Title: O'Brien Brothers
Post by: GeriK64 on Monday 24 February 14 12:52 GMT (UK)
Hello, my great grandfather Daniel O'Brien emigrated to Philadelphia in 1895, from what I gather he came from Roscommon. He had two brothers Patrick and Martin who also went to Philadelphia, they all later moved to South Dakota. I'm trying to find out anything about them before they left for USA, when they lived in Roscommon. Any help is appreciated.  :)

Hello,

Do you have years of birth for the brothers?
Are there any immigration records available?
Are their any records which would show their father's names - marriage or death certificates?

Is this Martin - I see this one has children born in Pennsylvania?  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M6NT-KY4

Hi Heywood,

Yes that's the correct information, I have the obituary's for the three brothers from the local paper in Lead, Lawrence County SD.  Two of them died in Gold mining accidents. I have contacted Philadelphia on how to obtain the marriage cert. as I have the marriage license. It was from the obituary that I found out they came from Roscommon. I always thought it was Westport as that's where my great grandmother went home to after the accident as she had no means of support out there in SD.  So I'm not up to date on where to start in Roscommon?

Thanks for your help
Geri

I'm not sure when she returned between 1907 and 1910, she re-married and then came to live here in Scotland.

Hello Geri,

I have had a look at some church and civil records for Roscommon and come up with possible parents of Patrick and Mary. Would I be correct in thinking Martin was over 5 years older than your Daniel.

Hi Padraig,
The rough dates I have are
Patrick born 1870
Martin born 1874
Daniel born 1877
We could probably give or take a year on each.

Thanks
Geri  :)

Hello Geri,

The site https://www.rootsireland.ie/ offers you an opportunity to do searches and an option to add parental details in order to reduce the possible matches . Once you have a possible you should visit the individual county page from the map on the home page. The returns I got from a free search :-

DANIEL 1869 Parish: CASTLEREA (RC)  PARENTS: PATRICK AND MARY
DANIEL 1869 Parish: BALLINLOUGH (CP) PARENTS: PATRICK AND MARY
DANIEL 1874 Parish: CASTLEREA (RC) PARENTS: PATRICK AND MARY
DANIEL 1874 Parish: BALLINLOUGH (CP) PARENTS: PATRICK AND MARY
MARTIN 1865 Parish: CASTLEREA (RC) PARENTS: PATRICK AND MARY
MARTIN 1861 Parish: CASTLEREA (RC) PARENTS: MARTIN AND MARY
MARTIN 1862 Parish: CASTLEREA (RC) PARENTS: JOHN AND ELIZABETH
MARTIN 1879 Parish: AUGHRIM (RC) PARENTS: JAMES AND BRIGID
PATRICK 1878 Parish: BALLINLOUGH (CP) PARENTS: PATRICK AND MARY
PATRICK 1878 Parish: BALLINLOUGH RC (RC) PARENTS: PATRICK AND MARY
PATRICK 1873 Parish: BALLINAMEEN (CP) PARENTS: PATRICK AND MARY
PATRICK 1867 Parish: CASTLEREA (RC) PARENTS: PATRICK AND MARY

I would suggest you start with the least common Christian name, either Daniel or Martin and use a +/- 10 year period from 1874 and progressively narrow your search. You can further narrow the search by identifying a church baptism (RC) and what was also obligatory a civil record of a birth by identifying the registration district (CP) within what are loosely called Civil Parishes. The Civil records at LDS.org will identify Civil Registration Districts(CRD’s) which may differ to those at rootsireland only because rootsireland have broken the CRD’s into their respective sub districts to aid research.

From shipping lists there appears to be two Daniels of interest on the Ellis Island site. One aged 29 , a collier travelling with a wife Eliz aged 24  arriving May 25, 1895 and another aged 23 , a carpenter travelling with other O’Brien’s arriving Mar 30, 1896

Keep in mind that the Ellis Island site only has passenger lists going to New York.  If they went to Philadelphia, they may have sailed to Philadelphia.  There are Philadelphia passenger lists available for searching here - https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1921481

The South Dakota death index has a Daniel J. Obrine (note the misspelling on the surname) listed as having died 31 Dec. 1905 in Lawrence Co.  Maybe that's him?
