Title: Phil Taylor - Ice Skater
Post by: Moscatella on Monday 17 March 14 13:00 GMT (UK)
I am hoping someone can help me to find out more about Phil Taylor's birth and family - parents, grandparents. Googling his name tells me he was born 1895 (but where??) and died 1959 in New York. From his marriage record to Jane Elizabeth Olwen Bicknell (born Liss, Hampshire) in 1917 his father was George Henry Taylor, a Butcher. Other than that I and an Australian descendant have drawn a blank on his family background.

His daughter (Olwen) Megan Taylor became a professional figure skater and is fairly well documented. It's her father that's the mystery ??? ???

Apparently he served in the Canadian Army during World War I  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0yi8/
There is a Philip Taylor in the Canadian Soldiers of the First World War database, born in 1895.   http://www.rootschat.com/links/0yig/

Interesting to note that all the sites I can find state the daughter was born Megan Olwen Devenish Taylor b.25/10/1920 Rochdale, Greater Manchester - this is untrue.   She was born Olwen M. Taylor in Kingston, Surrey (the same place her parents married in 1917) so don't know where Rochdale comes from??

According to this link, the family emigrated to Canada in 1901, but it shows Phil(ip) and brother John b.England.  There's quite a gap between John and Edith, which makes me wonder whether Nellie was George's second wife (and, therefore, not the mother of Philip and John).

Edited to add this link from 1906, which shows just George with the two boys.

George Taylor    35     Milkman     b. North Tawton, Devon
Ada Taylor     35                          b. Islington, London
Philip Taylor  5                             b. Southend, Essex
Alice Taylor   4                                   ditto

A quick look at earlier records shows George Henry Taylor bc.1865 was son of a Philip and Mary.   His birth entry would appear to be the Mar.1866 entry for Barnstaple regn. district (which covered North Tawton) for George H. Taylor.

It appears that he died in Arizona, not New York.

Unfortunately there were TWO Philip Taylors, Ice Skaters. The one who lost his leg in WWI was not the Philip Taylor I'm researching.  I also think the Philip Taylor born Southend on Sea is not related either.  "Our" Philip was supposedly born in London, but I can't find his birth or baptism there. His marriage is at least now defined - 29 November 1917, Wimbledon, and his father was George Henry Taylor, butcher.
Thanks for everyone for their input.  I'm still hoping for a snippet of info which may link Philip with his ancestry.
Cheers,  Meredith

I think I'm confused - did the Phil Taylor you're looking for have daughters by those names?

Hi,  Philip and his wife Jane Elizabeth Olwen nee Bricknell had one daughter - Megan Olwen Devenish Taylor, born 1920 in Wimbledon, London.  Philip married a second time in America, to Lois McCormack )and had two sons (Philip and Stephen).  For someone as famous as Philip and Megan ( both skated in the Winter Olympics and around the world ) I thought I'd be able to find a biography of them somewhere - but no luck so far.
Still digging!
Thanks for your interest - please keep delving for me?

The obituary I linked to above seems to have a good deal of detail about his life.  It seems to say that he served in WWI with the Canadian army, so there may be some record of that if the ones mentioned above are incorrect.  As far as his family of birth, it mentions him being survived by a sister, a brother, a half-sister, & two half-brothers, so that may help with figuring out how the siblings fit together.

Thanks, Shelley.  Yes, I've got these people sketched out on a tree, but just can't get any further.  I think I may have exhausted the on-line records now, as the wonderful Rootschatters would have found something new by now.
Thanks to you, and all those who have contributed to my search efforts - this forum is just amazing, the way it has people all over the world chatting and helping each other out.
I still have hope in tracing Philip back through his father George Henry Taylor, born 1887 in North Tawton - he is the connection with our ancestry which I am so keen to tidy up.  Philip and his daughter's lives are a fascinating part of the story, but until I can formally prove their connection, I will have to keep delving away.
Thanks again,
Meredith

Phil Taylor was my husband's Uncle.  I don't have much info on him, other that he was a world champion skater .  He was born November 11 or 12, 1895 in Southend on Sea, England.  I do have information on his sister May (Alice) and brother John.  I too am looking for more information on the family.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

I do know the Philip you are referring to.  Some records I checked say he was born in Southend on Sea or Islington, London.

The following is some basic information on Phil Taylor (not the one who lost his leg) that I found since my original post on this subject. Errors and confusions abound, but the following is from reliable sources.

Philip George Taylor b.1895 Southend-on-Sea, Essex (Father George Henry, butcher)

George emigrated with his family to Canada before WWI. Philip served in Canadian Overseas Force.

Married Jane Elizabeth Olwen Bicknell 29 Nov. 1917 in St Mary's Church, Wimbledon

Philip & Jane had 3 children together: Olwen Megan 1920-1993, Stephen George & Philip Bert

Phil Taylor died 1959 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Ooops...Before I get shot at....Sorry folks, what was I just saying about errors??? :-[ :o ;)

Philip's second wife was Lois Ann McCormack, by whom I think he had the two sons, possibly both born in Phoenix.

Hi Jen,  I've just received another message from Carol Taylor (Red Deer), re our common relative Philip Taylor.  As you are his direct descendant, we are very keen to make contact with you and find out more about him and his family.
Hope you don't feel we're pressuring you, so perhaps you could respond on my email and reassure me that we're OK: (*)
We were in Canada in May/June last year, but didn't have the opportunity to visit Manitoba, or do any further research into the Taylor line of our family.

Regards from very hot South Australia,
Meredith

Hi, my great grandfather, Sidney Charlton, used to skate with Phil Taylor. I have photos of them together. Sid also joined the Canadian Army. They seemed to have had a double act on ice, which they performed away from competitions, in theatres across England. Sid had a colourful career, including skating on stilts and barrel jumping, instructing in Switzerland, and at Streatham Ice Rink where he was floor manager when it opened in the 30s.

Hi Pamela,  I have done a lot of research on Phil Taylor, but would love to know more about his father's marriage to Nellie nee Payne.  Phil's father is closely related to us, so we're interested in all his descendants.  As you've only made one post so far, I can't private message you.  After we've chatted a couple of times on this forum, I can give you my email address and can then share research with you.  So a few dates and names for Nellie would be good, and anything you know about their marriage.  Look forward to hearing from you again, Regards, Meredith
