Would anyone be able to suggest if it is possible to order a probate record dated 1771, please?
Collection:  Sussex, Calender of Administrations...Wills
Volume: Administrations in the Consistory Court at Chichester 1775-1800

Thank you, Lisa

Yes, I would think so.  If you contact the West Sussex Records Office they should be able to send you a copy.  I've ordered some wills from them & had no problems,

Hi Jane:

I will check the records office out, thank you for the suggestion.

I ordered records from the Essex Records Office last year and because I live in the states, the payment process was a nightmare.  (The staff was very helpful; paying with American funds was very expensive.)  Hopefully, the West Sussex Records Office has a different payment process.

Thank you for the information, Jane.  It is very much appreciated.

Using a worldwide subscription for an online site, I found the above referenced man:
Thomas Parker, dated 1771, Shipley, Sussex
S 28 1771

-----------------------
Years ago, my aunt gave me a photocopy of a sheet of paper containing names, relationships and dates of a marriage, births and deaths of our Vaus and Cooper ancestors on one side and our Mumford ancestors on the other side.  My ancestors lived in Shipley, Sussex (Horsham and Itchingfield) prior to c1820's.

Written on one side:
"William Cooper  grandfather  Died May 26, 1811   aged 55 years
Susanna Cooper  grandmother  Died Sept 26, 1836  aged 78 years"

I believe Susannah was
Susannah Parker, baptised 23 Apr 1758
Parents Thomas Parker and Sarah

I've been researching for many years and have a lot of information about my Mumford and Vaus ancestors.  I also know a bit about the Coopers and Parkers, including facts about Susannah Parker, which are on this thread:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=427082.0

I really appreciate any help at all with Thomas Parker.  Thank you both for your interest in this thread and a thank you in advance if Nanny Jan is able to find out anything about Thomas Parker.  Sorry for the rushed email - I'm trying to send this before I leave for the day.   :-\

Lisa, found a tree on Ancestry which gives a baptism for Thomas Parker of 1716 at Shipley (Familysearch confirms this)  He was the son of Thomas Parker (1674 -) & Sarah Surgeon (1690 -)  They married 19/6/1711 Shipley.
Strange that the marriage of Thomas junior to a Sarah is not showing on the Sussex Marriage Index.

Hi Lisa

Looking at the record you have found on Ancestry, I think it may be Administration, therefor there may not be a Will

Hi Margp and Jane:

Thank you again for your interest in this thread and for your continued help and suggestions.  I will try the Shipley History Society to see if they might have suggestions.  Thank you for stating that it might not be a will.

My Cooper/Parker ancestor (William and Susannah Cooper's granddaughter) settled in Ontario, Canada in 1857.  A few years ago, a family friend (he is American, I am Canadian and we both live in California) and I were talking about genealogy.  We started talking about our English ancestors and as it turns out, his Cooper ancestor lived in Horsham at the same time that my Vaus ancestors were living there!  We've wondered if our Coopers could be related (since my Coopers were living nearby in Shipley), but since Cooper was most likely a common name, it has been difficult to pursue this idea.  It would be an amazing coincidence if we were to find out that we are distantly related!

Again, thank you for your help.   :)

Hi Jane:

Looking at the Ancestry tree, apparently one child of Thomas Parker and Sarah Surgeon was Philip.  Apparently, Sarah Parker had a sister named Philadelphia.  Since Philadelphia is a somewhat unique name, I've wondered why she was given that name.  Perhaps she was named after her uncle?

I will try to follow up on Thomas Parker and Sarah Surgeon's children, to see if there might be any indication that these people are related.

Thank you both for your help.   :)

Hi Lisa

You could check the list of people in the tree, to see if any of your ancestors are there

Philadelphia was quite a popular name in these times, particularly in Sussex for some reason :-\

Hi Margp:  Regarding the tree, Thomas Parker was born in 1716 and died in 1771.  They do not show a wife or children.   :-\

Jane:  It's good to know that Philadelphia was a popular name then; that could explain things.

Thomas Parker (1716-1771) apparently was buried in Shipley, in St. Mary's churchyard.  When I have time tonight, I will check to see how many churches were in the Shipley area.  My Vaus ancestor (who died 1796) was buried in St. Mary's cemetery and I believe it was his son who donated a bell to St. Mary's.  It will be interesting to see if St. Mary's was one of many churches in the area, or one of a handful - was it just coincidence that they were buried in the same cemetery, or did the families have connections.   ;)

PS  Again, thank you for your help.

At this date there was only one anglican/parish church in Shipley, St Mary's, so probably no coincidence  that your Shipley ancestors were buried in the churchyard there.

Hi Nell:

Thank you for letting me know.   :)
---------------
Last night I was trying to find out more about Sarah Surgeon (still hoping for a clue that might uncover more about Susannah Parker's parents/ancestors.)  I found very little information, but a Hannah Surgeon married a Geo Foster/Faster in Shipley in 1828 - update:  I should have typed 1728.  There were additional marriage records for Surgeon's in the Shipley area - perhaps I may find clues as I try to research them.
--------------
Thank you again, Nell.

Lisa, the SMI states that Hannah was of the parish of Shipley & George was from Isfield, Sussex at the time of their marriage,

Thank you for the added information, Jane.  Every little bit helps.  I appreciate the lookups, the suggestions, and thoughts about my ancestors.  When I hit deadends with the Vaus, Cooper, Parker lines I "left the county" and started searching for other lines in Essex.  I have to reacquaint myself with Sussex information again.

It's helpful to know that Hannah was of the parish of Shipley at the time of her marriage.

William Penn had strong links to the Shipley / Horsham / West Grinstead / Thakeham and Warminghurst areas of Sussex and in 1652 he founded the city of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania.

Many of the original Sussex Quakers are my ancestors and some of them went with him to America, others stayed behind.

I imagine this is why so many children were given the name Philadelphia - after a while it probably caught on even amongst families who chose not to embrace this new faith.

Hi Liz:

Thank you for sharing the information.  It is always fascinating to learn about the history of an area or learn about little things that went on when my ancestors were alive.  I envy those who are able to walk the same streets and go into some of the old buildings.   :)

Thank you for your help, Liz, it is appreciated.
