James O'Neill born on the 12th March 1940 in Ireland, died 2005 in Erewash (April?).
Emigrated from Ireland to England at some point in his life and was married in 1967.
I'm looking for where in Ireland he was born. He has also been known to be called Jim and Seamus (perhaps his name prior to migrating over to England).
Any help would be great, especially a mother's maiden name.

His marriage certificate would have his father's name. You could then apply for a birth certificate with the details you have.

I have found a death notice for the first James, 20th December 2013.

It would be fairly unusual to name a boy James Seamus (like calling him James James in England).

Sounds as though his name was James but he was known as Seamus by family or friends.
However there is a possiblity that his birth is registered as Seamus rather than James. You would really need more information before deciding you have found the correct birth record.

I'm not familiar with Irish Birth Registration but in England you had 42 days (I think) to register a birth, if Ireland was similar then the birth could have been registered in the April to June quarter

Think it was about the same here at the time, Andy. Was also going to mention that the child could have been registered without christian name(s) being chosen and thus would be harder to identify in the civil index.

If that's the case then the index only shows the quarter (not the month) of registration. Therefore, it will be Jan.-Mar., Apr.-June, July-Sept. or Oct.-Dec. not a precise month.

Yes, and the only two records were the two I found earlier, and if registered in the month or so after, there's one more now

He was definitely registered with his name, I was old that much.
The annoying thing is, I have his actual date of birth, I just can't find where he was born :(

How does your source know that 'he was definitely registered with his name'? Parents can register a child without forenames being chosen (although it is very much frowned upon now) and then have the child's name added so that when a birth certificate is purchased the child's full name is shown.

You could order both birth certificates and check the birthdates. Were any siblings ever mentioned?

Ah, was confused because you said 'moved to Ireland.' I would be inclined to start with marriage certificate to see father's name. If we have that we might be able to find the names of the parents for those 2 possible births...

There seems to be five James O'Neill births registered in Ireland in April to June 1940 which could be him. Do you know for certain whether he had a middle name or not? If you are not sure it might be worth seeing if you can find him on an electoral roll as that would normally have his full name.
Also, do you know whether he was born in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland?

Problem with getting the birth certificates is that they might both show a different birthdate. A relative of my father's has 3 birthdates- 1) on baptism record, 2) on birth registration and 3) the one his mother insisted was correct!
Added- Northern Ireland births in online index only go up to 1921.

It does look as though you will have to purchase the marriage certificate to get his father's name and then take it from there.
If they married in a church and you are local, you may be able to ask for a search but with it being a fairly recent marriage, there could be reluctance to give that information out.

Many people confected middle names in adulthood to give them 'gravitas' or to honour an ancestor :) or sometimes the parents had a child registered or baptised with only one name then added a middle name later.

He was known as Seamus but this is the Irish name for James so... :/

Don't forget to ask for a research cert they are cheaper.
In my experience people at that time were usually officially given the English version of their name and called by the Irish version.

You can order a research cert for €4 and you can order with just his date of birth too along with James or Seamus, I'd say he was registered with the name James though....
If that doesn't bring results then get his marriage cert to check his fathers name

By chance I came across your posts while searching for info about a James/Jimmy O'Neill who could also have been known as Big Seamus. I'm new to this site and still trying to find my way around it! Did you ever find out anything about him?
