Good evening Rootschatters. . . .
I am trying to find residents through the census years of a public house in Great Dockray (there have been different spellings of Dockrey) and I am a bit wary of the new address search in FindMyPast, if in fact there even is one now.
It is a famous (or as famous as a public house in Cumberland can be) building, which is now converted into two private homes.
I would be very grateful for any advice offered. Thank you very much.

Hi Geoff . . . and thank you to, and Westlass (I guess you are out towards the coast) - I should be OK now, I think - I like your little statement at the end of your posts, Geoff , very amusing . .

And thank you too, Jen . . . was replying to you when the other posts came through - very much appreciated.

Westlass - It has been converted into two quite desirable private homes . . . . I started this research because a canadian lady of 82 has purchased one for £155,000. The price is really £160,000 but she got a discount as she paid cash - We are wondering what happened to the historically important ceiling

I will try and find out , but as far as I know its a listed building and had to stay as it was , maybe your friend has got what was out buildings , at this stage you know more than me , and I pass the place on my way to work , and I am going to have a good look and see whats going on , regards Westlass

No, she is definitely in the main building - you must pass the Animal Rescue shop then - opposite the bookies and askance from the Two Lions . . . . you must pop in on a saturday morning when I am there - I manage it with a colleague . . .

The "listing" http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-72855-two-lions-public-house-and-integral-stabl
(That's the correct URL without an "e" at the end :))

Thanks very much for that Geoff - Penrith is a lovely little town with lots of historical building and a lot going on - unfortunately it is suffering a bit commercially with lots of shops closed

Hello again , Archives , Cumberland and Westmorland Herald , Parasols up at the Two Lions , Friday 17 august 2012 , Note to Me , read Change of use , planning permission more , Westlass

Are you sure the lady has not bought at Two Lions Square, 3 bed semi asking price was £160.000? The Planning permission in 2012 on the Two Lions was to carry out necessary work on the outside of the building. The windows at the back of the building were reinstated etc - Reason - To safeguard the character, appearance and integrity of the listed building. The building has not been for sale, nor split into two units. If you look through the windows in any part of the building, it remains the same - only work to take out newer extensions etc. Full details can be seen on Eden District Council website.

Good morning Jean . . . . that certainly provides food for thought . . . I am seeing her on Tuesday morning and will dig deeper . . . . she is certainly under the impression she is living in the refurbished Two Lion premises . . . . most of our shop volunteers have been to her place to marvel and I guess it's my turn next . . will report back.

Hi Geoff
That's what I had in mind too (earlier posting). The Two Lions looks a lot better now - it was on the 'at risk' register and was taken off in October 2013 after some outside work on the roof, and some inside work carried out so it did not deteriorate any further - English Heritage website says that the Grade II* 16th century Two Lions Pub, which sits in a conservation area in Penrith has been repaired. It had been previously left to deteriorate for a number of years - as your photo shows.
I would very much doubt that half of the Two Lions (which is a huge building) would sell for £155,000, as when complete renovation work is carried out it would not just entail putting plaster on the walls etc. The inside would have to be carefully renovated to strict Grade II listed building specifications to bring the building back to its former glory.
I have to admit to spending a good few nights out in the Two Lions when I was a young thing ;)

I drove up to Isle of Mull 3 weeks ago, stayed at W'haven Friday 11th and went close to Penrith (Jc 40) on the Saturday. :)

Evening All, I checked out the Two Lions and you were right, it is definitely uninhabited . . . the Lady in question lives just across the little green space but still insists it is part of the Two Lions . . .

Hello Kincaid , has she one of the two houses that overlook the childrens play area , they are built on what was the garden of the two lions , regards westlass

Hi Westlass . . . . you are spot on . . . . . I don't want to disabuse her as she is so thrilled to be living there.

Hope she will be happy there , and if she is , that's good enough for me , regards westlass

Hi All
I thought it might be that house - they look very nicely built.
The following link shows a picture (click to enlarge) of the amazing ceiling in the old building - well worth saving. With the work carried out last year when it was at risk, the whole building looks so much better now - especially the back of the building.

What has happened to the ceiling? It was the Lonsdale coat of arms. Surely it could not have been destroyed? The Hobsons are my ancestors. Just starting to research again after a gap.

Good evening Clare,
Nice you have reawakened this thread - I believe the ceiling is still there, the building, however, remains closed and must surely beginning to deteriorate inside in spite of the o'restoration' that took place when the New Squares was built . . . in fact as all the locals are aware practically all the new build stores remain unoccupied and must be costing the developers a fortune and the council a massive loss of council tax - I view the 2 Lions almost every day from the Animal Rescue charity shop . . .

Thank you for replying so quickly. How sad that the Two Lions is empty. Our town centres have been killed off with high business tax and stupid parking costs.Colchester is our nearest big town and I never go.

Good morning Clare,
I have faint memories of Colchester - when I was a young soldier in the Royal Army Dental Corps I visited a friend there . . . . Are you familiar with Penrith then, Clare? You seem to know about the Two Lions . . . I The moderator might accuse us of going off subject but in case you want to continue the subject my email is billco666@btinternet.com
I have only been here 14 years but find it an interesting town with a great deal of history because of its close association with the Scottish border.
