Hi,
Can anybody help find this person on the 1871 and 1881 census.
She was born in South Shields around 1862 (probably December quarter - as just Charlotte Mouat) and married William Williamson in Sunderland on the 26th May 1881.
Can't find any trace of her prior to her marriage at all!!
Thanks
Sue

What information does the marriage give for her father.
-
1871 Census ref RG10 5002 63 41
There's a Charlott Monat, age 8, in County Durham, parents Joseph and Sarah.
However, looking at the original image I would say it's Mouat

The family is transcribed as Movet in 1881 on Ancestry, no sign of Charlotte though
RG11; Piece: 4986; Folio: 140; Page: 66

Sue, they sound like Shetlanders, South Shields & Sunderland would also be right, many of them settled in the east coast ports.
Skoosh.
-
Joseph Mouat, the father, was born in Scotland.

This is a variant of the name Mowat from Caithness. If he is a Shetlander the superb website
http://www.bayanne might help, if he's an Orcadian http://www.cursiter.com
Skoosh.

A marriage for a Joseph Mouat in South Shields, June q 1861 - 10a 730
Sarah Kane is on the same page.

Only one baptism showing in Scotland for a Joseph Mo*at circa 1840:
4 Nov 1840 Hoy and Graemsay, Orkney: Joseph Mowat. Parents - Joseph Mowat and Margrat Ritch
Fits with Skoosh's info.

1841 Census

In the census that cannot be mentioned, he gives his place of birth as Edinburgh.

Nothing showing in the baptisms for Edinburgh so far.
There's a Joseph Mowat in Leith in 1841. Parents possibly Daniel* (45 - Cork cutter, journeyman) and Harriet (34)
The 1861 marriage cert might be the only way of finding his parents for certain.

Added - I think he's transcribed as David T in 1851 (wife is now Christian)

Hi All,
Sorry for the delay in responding - but I would like to thank all of you for helping so much in identifying Charlotte's parents!

Mouat seems to be relatively numerous in South Shields and Sunderland. Charlotte's marriage 1881 is on familysearch.org Index only so that does not give much more information you did not already know. Durham Records online has a good selection too.

The Joseph Mowat born 1840 on Graemsay died in 1866 when attempting to rescue people from the "Reaper"

Hi there,
I was just googling around the web and found this old thread.
I have been trying to find details for Joseph Mouat born c.1840 in Edinburgh, d. 1919 in Sunderland aged 79. He is my husband's great great grandfather. I too was thinking that he must have been born in Orkney to Joseph Mouat and Margrat Ritch but I see from the post above that this gentleman died, rather heroically and tragically it seems.
I think that the Leith-born person is more likely to be him.
Sue - did you ever find an 1861 marriage certificate? I would be very interested in any information.
My husband's great grandmother was Joseph's daughter Julia Mouat (later Elders) who gave birth to a my husband's grandfather George Frederick Paxton Mouat – b 1894 d 1974. He was illegitimate and brought up alongside his step-brothers and sisters in the Elders family in Sunderland. This has always been shrouded in mystery for my husband's family. From my research I suspect that the father was a Frederick Paxton who lived around the corner from Julia in the eye infirmary in Sunderland and was close in age when George was born (c.18/19). He is listed as a mariner.
