Title: Help with Military Family - Yorkshire, Lancashire and Guernsey
Post by: jeune-romantique on Friday 09 May 14 04:22 BST (UK)
Hey Guys,

I have a William Robert Trainer who was born in about 1853 in apparently Scarborough, Yorkshire.

He married an Annie Gilcriss (born Abt 1857 in Yorkshire apparently) on the 13th of May 1878 in Fulwood, Lancashire.

I have that he was in the 15th Regiment of Foot by 1879 as he has his first born in Mullinger, County Meath and his second in 1880 in Tipperary.  After this time I find them in the 1881 and 1891 census living at Saint Peter Port in Guernsey, Channel Island.

Sometime in 1891 they were back in England in Leeds, Yorkshire.

Then by 1916 he is in Western Australia, Australia with two of his sons. I can find the sons immigrations records (they went separately) but not William's himself.

If anyone could help me trace Annie or William back that would be great...I can't seem to find births or baptisms for them.

And I can't find William's military record for some reason.

Any help greatly appreciated!

1891 census says he was in the Guernsey Militia.

I think it says Sergeant Instructor of Military?

Thank you 'gortonboy'. I have seen that record - I'm not sure if it is her, but will apply for the record if I have to and confirm.

im surprised, given that he is a sergeant instructor, and that he appears to have served a few years ,that he hasn't got a pension record,,,if he has,,i cant see it on the service records on Findmypast.

Is it possible that there is no pension record because he moved to Australia between 1913 and 1916 or would that not have mattered?

On Ancestry there is a Medal Roll WW1 for William R Trainer Prince of Wales Own  (West Yorkshire) Regiment 17 / 587. There is also a tree that has Attestation Papers but I think it is wrong because he has the wrong wife on the papers Mary Emma Whitman. Take Care Lynette

That tree has the wrong papers attached!
The Wlliam Robert Trainer on those papers was aged 27 at attestation in 1914! ::)
And born in Hulme, Manchester!

Hi
I've just found this forum as I was searching for records of my great grandmother Annie Gilcriss.  I was intrigued to find others interested in her and my great grandfather, William Trainer. Are you relations?

I have the family tree for the Trainer family including all the relations in Australia, many of whom I have met.

Please message me if you would like any more information.  I am particularly interested in knowing what happened to Annie Gilcriss as my grandmother would not talk about her.  We do have a photo of her though as well as many of the Trainer family.
