Hello everyone,
I purchased this photo a little while ago in Strathalbyn, South Australia. I'm trying to decipher the address on the back. I believe the name is Mrs H J BLAIR.
If this is indeed a South Australian photo then she was likely married to one Herbert John BLAIR in 1915, the wife's name being Lavinia Gertrude HANLIN.
Herbert John Blair
Father's Name John Blair
Wife Lavinia Gertrude Hanlin
Wifes Father's Name George Hanlin
Marriage 27 Feb 1915 at Marriage Place Res Of Brides Sister Edwardstown in Adelaide, South Australia
Page N0 500 Volume No 262
They had one daughter in 1916, the only child I know about. Could be the girl in the photo?
Australia Birth Index, 1788-1922 about Mary Hannah Hanlin Blair
Name Mary Hannah Hanlin Blair
Father's Name Blair
Born in South Australia
Registration Years 1907-1916
Registration Place South Australia
Page Number 15
I'm really trying to decipher the address. It's likely to have been a small place, a farm or something similar. One of the words could be "Station" (second line, last word) and the word after "via"?
Does anyone know what sort of date the photo could be?
Thanks very much!

Oh I think I just found a big clue! I found the marriage for Herbert John Blair and Lavinia Gertrude Hanlin on Trove.
The Register (Adelaide, SA : 1901 - 1929) Thursday 18 March 1915 Page 3 of 12
BLAIR-HANLIN.-On the 27th February, at her sister's residence, Edwardstown, by the Rev. Thomas Dowding, Herbert John Blair, eldest son of late Capt. John Blair, of Liverpool, to Lavinia Gertrude (Levie), fifth daughter of George Hanlin, of Tuilkilkey Station, South Australia.
So the photo was sent to Tuilkilkey Station, but I'm still not sure via what place.

The last word looks like Terowie which is near Peterborough in the north of the settled part of South Australia.

Doing well so far! Thank you for all the help!
So the person in the photo, I think, is likely to be Hubert John Blair and Lavinia Hanlin's daughter, Mary Blair, born 1916, unless there was another child had by them.
The Blairs moved to Melbourne, and I'm trying to see if I can find a marriage for Mary, but I know it's verging on the dates when the BDMs stop being available.

What luck! I just found a photo of her from the "News" (South Australia) in 1935. Seems like she was a bit of high society.

Found her marriage!

Now I've found an electoral roll for Gavin and Mary Douglas. I'd wager a guess that the third Douglas listed is their son, James Roderick Douglas, as they are living at the same residence. Gavin and Mary also had a daughter in 1942, according to the newspapers, but I haven't found any more about her.
BUT! there happens to be a J R Douglas still alive and living at Surrey Hills.... I have a photo of his Mum as a baby, if I've worked everything out right!
It's almost midnight, so I better go to sleep, but this is pretty exciting. :D
Please, please let me know if you notice any mistakes I might have overlooked. :)

I have just found your post form 2014 - your assumptions are correct - the photograph is of Mary Hannah Hanlin Blair, my wife's mother as a child.

Hello Whyatt,
It's almost 2 years since your post, but I've just seen it.
Herbert John Blair was my great great uncle. His father John Macdonald Blair was my 3x great grandfather.
If you could get in touch I'd be grateful, I'm trying to find more out about Herbert.
Regards,
Caroline

Hello Caroline and Whyatt. I'm glad you've found this post. I obviously haven't been on here for a while either and it's just by chance that I've happened upon this. I'm trying to think where I've put the original photo. I have it safe "somewhere". If either of you would like it please let me know (*) Moderator Comment: e-mail removed in accordance with RootsChat policy,

Thanks for the offer but we already have a copy of that image.
However, I would be interested to know if the photograph was part of a job lot or whether otherwise there were other photographs that you suspect might have come from the same source.
Thank you Whyatt

Hi Whyatt
The photo was in amongst several unrelated photos in an antique/second hand shop.
