Post by: heatherwalsh on Sunday 02 February 14 03:14 GMT (UK)
Hello everyone.  Hoping for some help please. Looking for the parents of Violet Thelma Elston.  born abt 1911.   only trace I have found of her under her maiden name Elston , is in Colac electoral roll in 1931.  Her death under her married name of Ross, says her mothers name was Rose.  This is all I have.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.
kind regards from Heather

Violet Thelma ELSTON married Geo ROSS in 1933.
Ref = 1742

So far I can't see a birth for her in Victoria.

Do you have first names for the parents or only mothers' maiden surname?

Heather, does her death information give her mother's surname as Rose or her given name?

I've found the death of a Rose ELSTON aged 72 at Kew in 1957.
I'll investigate further.

Rose ELSTON is on the Corangamite Electoral Roll in 1919!
Address given as Apollo Bay, occupation home duties.
The same address has Hannah ELSTON listed.

The death index gives Rose's mother as Hannah ANDREWS and her father as Arthur Henry ELSTON.
Hannah died in COLAC in 1930 and Arthur Henry died there in 1922.

I'm really wondering.....

The only online tree on Ancestry has Violet's birth as May 1910, and her mother as Rose ELSTON.
There's a photo of her on there.

Using 1910 and just the given name of Violet, or Thelma, nothing is appearing for her birth in the indexes.

Maybe you need to get the marriage certificate of Violet Thelma ELSTON and George ROSS, Heather.....that should name her parents, provided she gave the information.

The Arthur Henry ELSTON who died in 1922 was the husband of Elizabeth Harriet....
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/1833042

So....was there another Arthur Henry ELSTON in Colac or ???

In 1919  Hannah Elston and Rose are at Appollo Bay on the ERs. No sign of an Arthur Henry there.    :-\

I wonder if the third given name is important ...A H E ELSTON...in differentiating between two Arthur Henry ELSTONs?

The will for Arthur Henry ELSTON d. 4 Jun 1922 has widow Elizabeth, son Henry Laurence, Colac,  daughter Phoebe Helen SMITH, Gellibrand

There is an obit in The Colac Herald  25 April 1917 for Arthur Henry KIA WW1 which I am not able to see completely.......

Good find, Muss!   :)

In 1924 there's a Charles Edward ELSTON listed at Appollo Bay, as are Hannah and Rose.

But I can't find any marriage for Hannah and AH in Victoria.

I don't blame you, Heather.....it's very confusing, so I think a certificate or two maybe in order. If only we could find Violet Thelma's birth!

After much searching, I have found a birth for a Rose around 1885 ....actually in 1884 in Milparinka, NSW, listed as Rose ANDREWS, with mother Hannah ANDREWS......just to throw a little more confusion into the saga! I haven't checked it on the NSW index yet, but no father is given, and ref number is 33128.

Marriage record for Arthur Henry ELSTON who married Elizabeth Harriet HALES in 1880 has that he was born in Northamptonshire.
FreeBMD has an Arthur Henry ELSTON registered Sep Qtr 1853 Northampton 3b/69 or 3b/89.

The marriage record for Arthur Henry ELSTON who married Hannah ANDREWS in 1890 says he was born in Islington, England.
There's a baptism record for Arthur Henry ELSTON in Islington with his birth recorded as 30th October 1856. Father  = George Henry ELSTON, watch maker; mother = Adelaide JOHNSON.
FreeBDM has the birth registered Dec Qtr 1856, St Lukes, 1b/513

There definitely appear to be 2 Arthur Henry ELSTONs.

I have an Inquests Index, Heather.
However, to see the actual inquest, you would have to go to the Public Records Office -Archives of Victoria. You can't get a copy any other way, I'm afraid.

Hello debeades.
Welcome to RootsChat.    :)

I think the answer to your question would be that it could have been anywhere!

I've searched all the available online indexes plus what I have on disk, and nothing turns up, not even when I searched South Australian records and Victorian records just using her given names, together and separately.
I don't have access to Tasmanian records, but I know a couple of others on the board do.

I don't know if anyone else has any suggestions.

I would suggest Melbourne would be much closer to Colac?  Lots of unwed mothers went to Carlton Women's Hospital.

Hi Heather, Violet Thelma Elston was my grandmother. My cousin contacted me regarding this post. I don't think she had a birth certificate, my sister and I tried for years to find one but didn't.
Violet was born in 1910, not sure about her birthday as she died when I was 16.
May I ask why you are searching for her? Are you a long lost relative.
Regards
Sue

Hi Gina,
I'm searching for a friend who is the son of Violet. He was born in 1929 when Violet was 19 years old and has no record of his father (blank on the birth certificate). I assume this was before she married George....? He has never had any contact with any of his family. He has not found a birth record for his mother (which he was lead to believe was in SA), but a google search lead me here.
Can you tell me which children Violet had?

Hi Kelly,
I would love some more information about your friend who thinks that Violet is his mother. Violet was my nana too (Gina’s cousin) and her life has always been a bit of a mystery to us. I was only small when she died but she wouldn’t talk about her life or family to my mum. Violet had four children after she was married to George, one of them was my mum.
Anything you can share would help.
