I know of a family called Halcrow, which is possibly why I think that's what it may be. Mc usually means 'son of' I think- haven't heard of McHalcrow either! Just a guess- someone else may come up with something different! Good luck

Hmmm. There is no death of a female Sa* D*f*n in the indexes at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk so there is not much prospect of finding Sarah's maiden surname there.
The easiest way to find the answer to your question should be to find James' own death certificate.
James Duffin, wife Mary and assorted children are in the 1881 census in Larbert. James' age is given as 61, suggesting he was born around 1819/1820, and his birthplace as Londonderry, Ireland.
The index at Scotland's People lists the death of a James Duffin, aged 62, in 1883 in Larbert. Have you got this death certificate? Does it tell you his mother's maiden surname?
If James was born around 1819 and married Mary Penman in 1861, he was over 40 when he married. Could Mary have been a second wife? There is a James Duffin, aged 30, born Ireland, a labourer, with Scots-born wife Isabella and a son James, aged 1. Could this be your James?
If the death certificate doesn't give his mother's maiden surname you will have to look for a baptism in Derry/Londonderry.

I have found that it always helps to look at the siblings to see whether the names of parents are any clearer on their records.
I have a Jane Duffin marrying an Alexander Penman in Kinnaird, Larbert in 1861. In their case the m.s. of Jane Duffin appears to McGlachlan.
