Title: Information for Hugh Baillie Born abt 1825 in Stoneykirk
Post by: YO8 on Saturday 01 March 14 19:51 GMT (UK)
Could anyone help me find the birth record for Hugh Baillie who on the 1841 Scotland census is aged 16. I think he was employed on a farm Caringarrosh with Margaret Tally aged 42 and Margaret Spratt aged 20. He moved to Dailly in Ayrshire and married Margaret McChesney in 1862 and died in 1882. On his death record his parents are named John Baillie and Margaret Rollie again I cannot find any record for them or any other children they may have had

Have you seen the 1851 entry for him - he is shown as the son of Margaret Sally(Tally??) You would have to check the actual 1851 image on SP as I only have the transcription

There is also a daughter Margaret Sproat (Spratt??)

The family is in Stonykirk

Hi

Have you seen my 1851 census reply above?  Looks like his mother may have re-married as the names seem the same as you quoted for the 1841 entry

I discounted this I managed to get death records for both of the Margaret's and I am convinced he was an employee with them. He is on the 1861 census in Dailly address Knockgerran as a ploughman with the Mackie family, it would appear he met his wife Margaret McChesney on that farm they married in 1862

Hi YOB,
I would agree with Carole - Hugh Baillie is recorded as Margaret Sally's son in the 1851 Census according to FreeCen's transcription . Could Margaret Rollie/Tally/Sally all be the same person?

Hi loobylooayr, This was my first thoughts different spellings etc but as I am unable to find a birth record for him or any brothers or sisters it made me think although on the census records I have managed to obtain Stoneykirk is stated as the place of birth. On his death record it states his parents as John Baillie and Margaret Rollie. I started to think that perhaps they migrated from Ireland to work on the farms but once again I've drawn a blank, so the search continues. Thanks for your help it may well stop me going off on a tangent

Hi again,
Yes I don't think getting to the bottom of this will be easy :).
Just remember the names recorded on the Death certificate have been given to the Registar by the informant of Hugh's death. This info is only as good as the knowledge/memory of that person.
Margaret Roney (she's Rooney by 1871 :) ) could be a widow, she could hve been married to a John Baillie and then again she may never have married and is just calling herself a widow. And as you said earlier - she could have been either an employer or fellow workmate of Hugh's.

Who does Hugh name as his parents on his marriage cert in 1862? That info would be more reliable than the death cert as Hugh would provide it himself.

This is more or less my thoughts, given at the time information was provided, it could well be pronunciations and the way they have been written, then interpreted by the transcriber of the records, it does make the search interesting

Right so Hugh gave those names and declared his father as deceased and not his mother.
Of course Margaret Baillie/ Rollie could have returned to using her maiden name when widowed , that was common practice at that time - if she ever used her married name in the first place.
Also if Hugh had been illegitimate, he may have been known by his father's name.

Looks like the search continues using Rollie / Roney etc in Stoneykirk in mid 1820's

Yes looks like it ;D.
Plus it looks like Margaret's daughter Margaret Sproat/Sprott never married. So the name Sproat/Sprott was probably her natural father's. If the family were Church of Scotland there is a chance Margaret snr. was called up before the Kirk Session because of her misdemeanors (if she was pregnant outside marriage) and there may be a record of this in the Kirk Session Minutes.

The search continues I also concluded Margaret Sproat never married! I found a death cert for a Margaret Sproat in Stoneykirk in 1896 the informant was  W Johnstone (son) fathers name - Sproat farmer and mother - Sproat nee Roney. confusing or what?

It's a bit of a tangled web.
Good luck with your search.
