Post by: tim foster on Sunday 23 February 14 18:26 GMT (UK)
Looking for the passenger list for John Burton. He shows up in marriage announcement in 1854 marrying Mary Murphy of St. George New Brunswick. They settled in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. I believe he arrive in Saint John, New Brunswick for the marriage announcement show him from Saint John.

Hi,

Welcome to Rootschat

Although it is not definite information, (dates very often can be wrong)  the 1901 census says John immigrated 1846. It might be possible that he travelled via the USA  ???
Canadian Passenger Lists on anc start in 1865  ::)

There was this thread posted in Canada Resources - Ship Passenger Lists to Canada Before 1865.

Looked in here, but only one Burton, ( not yours) but you can look for other spellings, or for other rellies who may have come over.

It is hard to trace back to Ireland at the best of times unless more than country of origin is stated somewhere....but here is a link to some of our resources you can look through

For those searching here is some marriage/birth info for the daughters on the FHS site.....
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0yng/   Too bad the death of John in 1905 didn't have his place of origin...or better yet...parents!!!
There is info on Archibald (Cambridge, Mass.) Thomas & William John http://www.archives.gnb.ca/Archives/?culture=en-CA

Not that is helps a huge amount, but does narrow the search slightly... Margaret's birth info under Provincial Returns of Births and Late Registrations says her father was occupation Baker, from Befast Ireland, mother from Newtownards. She states same on her sister's Mary's death cert, altho she only says Ireland for their mother.

and for anyone searching...cemetery info http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nbstandr/standrewsruralcem/saruralsecb.htm  http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nbstandr/standrewsruralcem/saruralseca1.htm

Hello, I am a direct descendant of John Burton, and would love to find out more about him. I show him   being born 14 Sep 1831 in Northern Ireland, immigrating in 1846, marrying Mary Murphy on 27 Sep 1854, and working in New Brunswick as a grocer. I believe Mary Murphy immigrated in 1846 from Northern Ireland, possibly with parents Thomas Murphy and Ellen ???.

Hello again after many years. Tim Foster posted in 2016 that Mary Murphy's parents were Thomas and Ellen Murphy, per the 1851 census record. However, that census record shows that Mary Murphy and her siblings had all been born in New Brunswick, after Thomas and Ellen Murphy migrated from Ireland in 1826. On the other hand, all of the census records after Mary Murphy married John Burton indicate that Mary was born in Ireland (Newtownards, I believe), and migrated circa 1846. This has led me to conclude that the Mary Murphy shown in the 1851 census record was probably not the Mary Murphy that married John Burton. I also have a letter from Mary's grandson Halbert which states that Mary's Irish accent was so thick as to be unintelligible, which suggests that she was in fact born in Ireland. One possibility is that the Thomas Murphy in the 1851 census was her uncle. Any additional info anyone can share would be very much appreciated. -Regards, Grant Burton

Mary's death record also indicates she was born in Ireland.  A delayed birth record for daughter Margaret indicates that her mother was born in Newtownards while her father was born in Belfast. By all accounts and evidence they were married in New Brunswick or perhaps they were married in Ireland before coming to Canada.  Have you found any evidence for either?

Actually, here's the reference to their marriage in 1854 in NB:

Mary is said to have been from St. Patrick, Charlotte County.
