Could anyone please take a look at the following baptisms please
the first is of 2 brothers, Moses Lea and John Lea baptised Symondsbury in 1767 and 1769, sons of Job and Martha Lea, at the end of each entry it has the name Saunders and what looks like 'als' just before

any thoughts on what the word is/means
thanks Linda

I suspect it means "alias" - and in this case would be the maiden name of the mother.

Just wondering why the son then took on the name Saunders for baptism of his children but used Lea/Lee in the census?

thank you
Alias seems likely but I'm fairly sure the mother's maiden name was Marsh
also it's only in entries for this family that the als is used

Hi,
Having looked again I can see that it is the only time that "als" is used - I still think that it is short for Alias - but not, as I have seen elsewhere, in this case referring to the mother's maiden name. Which would leave us with Saunders alias/also known as Lea - which would seem to imply that Job Lea, and his son John, used both names or were known by both names. Did the older Moses, John's brother, have any children, or appear on any other occasion in the parish records? Was there a Saunders family in the same neighbourhood? I'd be tempted to look for a connection a generation or two previously.

Going back from Moses baptised 1767 there are 3 generations I can find where baptisms are recorded as son of 'Saunders alias Lea' or 'Lea alias Saunders', with a Job and a Moses in each generation
I haven't added them to the tree yet as it was unexpected to find this odd name/alias combination
