searched www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and could only find 1 birth in Scotland from 1855 for Edwin Noble and that was in 1909.
Likewise deaths only 1 in Scotland and this was 1918 age range on this death does not tie in with the birth above.
None of the above ties in with Kincardine

The 1918 death that BruceL has found was St Ola , Orkney , birth year 1883.

The memorial was erected in 1923, so he is being commemorated for WW1. The problem we're having is linking him to the parish of Benholm and why he was included on the memorial. Here's the information that Chris has sent me.

e) Canada War Graves Register 1914 - 1918
f) US Burial Registers, Military Posts & National Cemeteries 1862 - 1960
g) US Navy Casualities 1776 - 1941
h) All Canada CEF Commonwealth War Graves Register 1914 - 1919
i) Irish Casualities WW1
j) A&J Robertson (Granite) Ltd. They took over the company who erected the memorial.
k) Aberdeenshire Archives
l) Ancestry.co - British Casualties WW1
m) Find-My-Past, Scotlands People, etc. for deaths, marriages, etc.
n) National Archives where I found a few Edwin Nobles but all were with English Regiments (which does not in itself rule them out) but I could not find a connection back to the Parish
I have found two people with the right name, one died of influenza on Orkney is 1918, he was a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery but he came from Blaby in Leicestershire, so did his wife (Rachel Ellen Coxall) so I don't think there is a link there. The other one was in the Yorkshire Regiment and I have emailed the regimental museum for information and I'm waiting for a reply.
Regarding the memorial I believe it was erected in 1923. A guy in the village is the great-grandson of the man who collected the names to go on the memorial, however, I am told that he liked a good drink and I am wondering if someone played a practical joke on him or he was so sozzled that he got the name confused."
So that's where we are at the moment. if anyone has any further thoughts - please get in touch.

I think this was the one I mentioned earlier Edwin S Noble East Yorkshire Regiment number 12/750
I did a further check and found he was Edwin Staveley Noble, born 1895, married 1923, died 1983.
The other one I found E S Noble L Strath's H, Imperial Army number 2625, there is a note on the maedal card which states his medals were updated in 1934, so I guess he survived.

Thanks Colin, looks like they're not him either.
Just done a search on the British Newspaper Archive for a mention of Johnshaven between 1914 & 1923, despite lots of the war dead being mentioned I can't see any mention of our man. There's a couple where the name does not come up in a search, so still possible.
