Title: Aughaderry Smyth and Duffy families
Post by: Stoodly on Sunday 23 March 14 06:14 GMT (UK)
Greetings, I am trying to find out more about Julia Duffy and Patrick "Pat" Smyth who are listed in Aughaderry "Aghaderry" on the 1911 census. Julia's mother Anne is listed there too.

Hoping to find Julia and Pat's parents names, and further children that we know were born to Julia and Pat.

Ancestry is not giving me any further info.

Thanks for your help.

This is a possible candidate for the marriage, if you want to order it up:

Is this the 1901 census record for Julia?

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Roscommon/Loughglynn/Aghaderry/1662481/

Based on this information, the nearest I can suggest for parents by playing around with the search index on the  RootsIreland website are a John Duffy (father Patrick) and Anne Noone (father John), who married in 1878 in Castlerea RC parish (the area given in the civil record is Ballinlough), the RootsIreland index also brings back baptism and civil birth records against these parents for children including Patrick 1881 and Julia 1883 (birth area recorded for each as Ballaghadreen, the baptisms against Loughlynn RC parish). As always, the actual record content is pay to view.

But this is no more than speculative stuff, only just worth noting.  My advice would be to wait for something more substantive that someone might find and post here (fingers crossed).

Failing that, you could order up and work back from the civil marriage record for Pat Smyth and Julia Duffy.

Hi Gaffy, thanks for your swift response. And yes, I had seen Julia and her bro Patrick with Mother Anne on the 1901 and thought it could be a good fit as her birth date also matches with the 1911 census.

I'll take your advice and see if anyone else here can throw any light on this family........and then look at ordering the marriage record.

With kind regards

Hello Stoodly,

Civil registration for life events was organised into Superindent Register Districts commonly referred to as Civil Parishes by the principle sites LDS, Ancestry and FindMyPast. These SRD’s were further broken down into smaller units known as Dispensary Districts, and only Rootsireland at the moment use the smaller districts in their datasets.

Ballaghaderren (CP) was a dispensary District of Castlereagh, Roscommon, so there should be no confusion over records found on the main search sites. Loughglynn/Lisacul Catholic Parish was one of a number of Catholic Parishes which were covered by the Ballaghaderreen (CP).

Ballinlough(CP) just south west of Loughglynn would be another Dispensary District of Castlereagh, Roscommon. The marriage record should be obtained to clarify from the townland details contained within to ensure it is the Duffy family from Aughaderry . There were a number of Noone families in the Loughglynn/Lisacul Parish prior to the marriage and the townland details for Anne should help determine her lineage.

The Griffith Valuation for the townalnd Aughaderry in 1857 has a Patrick Duffy noted as leasing land. - http://bit.ly/1gND2kl

Some  additional  records of note. A birth of an Elizabeth Duffy in 1885 who though not on the 1901 census appears as a church baptism in Loughglynn though no Civil record appears on any database.

John Duffy would appear to have died between 1884 and 1901 and two death records which appear as Castlereagh,Ireland on the main sites are shown as Ballaghaderreen (CP) on Rooots Ireland and are worth a closer look :-

JOHN 1900 Parish: BALLAGHADREEN (CP)
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FT66-2JH
JOHN 1893 Parish: BALLAGHADREEN (CP)
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTZS-QTP

Parish records for Loughglynn do go back to the early1800’s but do have several pages missing. You may also see pre 1864 records on LDS which seem similar to those of Loughglynn which show an event place of Tibohine. These are taken from the same microfilm and in their wisdom LDS created a record set for the historic pre 1864 Civil Parish of Tibohine which Loughglynn was one of three Catholic parishes that it covered.

Good Luck

Hello Dianna,

You shouldn't have any problems.

As an early Easter treat you might enjoy the clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdAAjqSgs5c#t=26, which will have scenes your ancestors will have been familiar with, if not even part of the cast.

Well that was quick work Irish Registry! Marriage certificate arrived in Aus today!

Pat Smyth and Julia Duffy were wed on 13.3.1906.

Pat is listed as a farmer living in Castlerea at time of marriage, of age, and father Hugh Smyth a farmer too.

Julia Duffy is listed also as a farmer living in Aughaderry at time of marriage, of age, and father John Duffy a farmer.

Married at the RC chapel at Loughglynn by Canon White.

Any further pointers gratefully appreciated.

Regards

Diana

Hello Diana,

To identify which John Duffy was married to Anne Noone it will be necessary to confirm the last residence of John which will be on the certificate (Aghaderry) from which an estimated age hopefully will lead to identifying the Patrick Duffy , of which there were many in Loughglynn who was his father. A word of warning the online parish records do not appear to include the father’s name so it may require sourcing the LDS microfilm and viewing at a regional centre

John Duffy deaths Ballaghaderreen dispensary district of Castlereagh, Roscommon

1881 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FT9B-TJ8  aged 21
1884 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTQF-LJ7 aged 26
1887 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FT49-T4C aged 67
1892 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTC8-13N aged 33
1893 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTZS-QTP  aged 73
1900 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FT66-2JH  aged 63

Some of the above options will stand out as unlikely and you may have to select two or three to hedge your bets. You can go online to http://roscommon.rootsireland.ie/ and view a transcribed copy or apply as you have previously and have them sourced through GRO.

Thanks again Padraig3, I am going away for 10 days but will get onto this on my return. I think I have narrowed the field to John Duffy died 1892?
