Could anyone please estimate the age of Cissie Layton please she was a Band of Hope May Queen in 1921 in Hull. I have a suitcase full of Band of Hope photographs of May Queens dated between 1910 -1938 who I am trying to find Family for prior to them going on display.
Thanks for looking.

Complete guess - 20
Have you looked for a birth for her on freebmd?
-
Perhaps a little older 21, she has no wedding ring but is wearing a splendid watch maybe a 21st Birthday present?
Lovely photo
Sarah :)

Thanks for that Liz...yes...several times but nothing seems to match :-\

I'm saying between 18 and 22 -
Oh to have such a smooth skin with no wrinkles :)

Thanks Sarah....all ideas welcome...there is a beautiful enlarged version of this one too and someone would dearly love to give her a home I'm sure.
Thanks Gadget...me too....I would have said early 20s too...I'm sure you would have a similar complexion at this age too ;D

That was exactly what went through my mind!
Might be worth a closer look at
Jul/Aug/Sep 1899
Hunslet ref 9b 277
Cissie Lawton
No cancel that - she died the same year age 0
But I will post anyway, so we can rule that one out.
-
Okay thanks for looking Liz...It's much appreciated...I also tried looking for Cecilia...Cecily and Frances...but it could bear no resemblance to her real name or it could have been her middle name :-\
Maybe someone will pick up this thread if they are looking for her on Google.

Wondering about Cissie - I have two in my family - one was really a Cecil (middle name) and the other was a Cecily. You could try Cecilia or Priscilla or .....
(same ideas, Carol - will check on another site - whatsinanaeme )

My husbands great aunt was always called Aunt Cis/Cissie , but when I found her details , turned out her name was Sarah Ann !

Thanks Gadget....and Jan...oh dear......I feared as much ::) exploring all possibilities and widening the search....looking for Laytons in 1911 for Hull and the one female I feel might fit...her name bears no resemblance to Cissie ::)

Been looking on the 'net' and some info says that Cissie/Cis , could be a pet/nickname for the eldest / youngest sister of the family ........... as in my husbands case of Aunt Cis , she was the eldest daughter . My husband calls his sister 'Sis' her name being Sandra !
Is there a marriage for a Cissie/Cissy Layton , likewise a death , ? Sometimes obits can give clues too
-
Anything in a local newspaper when she was crowned May Queen? Might say more about her?
-
Lots of hits for her on
http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results?basicsearch=%22cissie%20layton%22
I havent got a sub, so cant see details
But looks like she could sing, and an Ivy Layton is mentioned too
-
1911 appears to have an Ivy Layton in Hull
-
Publication Hull Daily Mail Monday 05 March 1928
Pupils concert given by Ivy Layton and her pupils in aid of Hull Infirmary The pupils combined well in various dances, and those contributing solo efforts were(included) the Misses Ivy and Cissie Layton

A portion of the same photo is in the Hull Daily Mail - Saturday 23 April 1921.
It doesn't say much:
"Miss Cissie Layton, who is well known as a member of the Ebenezer P.M choir, and also as a member of the Lily of the Valley Lodge of the Sons of Temperance. She is an ardent worker in the temperance movement and in the church, and is thus following in the train of her parents."
-
I too had a look through the newspapers.
25/12/1896 Chelmsford.
She (Cissie Layton) was a bridesmaid along with Florence Winterflood (both cousins of the bride) at the marriage of William Crabb & Gertrude Mary Layton who was the daughter of Robert Layton. This was at Moulsham, Essex.
21/4/1921. Hull daily Mail.
It seems that she took over the duties of the elected May Queen (her father had died) & she was a member of the Ebenezer PM Choir & a member of The Lily of the Valley Lodge of the sons of Temperence.
She might have been born in Essex & she might have been a child at the wedding of her cousin. She's always refered to as Cissie. So a birth before 1896 (providing she's the same Cissie Layton)

I had an aunt called "Sis". She was an only girl, with four brothers. Short for sister, her real name was Bridget.
-
Wow....you have all been busy whilst I have preparing the evening meal...Thank you all so much...I will certainly follow up what you have all found especially the newspaper info.
I can't thank you enough :-* :-* :-*
I hope to make someone's day very soon :D

Hoping to find Cissie through this marriage.
Found a Gertrude Mary Layton birth, Q1 1873 Hull & a Gertrude Mary Layton, Q2 1877, Chelmsford
::) Both need chasing up but it'll have to be tomorrow for me :(

