Title: Gertrude Walter's singer sewing machine
Post by: j9wills on Wednesday 21 May 14 20:02 BST (UK)
wondering if anyone can help please,i am part of a small history research group and currently we are researching a singer sewing machine which was bought by a members father in the 70s in newport. there is a plaque attached with the name miss gertrude walters and it was presented to her by the community of heathfield house for her many years service at the school in 1924 with the latin numquam otio torpuit neque torpebat written at the bottom.
we know a bit about the school although not much we would be very interested in any information or tips as to where we go from here especially as to where we could find out more about Gertrude
thank you

Hi

The 1911 census would be your best bet.  Because of copyright restrictions, lookups are not allowed on Rootschat.

If the machine was for long service, she should be there in 1911

Hi & welcome back  ;D

If you don't have a subscription to the 1911 census host sites at home (FindMyPast/Ancestry) check out your local library to see if they offer free in-house access to the library editions.

My guess is that she was leaving to get married. Is there a precise date on the plaque?

There was a marriage in Llanelly in q/e June 1924: Gertrude M Walters and Thomas R Williams

When you get access to the censuses have a look at this Gertrude Walters, born around 1890 in Cwmbran, at a college in Liverpool. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XWRB-WDC

Here she is with her family in 1901 [ I think the address reads Maypole Cottage, which is in Cwmbran

William H Walters    38 b Bristol   Grocer
Elizabeth A Walters    38 b Newport Sub-Postmistress
Daisy Walters            12 b Cwmbran
Gertrude Walters      10  "
Wilfred Walters    8    "
Austen Walters      7    "
Kathleen Walters    5    "
Madaline Walters    4    "
Elsie Mary Walters    1    "
Gerald Walters    3 Months "
Emely Woods    24          Domestic servant

From info on the 1911 I suspect there is an older child away somewhere.

Looking for 1891 now can't seem to find them...William Walters and Elizabeth Ann Greenwood married in 1885 in Neath.

"Scope and content: Heathfield House Roman Catholic Pupil Teachers' Centre staff register, 1905-1953; "

Latin: Nunquam Otio Torpebat.  After googling think in Latin it means something like
("He never relaxed in idleness")

I may be wrong thou  ???

The electoral registers may be a possibility to trace them forwards.

right been to the archives today and found out
gertude walters was born on 8th december 1890
attended notre dame secondry school southwark 1904-1909 then liverpool mount pleasant training college 1909-1911
she started her probation period at heathfield house 15th april 1912 and a year later her permanent position there
exams taken:junior oxford 1905,senior oxford 1907(honours),london metriculation(or it looked like that)1908,preliminary cert 1909(distinctions in english and maths) and final cert(distinctions in maths and theory of music and singing)
over the years she taught maths, english, geography, history and needleworkand singing to all classes
she left on 19th december 1924 the reason gave that she was leaving the teaching profession she was reappointed temporarily between march and july 1925 then reappointed in sept 1926(part time) and in oct 1926(fulltime) there is no date as to when this ended but there was a reference to her in the record as late as 1935
found it all very interesting and strangely proud of this lady as i read all this although she not part of my family but feel that during all this i have got to know her and hope we as a group can bring what we set out to do to a good conclusion just need to go forward now for that to happen which could be harder but we are more determined
