Title: Looking for Auntie Betty
Post by: carol80 on Saturday 15 March 14 23:22 GMT (UK)
Hi, Help needed please. I am looking for;
Betty Stonehouse b 1913 in Durham the daughter of Edwin Stonehouse and his third wife Minnie Muir.
My Mum told me years ago that she was a Matron in a hospital. Her notes say: "Only Betty lived beyond childhood and now lives in Aberdeen aged 82. As at 1995"( referring to the children of Edwin and Minnie) She was the half sister of my Grandad.
I am hoping to find out about her nursing carer and which hospital's she worked in. Can any one help?
I started this topic in the Common Room but as i now know where she was i have posted here.

Edit: she died 1998.

Did you check freebmd births - she was born as Winifred B Stonehouse

No I didn't. I keep forgetting about FreeBMD. But in my notes that i am slowly reading through she has Winifred Betty know as Betty. Thank you.
Just need to find out about her nursing carer and where she trained. She never married.

Aberdeen city archives are a wonderful source of information, and I seem to remember that they have a almost complete record of hospitals in Aberdeen. I would suggest sending them an email to see if they can help - archives@aberdeencity.gov.uk

Good luck

I think you may find that the hospital records are in the Grampian Health Board Archives, rather than Aberdeen City Archives; and that they are housed in Aberdeen University Library.

Whether they contain details of staff rather than patients I do not know; or whether, if they do have staff records, the more recent ones are closed to researchers.

Hi

There is a list of Aberdeen Hospitals here:

http://www.mcjazz.f2s.com/Hospitals.htm

I worked at a Research Unit at Foresterhill in the 1970s and had to go around quite a few of the hospitals collecting information. They have changed considerably over the years.

As Forfarian says, there might be a restriction on any records. Have you thought of  looking for an obituary (Press and Journal Archives for e.g.). This might give info on her appointments.

However, it does have the caveat that:

Researchers should note that records containing confidential personal or medical information are normally closed for periods of 75 or 100 years.

There was a wee snippet in The Scotsman, February 28th 1938, announcing that Winifred B Stonehouse passed her nursing exam at The Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen.

As i live in New Zealand it is a bit hard to pop in and look at records.
Thanks to everyone for their help

Also in the Aberdeen P & J - 28th February 1938

It just lists her as passing the final examination of the General Nursing Council for  Scotland. Hospital was RVI, Aberdeen.

If you're not in UK (via libraries/universities) , you can probably access them via the British Newspaper Archive:

or Scotsman Archive

Depending on where you are in New Zealand you can access the 19th Century British Newspapers online for free through your council using your library card. Not all councils subscribe.

Gadget has already given you a link to the Scotsman (I get access for free with my library card).

It's definitely worth a browse around your council's library website for online resources available.

I was wondering if the Aberdeen P & J might have an archive search prior to 2006  and after 1953, for a possible obituary. It would probably give more info than our earlier finds.

Here's the link to the P&J Digital Archive:

http://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/ClipSearch/

There's a 'Contact Us' link which might be worth pursuing.

I believe that the Aberdeenshire library service have archives of the P&J in their headquarters building. As far as I'm aware, these are held on microfiche and you have to make an appointment to go and look. At least that was the procedure the last time I was looking for something a few years ago.

It just so happens that the place in question is only 5 minuites walk from my house, and if you can't get access through your library in NZ, I can pop in some day and see if I could get a printout and send it to you.

I was in the Aberdeen Public Library a couple of weeks ago. They have the P and J on microfilm, not microfiche, and they fetched me the film I wanted without advance notice, and ten minutes before closing time.

Was that the central library along from His Majesty's?
Last time I was looking for something was a few years ago, so the procedure has obviously changed in that time.

I live just round the corner from the headquarters in Oldmeldrum, so it's easy for me to get there.

Rowan. A copy would be fantastic. My library's computers have been down since Friday. They are going to ring me when they are back up and running so we can  have a look and see what papers can be accessed. They do have ancestry and find my past which i should be able to get at home through my library card.

Carol,
Sorry I have not got back to you for a while. Other things kind of got in the way!

Anyway, I went into the Aberdeenshire Library headquarters last week, and I'm sorry to report that they don't have the particular information that we're looking for. However, the good news is that the library in Aberdeen (as posted by Forfarian) DO have a copy. I hope to be in Aberdeen some time next week, so I'll pop in and see what they've got.

As has been said already, the NHS records are held by Aberdeen University Special collections, and confidential records are closed for 75 or 100 years. However it also says -
"NHS Grampian Archives provides public access to historical records of hospitals and health organisations in the north-east of Scotland. Records of particular interest to family historians include:

Hospital administrative and staff records containing information on managers, medical, nursing and other healthcare staff"

Acess is by apointment only, but as I will be practically passing the door anyway, I may just drop in and ask in general terms what is available.

Watch this space - But don't hold your breath ! !

Is the lady still alive?  If not, you may be able to find her death in scotlandspeople website, which would give you a date.   Then with the date, it may be possible to find a death announcement in the Press and Journal - very often you will find that the death notice will contain detail of where the person worked if they did something in the community where they were well-known.