Finding Gertrude on a census after her marriage to Crabb shows her to be the Chelmsford birth.
The Gertrude bn Chelmsford has a Dad called Robert in earlier censuses.
Tracing him back , here he is in 1861:
RG 9 1079 169 24
(Shout if you need full transcriptions)
One of Roberts brothers on that census is a Richard
If you look at Richard in 1901 at RG13 1672 29 19 you see he has numerous children including a 28 yr old Cessy.
This must be the one who was bridesmaid at her cousins wedding.
But I think she would be too old to be the Cissy in the photo 20 years later.
This is probably her birth - Ap/Ma/Jun 1872 Chelmsford - Mary Cecilia Layton
So I would reckon we can rule out the Chelmsford newspaper references.
Fiddling with 1911 there is an Ivy Layton in Hull, also in the house a Margaret Alice - wonder if she is Cissy?
-
Thank you Jane for your valued searches....It's greatly helped :-*
Liz...That's the one that I had earmarked in 1911 Margaret Alice 8)
Will look at FindMyPast newspapers for the Hull Daily mail entry :D
The power of Rootschat and it's helpful members is second to none!!!
You have all been brilliant and I thank you all.

What is the date of the photo? Maybe alert Jim or China.
Has it got a backing, Carol?
-
Hi Gadget...the back is plain...she was May Queen in 1921 and this is written on the back.
Thanks for responding.

How about an Alice Lawton, b.c. 1902, Hull. the Margaret Alice seems to be a bit too old.
-
Carol
Re the clip that Sami has found - the same report mentions 'recitals by Miss Ivy Layton', so it looks very promising that it could well be Margaret Alice.
Add - Also a report of a Temperance Rally which mentions 'the Sisters Layton and Gleadhill .' and further on, Ivy is mentioned by name. 29 June 1921
So Ivy was definitely in the Temperance movement.
-
Thanks for that Gadget...I see on Yorkshirebmd that Ivy was born 1893 and Margaret Alice born 1896 so I believe this could well be the right Family.
So pleased with the effort that has gone into to this...I'm really grateful as there are about 20 of these May Queens needing homes.

Ivy Annie Layton spinster is mentioned in her stepmothers probate , in 1951 stepmother is Amelia Charlotte Layton others mentioned are Henry her widower and a Henry Arthur Layton , no mention of Margaret Alice , Henry snr married an Amelia Charlotte Chapman in Sept Q 1901 Hampshire
-
I think you could be on the right track with the name Alice, I have an Alice in my tree, she was always known as Cissie (and she was not the eldest or youngest)
-
Aw thanks for that Jan...well spotted....I will check things out tomorrow.
Thanks so much for your help.

There's a marriage for a Margaret A Layton to Laurence C Edwards
Jun q, 1935 Sculcoates.
So maybe living descendants, Carol.
Gadget
(And a possible death for her in 1971, Haslingden, with a date of birth given as 16 June 1899 )
-
Hi Gadget...That is a real possibility...I can see children for a Layton/Edwards union but they are in Birmingham and the age that she would have been makes it unlikely but not impossible.
There are several articles in the HDM for Cissie and Ivy Layton and also other May Queens for whom I have photos but no ages or personal information but interesting all the same and I can use the cuttings and put them with the photos. There doesn't seem to be a matching tree on Ancestry unfortunately ::)
Thanks again.

I found a bit more about Laurence*. From memory he was b.c. 1907 Sculcoates. Died in Birmingham area in 1994. She was a wee bit older than him I couldn't find definite children. Would have to have been born before circa 1950!
I couldn't find a marriage announcement but not sure if all the newspapers are up for that late a date.
* C was for Carlton
-
Thanks for that Gadget....I will do a bit more digging and look at Birmingham newspaper obits.

Update: A gentleman rang the Heritage Centre where I am a volunteer, and asked whether we had any information on The Band of Hope May Queens as one of his relatives; Margaret Alice Layton was one and he wondered whether there was any photographs of her. After spending time with him on the phone, I was able to email him copies of three photographs and several newspaper cuttings, then I posted the originals to him as he lived some distance away. He was one very happy man ;D ;D
She was 25 years old in the photo.
Thank you all :-*

Aw - isn't it nice to have a lovely ending.
Thanks, Carol, for letting us know :)
