Where is the Library?
hi--manchester library is in st peters square just off peter st, just across the road is the midland hotel, and situated in st peters sq is the peace gardens.
the metro link trams stop right outside so it is quite easy to get to from any part of manchester--the manchester town hall is just round the corner--you can also view it on google maps--put in mount street

Thanks for that, bluemoon alan.  I did look at the website but the address/location isn't mentioned, think they presume everyone knows!!  Hope to visit soon to trace my great grandmother born Manchester 1843 ish.  Jazgran

Being a bit ring rusty  :(

With the library reopening has Elliot house now shut and records moved back?

And is the County Records Office in Marshall St still open or has that moved to the Library?

Cheers

hi bf,
elliot house is now empty, if you go onto www.bruntwood.co.uk there are photos of the building as it is now-- and what a beautiful building it is--i believe it was a register office for bmd in former years.
Also i understand all the records from the county records office on marshall st-which is off rochdale rd near the cis building are now at manchester libary.

Hi all,

Yes, this is correct.  The County Record office that was based at Marshall Street is now located in Central Library.  It's on the ground floor level at Central.  Also, at Central are Manchester Local Studies Library (formerly found at City Library on Deansgate), Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society, NW Film Archives and the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre.  These now all form the partnership called  'Archives +'.

Note:   if you want something from retrieved the Archives you must give 48 hours notice.

How do I access the Family History Help desk at the Library please?

(I seem to go round in circles when I try searching the Site for that!)

Hi Romilly

The Family History Help Desk is run by The Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society.
http://www.mlfhs.org.uk/

Help is available at the MLFHS Family History Help Desk located on the Ground Floor at Central Library  Monday - Friday 10:30am - 3:30pm.

Please note: They are not able to give 'over the phone' advice.  Main phone number for the Society is 0161-234-1060.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the further info california dreamin.

I'm just outside of London, - and so Manchester is a bit of a trek(!)  ;D

That's a shame that they don't do 'phone help', but I can quite understand why...
I've spent more years than I like to admit to looking for a Birth for my late Grandfather, William James Wilson, who was allegedly born in Manchester in 1860/'61. I can't find him:-(

to romilly,
i to have found the website hard to use-there is a website called -GREATERMANCHESTERLIVES- it is a searchable website with info about books/documents/books/and photos held in local history libaries. the website for the libary is manchester.gov/libraries.
you can also pay for the staff to research for you-as you are probably aware
