Title: Edinburgh workhouse records
Post by: Perkymite on Tuesday 22 April 14 09:10 BST (UK)
Does anybody know how to research the Workhouse records for Edinburgh?   I had three uncles in there, name Marriott, apparently in the 1911 census.  But it does not seem to show on Scotland's people!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers Perky

Have you found them at all in the 1911 census? Poorhouse, rather than workhouse, will be the term but you will probably just find an address, not poorhouse as such.

There were two main poorhouses in Edinburgh at the time of the 1911 census, Craiglockhart (Edinburgh City) Poorhouse and Craigleith - see http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Edinburgh/ for more information. There was also the Royal Infirmary where the sick who could no longer be looked after at home might be sent too - this was pre NHS days.  There may be some relevant materials in Edinburgh City Archives - Kirsty Wilkinson's pages give details of surviving Poor Relief records http://www.myainfolk.com/Resources_files/Records_of_the_Scottish_Poor.pdf If you look under Midlothian you will see the Edinburgh resources but there is probably not very much at all for the period you are interested in.  Hope this helps.

The term in Scotland is Poor House not workhouse. Edinburgh City Archives is the place to start. http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20032/access_to_information/600/edinburgh_city_archives

From what I have read in the past, the Midlothian records of poor relief applications are very scant. Think in the main, they were thrown out/destroyed many years ago.

Have a look at page 28 here www.myainfolk.com/Resources_files/Records_of_the_Scottish_Poor.pdf which provides a good summary of archives and locations available in the Midlothian area and else where in Scotland.

Could this be the missing three?     All be it one is listed as Marshall or is it a James you are looking for who was with his aunt in Hawick?
