Title: Shipping "Ashmore" to South Australia in 1884 - COMPLETED
Post by: Dalet on Monday 05 May 14 13:24 BST (UK)
Hi All,

Can someone tell me where the "Ashmore", which arrived in South Australia 2nd October 1884 originated from?

I have Sydney Lamb (born 1857 Adelaide), his wife Emily Jeffrey (born c 1855), and their children Edith, Emily, and Ethel. Another daughter Adelaide Ashmore was born Aug 1884 aboard "Ashmore" .

Cant find a marriage or birth of children anywhere

Any ideas and/or help appreciated

Dale

Yes Cando,

This is my family.

Mary Ann Lamb married John Paris from Mt Gambier - these are my wife's G G Grandparents.

As you can see Sidney disappears - I thought he had maybe gone interstate or even back top England then returned to SA later married to Emily.

James (1842-1939) and his children went to WA, his first wife died there and he returned to SA to remarry. His children remained in WA.

Would love to know what happened to Sidney - most likely died as an infant and death not registered.

Interestingly on John Lamb (1814-1861) death it has Edward Lamb (PR) as the relative - I dont have any Edwards in this family. There is an Edward died in 1890 in Mt Gambier - could this be a nephew.

Again thanks to all for your help - and if anyone has anything to add to my Lamb family please feel free.

Dale

Many Thanks again

The mentioned sister would be Rebecca - I think - who died in 1932. She is listed as living in Snowtown on her death record.

Another sister Martha born 1854 is not listed on the BISA - probably reasonable to assume she died in infancy.

Sadly we drove past Snowtown cemetery last year - didnt even know Martha was buried there.

Thanks Dale

I also wondered about this death as there was a John LAMB, with occupation bailiff who lived at Mt Barker and featured prominently in the press of the day.

Martha was receiving relief from the Destitute Board around this time so how could she afford to have a death notice published.  I doubt it is her husband.

I read some time ago that the burial records for this cemetery do not survive...need to re-check.

I have information on the Ashmore ship from 1882.
My great-grandfather was born on the ship and I have a copy of the Surgeon's diary I found hidden in the back of a museum.
It was written by Doctor Knight in 1882 onboard the Ashmore so I know what happened every day, what the sailors were like, the storms they faced.
I also have the crew list and 14 years of other research including photos.
My book ASHMORE is due to be released in August this year (2018).
If you know of anyone who can help me find the ship plans so I know how the cabins are situated that would be awesome.
Or where I could find the Captain or First Mates log books?
Exciting to find other people interested in the same ship.

I have heaps of photos and information on my Facebook group
