Title: Service Number?
Post by: wrjones on Thursday 06 March 14 09:48 GMT (UK)
What records or info can I find out simply from someone's service number?

William Russell Jones.

This is a bit of an old "chestnut" for me.It refers to the appearance given on the Kranji War Memorial Singapore of a Harry Leslie Evans given as Gunner Harry Leslie Evans 1468343 of 95 Anti-Tank Regiment Roval Artillery 29/09/1942 given as aged 30.

It is frustrating that on the page of the record showing on Ancestry, there are 18 entries of which this Harry Leslie Evans is the only one given without any spouse or parents details.

Service records of people serving after 1921 will still be with the MOD. Information regarding this can be found here.

Thanks Trevor, lets just say you have hit the nail on the head. Those are the exact birth details that I have for him!He was born in Bagillt Flintshire in 1912 as you say with a mother's maiden name of Conway. You will have to back to 1892 for his parents marriage! That of a Thomas Evans and an Alice Conway. This Alice was the eldest sister of my Grandmother.

The only thing I'm looking for really is some proof that the Harry Leslie listed as dying in Singapore and mine are one and the same.It is perhaps of interest that this Harry Leslie is not named on the Bagillt War Memorial.

There are two Files at Kew that refer to the 85th A/Tank Rgt Casualties

WO 361/1110 and WO 361/1208

Not sure if these will give you what you are looking for though.
Contents of the WO 361 Series are quite variable.

It is possible that C.W.G.C. have more than is listed on the Web site.
A call to the enquiries section has helped me out many times.

01628 507200 is the No to use.

Hi I am currently researching the Lloyd family of Flint. Charlotte Jones, (her sister married a Lloyd),  was Harry Evans' wife.  The family have two letters received by Charlotte confirming Harry's capture by the Japanese and his subsequent death.  There is also a picture of the grave stone, and a picture of a memorial with Harry's name on it. The service number the family have for Harry is the same service record number given on the records you have viewed.

First of all a very warm welcome to Rootschat. Now that you've given me the name of Harry Leslie's wife it seems they married in 1936 in what is given on North Wales BMD as a Holywell Civil Marriage.

Harry Leslie Evans is one of the most obstinate of my relatives to find info for.Confusingly there are two Harry Leslie Evans' who were born in Bagillt Flintshire at around the same time.Until I found the death in World War Two I had been on a few false trails.I'd very much welcome any info you may have on Charlotte Jones. It is somewhat more difficult at the moment in that the Ancestry Site is down.

Hi
I am confident that the  Harry Leslie Evans buried in Singapore is Charlotte Jones' husband because of the  service number.  I am researching the Lloyd side of the family at the moment and not the Jones side.  I do have some information on Charlotte's parents, grandparents and siblings.  I will ask the Lloyd's if they are happy for me to pass the information on to you.

Regards,

Jackie

Hi,

Sadly Charlotte and Harry didn't have children and she never remarried.  My clients middle name is Leslie and this was as a tribute to Harry Leslie as my client is Charlotte's sisters son.  Sad story really.

Hope this helps,

Jackie

Hi Jackie,

I have joined rootschat, Charlotte Evans (maiden name Jones) was my mother's eldest sister, I am very interested in Harry Leslie Evans and have a postcard of the 85th Anti-tank regiment which I think may have been taken in Durban before leaving for Singapore. My wife and I visited Kranji war memorial in Singapore around April 17th for the first time this year and laid a poppy cross on his grave from the Flint Legion Branch. It is a sad story as they were only married for three years, I was very close to Charlotte and the wreath was laid on her behalf. His name is on the Flint cenotaph and on a memorial plaque in the Flint legion and the new Doctor's surgery in Flint.

Regards.

Hi William,

Four photographs i.e. one taken with what I believe could be three of your relatives, one of the 85th Anti tank regiment, I think it was taken in Durban before setting sail on the Narkunda troop ship as part of the reinforcement convoy. Harry is the fourth from the left. A personal postcard of Harry and one photograph taken on a cart being pulled by a native, on the back of the postcard it reads 'wishing you a merry christmas which is in 1941

Best wishes.
