I am seeking the burial plot for Harry John Jay, who was born at Ipswich, Suffolk in 1866.
He passed away on the 9th of December 1915 at Barkingside in Essex.
I have a remembrance card for the funeral which states that he was buried at Barkingside Cemetary - Plot D134.
Now the problem begins....
I am trying to locate the burial plot and would love to know if there is a gravestone.
I have contacted Forest Park Cemetary and Crematorium, who have told me that he is not buried in the cemetary. They have suggested that he is likely to have been buried at the Holy Trinity Church in Barkingside. I have contacted the church, but at the moment it does not have a vicar, so I have been unable to progress further.
Does anyone in the area have access to a site plan for the burials at Holy Trinity in Barkingside, or has anyone got any suggestions where to go next?

when we didn't have a vicar for 18 months I still did look up's people got in touch via the church wardens

Found this online:
Barkingside Cemetery is a municipal cemetery, opened in 1922/23.
A burial at the church is looking more likely.

Have spoken to Rippleside Cemetary today, and its not them. They suggest that it could be the City Cemetary.
Spoke to the City Cemetary, and its not them. They suggest Manor Park Cemetary which is just across the road. This may be possible as they were living at Manor Park in the 1901 census.
Manor Park don't look up burials and point to deceased on line. Have tried a free search with no result..
With a date of death, and a remembrance card with the Cemetary and plot number, you would expect this to be simple, but its certainly posing to be difficult.
Anyone with local knowledge of the cemetaries in this area, who may have any ideas would be appreciated.

Lots of my relatives from 1889 to 1920 are buried at manor park. That's forest gate. I had a look at the parish records for there but no joy. Nothing at manor park either.
When I emailed the cemetery, they were able to confirm the plots. However, when we visited, the plots were very dilapidated. They care for them as next they can, but land has sunk and gravestones have weathered and toppled. I believe that the graves are 'recycled' after a hundred years.

There's a Mary Ann as his wife of twenty years on the 1911 census and a Marianne jay buried at manor park cemetery 26 August 1915. It says there are three other burials in the grave, but you have to buy credits to view them (a couple of quid). Sad if the children lost both parents in the same year. Youngest would only have been 15.
He moved around a bit. Had children born in shoreditch, east ham and Hoxton.
Address is 1 Florence road, birkbeck road, Barkingside, ilford.

Yes, you have the right family.
The details which I have so far are as follows...
Harry John Jay was born at Ipswich in 1866.
He married Mary Ann Mann in the June qtr of 1892 at Hackney.
Their first child Henry A Jay was born at Hoxton in 1894
Their next child Beatrice Jay at Hoxton in 1895
Their final child Florence Catherine Jay (My grandmother) was born at Manor Park in 1901.
In the 1901 census, they were living at Manor Park.
I hadn't found them in the 1911 census. It is great to have their address... Has me wondering if it still exists now.
From what my gran told me years ago, they did have quite a sad upbringing. Harry Jay's father died when he was only 3 years old. His father was only 29 years old when he died. Harry was brought up at Ipswich by his mother and stepfather. He was a bricklayer by trade and moved to the Barkingside area for work.
Harry died of Rheumatic Fever on the 9th of December 1915. Mary Ann brought up the children on her own until she remarried to a Henry J Bird (Derby Bird) at Romford in the Sept qtr 1921.
The two girls didn't get on with their stepfather. Beatrice was forced in to domestic service, and Florence married in order to avoid the same.
I am able to count out the Marianne Jay at Manor Park.
My mother can recall visiting Mary Ann in the late 1930's/early 1940's. She was living with her son and his wife in Ilford. Sadly, she had suffered a stroke and was unable to talk. I have not managed to find her death record, although I assume it was not long after the visits.

1891 boarder in shoreditch. Says he was a cowman. Living at 43 Shepherdess Walk ... Sounds quaint ... Bet shoreditch wasn't quaint then.

There's a death for Mary Ann bird in ilford march 1951. Birth date is 1873, which is about right. Couldn't find a burial record in ilford though on SEAX.
There's also one for 1942 Essex South Western district, which borders ilford.

Thank you for managing to fill in some of the gaps for me.
Although Beatrice, had a hard start, she went on to have a very happy life. She married and settled down in Southend on Sea. I remember her well when I was young. She was a lovely lady.
Thank you for the 1891 details. They do seem to have lived in some very poor areas.
Again, thank you for the 1911 details. The family will be very interested in what they were doing.
My mother can't remember visiting Mary Ann after the early 1940's. She was very ill at the time, and was living with her son. My mother seems to recall that it was Ilford, although she was very young at time. I think that if the 1951 death is the one, they would have continued visiting. I wonder if the 1942 death could be the one, especially if it borders Ilford. Do you have any more details of it?

Hi. No sorry ... No more details of the 1942 one. You could pally for the death cert. if you do, go straight to the GRO site, as it's much cheaper (about a tenner). If they can't find the cert, they refund you. I searched around ilford and barking parishes but no burial. Will have a look at woodford later, as that could be Essex South Western.
Yes does seem a sad life. Glad they went on to have happier times. Give me a shout if I can help find anything else :-)

I think it will be worth getting the certificate.
Looking at a map of the area, Manor Park Cemetary is just at the end of Manor Park Road. Iam hoping this may be the one.
