Title: Struggling to find birth/parents of Arthur Bezant
Post by: sw1 on Friday 31 January 14 20:53 GMT (UK)
Doing some research for someone else.
Arthur BEZANT. Censuses 1871-1911 say born Nottingham/Nottinghamshire abt 1843 but I cannot find it anywhere! Nor can I find him in 1851 or 1861. I've tried FreeBMD, LDS etc

He married twice:
First to Sarah BRADBURY in Birmingham in 1874 and second to Sarah Annie PROBERT in 1908.
Possible death for Arthur - Dec 1918 King's Norton.

Can anyone help me establish a birth for Arthur and his parents
Regards Suzie (from Orkney)

What names appear as witnesses and parent at each marriage? Who is he with at each census?

Pauline,
This is what I have for the censuses.
1871 Census. Aston Road, Aston, Warwicks. Lewis Owen 36, Sarah H 31, Samuel Edward 3, Ada Florence 9, Marcile (?) 8, Eliza W 6 months; also in household Emma Wryhl (?) 19 and Arthur Bezant, boarder, 26.  RG10/3156/142/11
Interestingly Arthur is boarder with Lewis Owen and Sarah. Lewis dies in 1872 and Arthur marries Sarah in 1874.

Marriage. 1874. Arthur Bezant married Sarah Bradbury. Ref: 1874/2 Birmingham 6d/300

1881 Census. The Coldfield, Sutton Coldfield. Arthur 38, Sarah 41, Edward Owen 13, Annie Bezant 6, Lucy 5, Flory 3. Also Hannah Ward 29 and Herbert Burgoyne 28, both servants. RG11/3050/50/29. Arthur is licensed victualler.
NB: Census states Edward is son-in-law. He is in fact stepson, son of Sarah's first marriage.

1891 Census. Hare & Hounds Inn, Minworth, Sutton Coldfield. Arthur 48, Sarah 50, Annie 16, Lucy 14, Florence 13, Arthur 9. Also Emma Smith 16 servant, and Samuel Hill 24 and James Smith 34, boarders.  RG12/2439/87/1

1901 Census. Hare & Hounds Inn, Minworth. Arthur 59, Sarah 60, Arthur 29 plus Amy Elkington 22, house servant.  RG13/2893

1911 He is with second wife Sarah Ann. They had been married 2 years.

Possible death Dec 1918.

I have no certificates; I have yet to ask if they want me to purchase them. Thought I'd see if anyone else is researching this lot first.

I haven't got time to do anything more tonight but it's possible he was born Arthur Tuckwood.

Reason being in 1871 he's 26 and a gun maker, so I looked at 1861 for an Arthur age 16 born Notts living Aston and an apprentice gun maker called Arthur Tuckwood comes up. He is living with Frederick and Sarah Bryant.

He only shows up on one other census 1851 living with mother Sarah and her parents in Nottingham.

Hello Suzie....

Sorry I see others are on the trail while I have been typing.... will post anyway  :D

There isn't an Arthur Bezant on the Nottinghamshire FHS indexes and as you say apparently not on BMD indexes.

This is my theory, bear with me as it gets complicated and you will need to follow the census etc.

As on the 1871 Arthur gives his occupation as Gunmaker - I think the key is this link.....
http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=145842&page=1.

1841 = Piece 1015 Book/Folio 4 / Page  1 =   Address Thoroughfare, Halesworth ,Suffolk

Elizabeth Doughty - wife aged 64 - born Leicestershire.
Eliza - dau - aged 34 -  born Loughbro, Leicestershire
Ann dau aged 32 - born Loughbro, Leicestershire
SARAH TUCKWOOD, daughter, Widow, aged 30 - born Loughbro, Leicestershire
ARTHUR TUCKWOOD, grandson - aged 7 - Scholar - born Nottingham
~ ~ ~

