Post by: gaithers on Thursday 06 February 14 14:17 GMT (UK)
Hello! I am looking for any information anyone can give me on Joseph Parke born 1886 in county Leitrim and died in 1933 in Toronto, also his wife Augusta Hewitt Parke , born in county Armagh 1892 and died in Toronto 1972. Is Parke a common name in county Leitrim? There is a Parke castle in county Leitrim...any connection?

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Does his marriage or death certificate list parents or at least his father? Do you know what religion he was? his occupation? It's usually best, and necessary to get all possible details from Canadian records before looking for Irish records.

One possibility here in 1901- www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cavan/Belturbet/Butler_s_Street/1061848

William Hewitt did not 'leave his estate' to William James Rountree & Wilson Stanley- they were likely executors of the estate, applied for and were granted probate to sort out his estate.
"Hewitt William of Mulladry county Armagh farmer died 28 December 1925 Probate Belfast 26 October to Wilson Stanley and William James Rountree farmers. Effects £63."
PRONI, Belfast will have the paperwork, including Will, in their archives.

My husband is descended from Elizabeth Ann Parke of Ballinamore.  She is most likely related to your Joseph Parke.  Eliza's parents were William Parke and Elizabeth Taylor Parke of Ballinamore.  My question is:  how are they related?  Eliza married Robert Charles Colhoun on 8 Feb 1872 and they moved immediately to Canada...Fenelon Falls, Ontario.

What, if anything, do you know about the Parkes?

Hi there,

If you're related to Agusta Hewitt, then we are distant relatives. My grandad was William Brooke Hewitt, who was the son of James Hewitt (Agusta Hewitt's brother). I don't have much more information that you already have. Agusta and James had a brother who died when he was 2, that's pretty much all I know.

If you find anything more, please let me know!

I live in Ireland and have lots of information on the Parke Family. My Grandmother, Margaret Emily Parke, was a sister of Joseph Parke (born 18th Apr 1885 died 28th Oct 1933 ) who married Augusta Hewitt from Portadown, County Armagh (born 2nd Dec 1892 died 13th Dec 1972). Joseph was born in Drumlonan, Ballinamore, County Leitrim, Ireland. Margaret Emily married my Grandfather John Ryan from Cavan. There are still Parke ancestors living in Ontario and Michigan. I have spoken to Keith Parke (grandson of Joseph's brother Malcolm) and Maureen Savage (granddaughter of his sister Alice). I would love to hear more from you. I have enclosed a copy of the marriage certificate. I am the Kevin Ryan on the pdf file attached.

Thanks for replying, that's really interesting. I had a notion (can't find the document) that Augusta came back to Northern Ireland and died there. Do you happen to know if this is correct and maybe further why she returned?
