Title: Barley in Hertfordshire - Memories and Images
Post by: Barley History Recorder on Thursday 30 January 14 15:10 GMT (UK)
Hi - I'm looking for any memoires, photos, postcards and recollections of Barley in Hertfordshire.
In particular any photos of people or locations in the village including old pictures of Barley folk at work, playing sports, about their day to day business or in military uniforms.  War records would be of great interest as well.
I have a fairly extensive collection of postcards by Frith, Clark and Bishop but I suspect there are still many gaps.  Does anyone know any of the history of J Bishop the photographer circa 1900.  I gather that for a while he lived in a caravan at the Chequers in Barley and would move from village to village in the Royston area to make and sell his photographic collections.
A number of famous artists have painted in the village over the last 400 years (Richard Evans, E Boye Uden, Alex Ansted, Merula Salaman, Ernest Whydale, Spencer Gore, F.W. Baldwin, Eric Edwards, John Curtis).  Does anyone have any copies of their works we can add to the collection or anything by other artists.

Anything to do with Barley will be of interest

Hello

You have posted this on Herefordshire board instead of Hertfordshire. I suggest you ask a Moderator to move it for you.

However did you get a picture of Church Street without it being full of parked cars?!

Must have been when the village shop was shut, school out for the hols, no service at St Margaret of Antioch, no event in the Town House and all the coaches out for the day.

What sources have you tried already for old photos / memories?  I presume you have looked at Barley Village website for possible contacts.

Thanks.  I did repost in the correct county and further to my request for a pic of the Fox and Hounds just after the 1950 fire I now have that picture.

I'm currently putting a book together about the village and have already gone past 400 pages of 12 point text along with many photos and paintings.  However I'm always open to find something new so if anyone has a link to a Barley item I would be pleased to check it out.

How's the book on Barley going?

Is it intended to be a sequel to Jack Wilkerson's book. Have you come across an Ellis Wilkerson?

You mention Merula Salaman in your first post, presumably related to Dr Salaman who donated a trophy to Barley Horticultural Society for best potato exhibit in the annual flower and produce show.

Hi Lizzie

The domain "CHP.UK.net" is no longer functioning and has been de-registered/cancelled.

May be worth a mail to "Ask Chris" [ Hertfordshire-Genealogy.co.uk ] to see if Chris knows anything.

Don't try the Fox and Hounds, it's been closed for over a year. The owner is trying to convert it to two dwellings.

There's quite a good local history of Barley:

Two Ears of Barley
Chronicle of an English Village
By Jack Wilkerson

Hi,
I was evacuated to Barley Village during the war with my family.  I wrote a piece on this experience, from the viewpoint of an evacuee and sent it to someone who records these things.  Was that you?  I still have the piece, so if you wish to read it please contact me via Roots.  Two of my siblings were fostered with Dr Redcliffe Nathan Salaman who created the blight-less potato...interesting stuff!

Not me. But it might have been Chris who started this thread, but hasn't been back to the board recently.