(I think he is Frederick Simon Bezant)
1861 = Piece 2184 Folio 54 Page  23   - Potters Hill, Aston, Warwickshire
BEZANT, Frederick S - Head - 41   - Gun Maker And Draper Assistant Employing 1 Man - born Ringsfield, Suffolk
BEZANT, Sarah   Wife   Married- aged 40 - born Loughton, Leicestershire (Loughboro' ?)
TUCKWOOD, Arthur - Apprentice - Unmarried - aged 16   (born abt 1845)   Gun Maker - born Nottingham
~ ~ ~

There is a Marriage SeptQ 1843 for John Tuckwood and on the same page is Sarah Doughty - but this marriage isn't on the Notts FHS marriage index, nor is there a baptism for Arthur Tuckwood.

Births Sep 1843

If Sarah Tuckwood did marry Frederick Simon Bezant I can't see a marriage for them?

I hope it gives you something to go on.

Frederick Bezant and Sarah Tuckwood won't have married before 1861, as Mrs Bezant is still alive, in Nottingham with her son William Rout and his wife (William turns out also to use the surname Bezant). Ref RG 9, 2467, 57, 14

Good sleuthing -but if you look at image of 1861 census Arthur Tuckwood is with Frederick S Bezant and what looks like Arthur's mother

Possibly Frederick was Arthur's father - I'll post some census -as there seems to be some very strange relationships!!!!!

Oh my goodness, what a wonderful response from EVERYONE on here to my query. Thank you all so much. Every time I have asked a question on this forum, (and that's not very often) it has come up trumps for me. Thank you.

It will take me a bit of time to carefully go through what everyone has said and sent; it does look a complicated family which, in a way, means it wasn't just me being silly and missing something simple.

Many thanks.
Kind regards
Suzie

if you look at the divorce papers both Harriet and William are "Rout or Bezant"  William taking the name of his stepfather, presumably

Hello...  :)

A bit more, I looked for a burial for Arthur's father but there isn't one on the FHS burial index.

But I think this death is likely to be his.

Deaths Sep 1850
TUCKWOOD  John - Nottingham  15 366

Nottinghamshire Guardian - Thursday 1st August 1850
Sudden Death in Nottingham - On Tuesday, and by adjournment on Wednesday, an inquest was held before Mr. Coroner Browne, on the body of JOHN TUCKWOOD, aged 35, butcher.
On Sunday night the deceased was on Parliament Street in a state of intoxication. A number of lads were teasing him, and he kicked at one of them, upon which they knocked him down. He then staggered to a friend's  house in Trumpet Street, and asked him to find him a night's lodging. He took him to a house of a man named Shelton, where he was put to bed.
He was immediately taken very ill, and Mr Maltby, surgeon at the Dispensary, was sent for. He found him suffering from an epileptic fit and applied the usual remedies, but the man died on Tuesday morning. A post mortem examination was made by Mr Maltby, who stated that there were no internal marks of violence.
Verdict: Died from effusion of water on the brain.

Well, thank you. I have just found a death on FreeBMD that fits with that.
John Tuckwood. 1850/3 Nottingham 15/366.
Great to have that snippet from the newspaper. That's what I call flesh on the bones!
Many thanks.

Hallo everyone who has helped in this.
Just thought I'd tell you I have spent most of the day looking for a marriage of Frederick Simon Bezant to Sarah Tuckwood nee Doughty. And I too give up!

I found a possible death for a Frederick Simon Bezant. 1881 Suffolk aged 60 which gives a birth year of 1821 which fits with a birth of abt 1820 Ringsfield, Suffolk.

Also discovered Mary Elizabeth ROUT, his first wife, died 1879 Nottingham.

Sarah Doughty, who married John Tuckwood, was born to Thomas Doughty and Elizabeth Brewin; he was b 1783 Sutton Bonnington and Eliz born Loughborough.

John Tuckwood popped up in 1841 as a butcher in Nottingham in the household of Charles Holmes.

I'm just about done in now! But what wonderful stuff you all sent me. I am SO grateful.
Kind regards
Suzie
