Title: Bernard Ryan. executed 1921
Post by: dc51 on Wednesday 09 April 14 22:19 BST (UK)
Bernard Ryan was one of 10 men executed in mountjoy prison 1921.
He was a friend of my grandparents. I would like to contact anyone connected to him, relative or otherwise. His wike page seems inaccurate to me.

This I believe is his 1911 census

May i ask why that census return as there are 2 other Bernard Ryans of similar age or younger, Glasnevin shows his burial as age 20, his father could still have been alive in 1911 but possibly deceased by 1921 ,is there something further that you know that is leading you to that address, there is no obvious birth in Dublin circa 1901 could he be from another county.

Link to 1901 census to which dathai refers (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003779476/)
which does look like the same family as posted by dc51 in 1911

When Bernard was arrested he gave his address as 8 Royal Canal Terrace, Phibsborough
and next of kin as his mother Anne; he is shown as born in Dublin and aged 20

My Grandmother Mary Kennedy was married from 4 Royal Canal Terrace in 1922 so perhaps she knew Bertie and family.
upon searching for her mother also Mary Kennedy on the 1939 Register of Electors i found what i believe to be her at 4 Phibsborough Road cant find any Royal Canal Terrace 1939.
Similarly i found Sarah Ryan at 8 Phibsborough Road 1939 listed with others same address
Patrick and Agnes Kelly and Patrick Sullivan.

That's right for Sarah. according to my mother she didn't marry but took in orphaned or homeless children. One of them had the name Sullivan. Just like her mother??
Were any of your grandmothers family involved in the war 1920 if so they would indeed have known Bertie. My grandmother was grew up in 188 Phibsborough rd. It was a busy house at that time.

As far as i know the Kennedy clan were not involved them being builders supposedly being responsible for a lot of the cinemas in Dublin whereas my grandfather Whelan who married Mary Kennedy to quote my fathers sister had a terrible abhorrance towards the I R A.
Recently on here i got the devastating news from a fellow rootschatter that his family line that i had spent years researching was wrong i think he used someone else's birth cert on his first marriage and that man never left Wexford so he could'nt be my grandfather.
Not being able to trace his family i dont know if he had brothers involved or such like but it may have had something to do with the 1913 lockout as he was a tram driver and would have gone through hard times during this period.

In 1868 O'Donovan Rossa wrote A Lament for Edward Duffy,to me it is one of the most poignant poems i have ever read as i could actually visualise what he was saying because of the way he wrote it.
I would like to dedicate it to all people like Bernard (Bertie) Ryan and all who died in the cause of Irish Freedom.
Unfortunately i am unable to perform the link and was hopeing some kind soul would do it for me.
found by googling'' NGA.ie Graves Fenians Edward Duffy.''

thank you
Dathai.

Your link as requested! (http://www.nga.ie/Fenians-Duffy_Edward.php)

When you have an internet page open
Look at the top of your screen where there is an address box
The address of the page will be there for e.g. http://www.nga.ie or similar
If you point your cursor at the address and left click once it will be highlighted
While highlighted, press the buttons [ctrl] and [c] on your keyboard at the same time
Then go back to the tab where you are replying to the topic and press the buttons [ctrl] and [v] on your keyboard at the same time where you want the link to be within your text
This will paste the address of the page as a link and be coloured blue

There is a nice way of tidying up but that's lesson two!

Hi, I just came across this site now. My grandparents were Agnes and Patrick Kelly, and Paddy Sullivan was my great uncle. My nan and Uncle Paddy were reared by Sarah Ryan. They lived in 8 Royal Canal Terrace and my mother and her sister were born there. Aunt Sarah as she was affectionately known was Godmother to my mother.

My mother was one of the "orphaned/fostered" children living at 8 Royal Canal Terrace in 1936. She was committed to an Industrial School from there. Two other children also went to Court with her on the same day - their names were Joan and Anthony Kelly. My mum's name was Mary Philomena Roddy. This ring any bells with anyone?

I have been given a huge file pertaining to the execution of Bernard Ryan and the others. It includes letters of support written to Sarah Ryan before and after the execution. Also letters from Bernard to his mother and press reports. I am happy to share information as it was shared with me. I also have a family connection with Nurse Ryan (as she was known).

Daughter Kate may have married John McDonagh 1st July 1919 Dn North

Anne and other people like her were wonderful people to take on orphaned children in the days before Social Welfare without proper financial support.
I hope she does'nt lie in an unmarked grave as she deserves her own little memorial to her hard life, God bless her.

Anne  Ryan did not take in orphaned children; it was her daughter Sarah who did that. They were not orphaned in the sense that we understand - they were unwanted, or seperated from their mothers and then boarded out. A lady in USA was commissioned by the Sisters of Mercy to collate records from these types of homes. She produced lists, photos and records for most of the children who passed through this system. I have met one or two of them. However, the records only show what could be shown.
During my research, I was told of a rumour where someone believed that Bernard Ryan could have been the illegitimate child of Sarah Ryan and that he was passed off as Anne Ryan's child. This may explain the lack of any birth records. I must stress that it was one person's opinion.
I also have a newspaper cutting from a paper in New Zealand where it reports that Sarah Ryan was involved in the abduction of a child which was found hidden at 8 Royal Canal Terrace. Whilst this seems incredible, the paper seems to know quite a bit about her.
So there are quite a few mysteries surrounding the Ryans. The files I have depict them as highly thought of and well-respected in the community. Ann Ryan received many tributes and letters of support from high places and was given very sympathetic press coverage when Bernard was convicted.

Hello Dee.
I haven't been here in a long time. Kind'a lost touch.
Bertie (Bernard) was a close friend of my grandparents. According to my mother, he may have been, what she called, a foundling. an abandoned or orphaned child.
this is what I think is the family in 1911

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Glasnevin/Quarry_Lane/14733/

This may be the family in 1901. The ages don't add up, but that's not unusual.

Let me know what you think.

Yes dc51 that is definitely them. On the 1901 census, can you read what the daughters' occupation is?

Also on the 1911 census, are they neighbours with Thomas McGuinness?

Finding it quite hard to read.

Sarah must have been involved in "boarding out". My mother's address was 8 Royal Canal Terrace in 1936  when she was committed to Industrial School by the Courts.

I think maybe the Ryan's flew under the radar.

Hi Dee.
I don't know who Thomas McGuinness was. But I do remember when I was a child in the 60s, my mother used to take us to visit someone on royal Canal Terrace. (That's behind the stone wall near broadstone ?) They had a boxer dog!

From what I can see, Sarah was a house keeper and Kate was a dressmaker.
Regards.

I have just come across the address of "8 Royal Canal Terrace, Phibsboro" from Child Court records dated 1934.

It doesn't say whose address this was, but the child in the court records was taken from them and placed in an Industrial School.

Fascinating stuff to read all of your posts and to realise that many other children were connected to this address.

Kind regards,
Glen
