Title: Desperately Seeking the Neilsons....
Post by: alllegs on Friday 24 June 05 11:53 BST (UK)
Hi everyone,

I wondered if anyone could help me with my Neilson family...

I don't really have much to go on but I thought I'd post a message anyway.

Thomas Neilson married Jane Walker on October 18th 1897 in Stokesley, Yorks.  Their 1st son also Thomas was born on December 26th 1898 in Cornsilloch, Dalserf.  Jane was from Yorks and ther other children were all born in Crook, Durham.

All census state that Thomas Neilson (senior) was born in Scotland but there is no specific town.

I assume that the family were from Dalserf as Thomas (junior) was born there and my grandfather remembers going there as a child to visit aunts and uncles.

Granddad specifically remembers an Aunt Bett and an Uncle Archie who he thinks were either Thomas' brother and sister or sister and brother in law.

At some point Thomas went to South Africa to the gold mines. He was originally a coal miner but then took over the Prince of Wales Public House in Crook, Durham.  He (according to my granddad) died aged 39.  I don't have any record of this though.

Thank you in anticipation.

Thank you Audrey,

Thank you for looking that up for me, I think that is too early to be this Thomas Neilson but he would have been about 60 when he married and my Thomas only lived to be 39!!
I suppose it could be his father perhaps.

Were there any references to an Elizabeth (Bett) or Archie at all?

Thank you again

The earlier 1851 Index has a 7 yr old Archibald Neilson born Dalserf living with his parents and there are several Elizabeth's (not associated with the same family)

Unfortunately without further information these could just be a wild goose chase.

Hi Falkyrn,

Thank you for looking that up for me, would it be possible to have the details from the 1851 as some of the names may ring a bell with my Granddad.

I think this Archibald may be a bit early though as Granddad remembers walking the moors with Uncle Archie in the early 1930's.

Thank you again

Thank you again Falryrn,

Thats great!!  I assume they are the only Neilson's listed on the 1851 in Dalserf?  What do the numbers after the names mean? (I realise that the number within the words is the persons age, but what are the ones after Dalserf?)  Also are these Nelisons all from the same family or a they just a list of individuals?

I will have to find the 1861 and 1871 I think before I can link my lot to any of those.

Ta muchly

I do not have information on the Thomas Neilson that you requested.  However, Falkyrn has identified the family that I would like information about,  i.e. Twins James and Robert Neilson born to Thomas Neilson and Mary Stuart on September 23, 1940 in Dalserf, Scotland. I have hit a brick wall when it comes to learning who Thomas' and Mary's parents are.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

I assume that you mean 1840 not 1940?

They are at Gowan Glen, Larkhall, Dalserf in 1841: Thomas Neilson, 30, carter; Mary, 30; Thomas, 6; John, 4; William, 2; James and Robert, 8 months. All except Thomas born in Lanarkshire.

In 1851 they are in Westquarter, Glassford: Mary Neilson, wife, 39, weaver's wife; Thomas, son, 16, hand loom weaver; William, 12, hand loom weaver; James and Robert, 10; Janet, 7; Isabella, 5. All born in Dalserf except Thomas and William, who were born in Kirkintilloch.

No listing of Thomas with the family in 1851, but also in Westquarter village are Thomas Neilson, 40, hand loom weaver; wife Christian, 40; and stepdaughters Margaret, Christian, Bethia and Janet Ballantine. This Thomas doesn't quite fit the one in 1841, because he was born in Glassford, which is in Lanarkshire, but I have so far failed to find any record of a marriage or of the baptisms of the Ballantine girls, and I am wondering if perhaps Mary's husband has deserted her and set up home with Christian instead?

The 1861 census has yet to be transcribed by FreeCEN, but if I were you I think my next step would be to look for Mary in the 1861 census, to see whether she is with Thomas and, if not, how she is described (wife or widow?). However I don't see a death of a Mary Neilson, other surname Stuart, in the SP index, so she could have emigrated or died between 1851 and 1854.

I don't see a likely baptism of Mary Stuart in Dalserf around 1811/1812, however.

Thank you Forfarian.  You are correct it should read 1840.  The information is great and I will follow your advise.
