I am trying to find any family of Sgt Nicholas William Cantwell RAF aged 21 died on 20/09/1940 son of Thomas and Bridget Cantwell from Galway Irish Republic. He is buried in my local church cemetery
any help would be appreciated.
-
Possibly born Nicholas William Cantwell July Sep 1919 Galway vol 4 page 165.
-
C W G C shows his burial under above name in Benson(St Helen) churchyard.
-
Thanks for your help , I am trying to trace all the men buried there who came here from other countries and never made it home.
-
His parents seem to be Thomas Cantwell and Bridget Birkett married 1916 in Galway however going back five years to 1911 there seems to be only one Thomas Cantwell in Galway born in New York age 5 so too young for marriage in 1916 while there are two Bridget Birketts in Dublin one age 5 and one 15 which would be 20 in 1916 ,i wonder could Thomas have been a soldier too.
-
Looks like they had eleven children up till 1935.
-
Thanks for your help ,I have sent you a personal message with more background to what happened to Nicholas and his friend ,hope you get it as i am new to this site and trying to find
how to use it.

This is a reference to a Nicholas CANTWELL, chaplain on board a torpedoed ship (http://places.galwaylibrary.ie/history/chapter279.html)
from the Galway Advertiser Newspaper in 1998
It contains the name and address of a person who corrected an earlier article
by naming people shown in a photograph.
The newspaper or the gentleman may be of value to you in your search

Good work dathai
I believe from Galway records that Bridget’s address was Henry Street, GALWAY
RENMORE is the location of an Army Barracks so Thomas could be from anywhere
I will check military for more info
Link to 1901 census for Birketts (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Kingstown/Mulgrave_Street/1320433/)
Link to 1911 census for Birketts (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Kingstown_No__2/Patrick_Street__East_Side/95614/)
as found by dathai
If this is correct this is most likely Brigid’s baptism record (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/1142640263935)
I've PMed with additional information that may relate to the living

Found by googling''Thomas Cantwell Connaught Ranger''
from The New Ranger magizine
no 8457 Pte Thomas Cantwell from Tullamore was luckier he survived the war went on to get married and have a family and ended up a postman in Galway city after he left the army.INCLUDES his photo.
Also what i think is the 1911 census of Gough Barracks Ferozepore,Punjab,India.
D Company
Private Thomas Cantwell age 23 Telegraphist,Kings Co,Tullamore, absent.
edit taken from the Great War Forum

Is'nt it very coincidental that a William Mulvoy age 18 in 1911 grandson of Mary Barrett is a Private in The 3 rd Connaught Rangers living at 15 Henry St, Galway.

link to info mentioned by dathai (http://connaughtrangersassoc.com/cra/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Journal2013.pdf) that shows a photo of Pte Thomas Cantwell

Oh my! Nicholas - Nixie to his family - was my uncle. He died many years before I was born and so I never got to meet him, though I did carry round a photo of him in my purse for a long time until it was stolen. I came across this site as I was searching for information on my father, Bernard (Barney) Cantwell. He was Nixie's younger brother. I knew my grandparents were Thomas and Bridgit, but nothing beyond that, although my father had said that his family originally came from Tullamore and that one of them had married into the Salmon family who were supposed to be local aristocrats. I'm speechless at all the hard work you've put in and how accurate your research is. Thank you so very much. If any of the Cantwells wish to get in touch, please leave a message here. Bernice Cantwell.

Dathai - you are right, Thomas (my grandfather) was a soldier in the Connaught Rangers and the children were: Richard, Robert, Nicholas, Bernard, Clare, Nancy, Marie, Patrick, Rita, Joan and one I can't recall.
-
And Bridie - I remembered!

A relation of my husband is Loretta Small and she married a Padraic Cantwell of Galway.
There may be some connection.

Hi
I know it's a bit late but I've just seen my grandfathers name mentioned in a post from April 2014. William Mulvoy. Did anyone want to know anything about him?
-
Hi there, sitting here at Easter weekend in hotel with my mother Bridie Cantwell who was reminiscing about my uncle Nicholas and I decided to google him online and turned up this excellent thread. My mother was 9 when he died but has a good bit of background to how Nicky came to join the raf and also memories from when the news was brought home to the family. Sadly due to the circumstances of ww2 and security Nicholas’s body couldn’t be repatriated to Ireland - so his mother Bridget “mud” and his father Thomas (my grandparents) had to wait several years before they could visit his grave and mourn properly. My mother has photos of the burial taking place as well as the graveyard at Benson. Happy to share if they are of interest. Regards Frank Dunne - Dublin Ireland.

Hello Frank - we are cousins. I'm Barney's eldest daughter, Bernice. So good to hear that Bridie is still with us and I'd love to hear more about what she remembers. I'll send you a message on here if I can remember how to...
I'm so glad Mud and Thomas visited the grave. For some reason I assumed they hadn't. It would be great to reconcile what Bridie remembers with the snippets my Dad told me.

Hi Beirnis,
great to hear from you, yes id love to sync up and swap the news! I'll look out for your message.
Hope all is well,
Regards
Frank
