My Cousins and I are trying to put a name to the young man in the photograph. Dose anyone recognise him from their old family photographs or see a close similarity with a family member.
What we know is very little except that he was engaged to my Great Aunt Robina (Bo) Neil and he did not return home (possibly to the Midlothian District) from WWI. We think he was initially based for Training at Piershill Barracks, Edinburgh and served with the 51st Battery Royal Field Artillery which was to be part of XXXIX Brigade RFA. Many thanks in Advance

In what part of the Midlothian did Aunty Bo live? Chances are he was from the same area?
If you search CWGC and do an Advanced search just on:
Country: United Kingdom
War: First World War
Served with: United Kingdom Forces
Served in: Army
Regiment: Royal Field Artillery
Additional Information: Midlothian
There are 5 resulting names....may be a long shot (especially if he may not have been from Midlothian) but do any of them - names, address' etc - ring any bells, if you look at the full information provided for each soldier?
(The photograph may identify a rank, but he may not have been that same rank when he died)

Many thanks for your worthwhile advice. Will defiantly follow up and will check with my Cousin in Canada to establish what part of Midlothian Aunty Bo came from.

Just a short note to say that following your advice I visited the CWGC site. Off the 5 men listed 1 was married but one of the other men, Adam Hogg was born in the same suburb "Davidson Mains" of Edinburgh, where Aunty Bo lived for >20yrs. Quite a coincidence and I must admit it gave me goose bumps!
Will pass this info onto my Cousin whose parents she lived with.

That is interesting, Zapcon!
From the 1901 Census, the HOGG family were at Corbie Hill Rd Victoria Pl, Cramond - so looks like they were pretty much in the same area 18 years later. If anything comes of it, there is a photograph of Adam's headstone here:

Corbiehill Road is actually right in the centre of Davidson's Mains, rather than a mile or two away, in Cramond. At the time of the Great War, the population of Davidson's Mains would have been only a few hundred, so everyone would have known everyone else.
I note that Adam died a couple of weeks after the war ended.

Ambly, Hibee, Another coincidence and thanks to you both.
My cousins parents home where our Great Aunt lived was located in House O'Hill Brae which runs of Corbie Hill Rd.
Will let you know what my cousin thinks. Her Husband did his National Service in the Royal Field Artillery and is doing some research on his families side as they served in the RFA in both wars.
Now that we have a possible name to add to the photograph he should be able to establish whether Adam Hogg died from injuries received or was killed in a training exercise.
Could be a couple of weeks before I'm back in touch as we are heading to NSW for a couple of wks.

This map section shows the village at the time, with Corbiehill Road running nw-se past House o' Hill. Most of the dwellings then in Corbiehill Road appear above the "n" in Davidson's.

Have you thought of checking in the local newspaper for an obituary or condolence messages for Adam Hogg? That is how I found out the name of the fiancé of my great uncle Fred who was killed in WW1.

I took my own advice ;D but couldn't find any In Memoriam notices.
I did find a report of his death though. He died at the 1st Northern Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne "suddenly, of pneumonia."

The site is regularly updated (Home Page). If you're unable to determine if Adam is the one, maybe the owner of the site might publish a recollection / message remembering Auntie Bo and asking if anyone recalls her sweetheart/fiancé who was lost in WW1.
