My nan's brother James Norman Baines moved from Liverpool to London around 1911.
My nan always talked about him being high up within Dewhursts. I note that the Vestey brothers took
Dewhurst's over.
Any suggestions /ideas how I could find out what position with in the organisation he had?

Hi
goggling J H Dewhurst brings up loads of stuff eg this
http://paintedsignsandmosaics.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/dewhurst-forest-hill.html
I don't know whether that type of record, if it does survive, would be in the public domain.
As the company originated in Southport, ypou could try archives in that area to see if they can help or point you in another direction.

There's a site for Southport family history online that may well be useful - I think I got there via "North Meols Family History Society" and they have a free forum online that, whilst not wildly active, has very good, well-informed members who do seem to check that any information they give, or sources that they suggest, are accurate. I'd give them a try.

Thank you Saltpot.
I think he was high up in the company. He use to help his sister out (my nan) with money. I think he help my nan finance her to buy her home as her husband died in 1932, leaving my nan to bring up 3 children. My nan when a teenager had to give up her job to act as mum to her siblings when her parents died. I think Norman always appreciated what she did for him and her siblings and hence he sent her money.
I need to research more on Norman. I know when he married / died and need to look into his wife's side and children. Time consuming but interesting. Am still working on my Welsh grandfathers side and will be back to North Wales to follow up leads.
Kind regards
Pauline.

Just spotted this Litherland Lass, If your relative came to London in 1911 it was for Vestey or one of the co,s he took over, J H Dewhurst was not acquired until 1923 & only 2 shops & a market stall,

Hi Saltpot,
Thank you for this info. I can now check with his marriage lines.
If you come across anymore info no matter how small please feel free to pass on.
I haven't had much success with my nan's siblings. But am sure something will turn up one day.
Regards

Scouring the internet Litherland lass i came across my roots chat post re Norman (james) Baines,
At the time i could do no more at the time,
Since then the 1939 register has been released & Norman (James) Baines 1887 is living in East Barnet Hertfordshire, with Margaret 1893 & Pauline 1921
Moderator comment: edited for content, certain 1939 details removed
