I have a marriage in Sedbergh, North Yorks Dec 22 1737 between Richard Troughton of Kirkby Kendal and Jane Fridge of Strickland Roger.
As they married by licence, I sent for the licence/bond some time ago only to discover an almighty cock up somewhere along the line! The licences show Richard and Jane to marry completely different people, not each other. I queried it with the Archives but they had no explanation - so we never got to the bottom of it.
I've now decided to take another tack and see if I can find Jane's baptism or birth in Strickland Roger or somewhere nearby - nothing found on Family Search etc.
Does anyone have access to the Strickland Roger PRs and could look for a baptism for a Jane Fridge (or Frigg or similar) around, say, 1705-20?
Thanks,
Jill

I had a quick look for Fridges (and variants) in diocese of Carlisle marriage licences and I don't see any between 1669 and 1788. I was just looking to see if there was a clumping of the surname anywhere. But nothing.

Hi Jillruss
I haven't found any signs of a Jane Fridge being christened at Kendal in the early 1700's most of the christenings for the neighbouring small parishes were registered at Kendal.
I did see the Richard Troughton christened 24 feb 1707
I also found a few christenings for Kendal for a Richard Troughton and a spouse Jane
1/ William 1 apr 1733 2/ Jane 2nd nov 1735 3/ Richard 13th nov 1737
4/Agnes 24th may 1741 5/Thomas 27th march 1743 6/ Margaret 20 jan 1744
7/ Ann 11th sept 1748

Thanks very much for your help, Fellsman.

Just come across this post. It would be pointless looking up Diocese of Carlisle Marriage Licences as Southern Westmorland and Sedbergh were in the Diocese of Chester at that period. Not sure, but I think the licences may have been printed by the Lancashire and Cheshire Society.
