Title: Ckeck on USA in-coming passenger lists
Post by: dfra on Thursday 15 July 04 03:39 BST (UK)
Good moring,
Hoping someone would be kind enough to check the USA passenger lists for
Joseph SOUTHWELL born 1821 Cambridgeshire, UK, married in 1851 to Jane MORTAR/MORER in Ohio, USA.
Apprears next on 1855 cenus of Lodi, Wisconsin, Columbia County, USA
Also:
His parents and sister: Robert & Betty (Elizabeth) SOUTHWELL and Sarah SOUTHWELL all followed Joseph to USA.
Robert born 1798 Cambs, UK; Betty born (?), Sarah born 1834 Cambs, UK.                                                                                                       (They  last appear on the 1851 census of Cambs, then appear on the 1860 Wisconsin USA census)

Any help - most appreciated,
Cheers
Deb Francis

I went on to the Ellis Island website and managed to find the entry for when my great uncle went to America in 1907. You can get a copy of the ship's manifesto showing the entry if you are lucky enough to find it. Web site address is www.ellisislandrecords.org/search. Best of luck.

Hi Tresa
Unfortunately, I have had no luck in finding either Joseph or Jane on any passenger lists to which I have access.

The 1860 US census states that their daughter Mary (10), and their son Charles (8) were born in NY, so that helps verify the dates you have.

Incidentally, the family moved to Nebraska by the 1870 census.  I was hoping to find 1900 census for Joseph (stretching it..I know  :))which would have provided an arrival date, though not always correctly entered but not there.

I checked the 1885 Nebraska State census, and neither parents were on it, though several of their children, with their families were.

Anyhow, I am sorry I could not help with the arrival date, but if you need any further details on the above, please let me know.

Regards,
Valerie

Hi Valerie,  ;)
Thanks for all your efforts -  Re the 1860 census (as below) I have Mary Jane Southwell born circa 1852 and Robert Charles Southwell born 1853 in Ohio. so seems to be about right.  Are there any more children mentioned as I have William, Thomas, Sarah, Milton & Carrie listed as siblings to Mary & Robert.

:-*If possible could you send the details of the Southwell family on the 1870 Nebraska census and the 1885 Nebraska State Census - chilren and their families?

Many thanks

Sarah, 12, Wisc.
Son, 10, Wisc. (I could not make the name out, very bad).

Hi Deb
The 1860 Wisconsin census, which I think you already have, shows:
Joseph 38, b England
Jane, 35, b England
Mary, 10, b NY
Charles 8, b NY
Thomas 6, b WI
William, 4, b WI
Sarah 3, b WI

Hoka has kindly provided you with the 1870.  I believe the sons name that could not be read is Miles.

I'll post further with 1885 Nebraska state census.

Regards,
Valerie

Hi

1885 Nebraska State Census does not provide an image, so I stayed within Burt County.

Southwell
S.A. (Sarah?), 24, b Wisconsin, living Village of Decatur, Burt Cty.
It does not indicate that she was living with other family members.

Wilson, 2, born Wisconsin
Carrie, 16, b Nebraska...living Everett Precinct, Burt

William, 34, b Okesernsm (sic) perhaps this is Oshkosh.
Mary 50 b Iowa
Eva 3, b Nebraska
Selia, 4, b Nebraska

Hope this helps
Valerie
All living in Village of Oakland, Burt, Nebraska

Dear Deb, I have checked the Ellis Island site and find that you can only search from 1892 onwards. I found a relative who had sailed in 1907. From what you say, Joseph Southwell must have emigrated some time between 1821 when he was born and 1851when he married in USA. Sorry I can't help but get back to me if there is anything else I can try for you.

I just found a book, "History of Burt Co. Nebraska" 1803 to 1929, Wahoo, Nebraska, Ludi Print Co. 1929, 281 pages.

Just a sample from it.

Milon Southwell was born in Columbia Co. Wisconsin on March 4, 1864, the son of Joseph and Jane (Morter) Southwell.

Milon Southwell was born March 23, 1902, the son of Milon Southwell and Clara Walter.

Milon graduated in 1919 from Lyons High School.

In all the emails, I forgot to tell you that in 1909 the Southwell's in Nebraska, packed up and moved to Alberta Canada. I think Alberta has the 1906 as well as the 1901 census posted, I lost your address, thought we were done, sorry.
