Title: Hawkeys Cafe on Cleethorpes Promenade.....
Post by: diana2646 on Thursday 17 April 14 13:03 BST (UK)
Hi, does anyone know where I can access old photos of Hawkey's Cafe on Cleethorpes sea front.  My mother in law was a Hawkey before she was married and was part owner of it.  She used to work in the cafe also, many years ago now, in the summer. She told me a story a long time ago now, about when her father was in charge, if he could see just one person walking down the promenade, he wouldn't close up, incase he lost a customer.

If you Google Hawkeys Café Cleethorpes, and follow the fourth link (Grimsby & Cleethorpes History Club), there's a photo of the café there.

Hi, hope it brought back some good memories!  I found the picture that STG told me about and I also found another pic of the front of Hawkeys on the prom, which was on a facebook site called 80s - 90s hangouts, which someone told me about.  I could send you them if you wanted them, if you PM'd me your email address.

Hi, my great grandfather was John Hawkey.  I have been researching the family tree for some years now and would love to talk with anyone who would like to share information on the family.  I also have photos of the old cafes.

Hi, allthough I cant help you in your search, I do remember the cafes on the Cleethorps Prom and at Riby Square Cleethorpes Road, as I said above ..2 of my sisters worked for the Hawkey family.

My sister is now in her 80's and we live a long way from each other, but I have spoken on the telephone and told her about this thread, and she remembers Violet and Eric Hawkey but that is all.

I would appreciate having the photos you have....I did get some from the lady who put another post on here, and they were great to see.

Many thanks

Happy to email the photos.  I am not really up to speed on using this site, are you able to give me your email address?  Or do I send the photos through this site?

My Mum Sue (who is now 63.5 years old), worked for Mr and Mrs Hawkey at Hawley's cafe 50 years ago, when she was 13.5 years old, for two seasons. Approximately 5 weeks ago, out of the blue, she found halfway down her driveway a business card - on the front a picture was a picture of blue and lilac flowers, and written on the back:
With the compliments of Hawkeys LTD, Tel 62642. The Capitol Cafe, Accommodation 600. The Premier Cafe, 200. North Prom, Cleethorpes. Estd Over 50 years. Quick service, Civility, and the Best of Everything As you Like It! Food cooked to a Nicety.

My Mum found it strange that after 50 years, this card should land on her property, when there are 230 houses on her road. Is anyone from this thread still here?

Hi I just received a message that you had posted. Gosh isn't that strange that the card should just appear. John and Edna Hawkey are my great grandparents. I believe I have a photo of the front of the card but had no idea what was on the back. I live inTasmania, Australia and would be most grateful if you are able to give me any information on them. If you are able to scan the card for me that would be great. Sorry I can't help with the mystery card but I'm certainly glad it turned up.
Cheers Pauline

Hi, thank you for replying, great to hear from you. I have a photograph of the front and back of the card, I'd be pleased to send it to you if you can send your email in a private message to me? My Mum has some memories of her time working for Mr and Mrs Hawkey, I can share by email too.
Best wishes
