Title: Dublin address lookup request 1878
Post by: chrisscales on Thursday 22 May 14 12:08 BST (UK)
Is anybody able to lookup an address in Dublin city street directories for the late 1870s?

I am looking for references to Ellen Keogh or Patrick Keogh living at 17 Crampton Court, Dublin South. Ellen was certainly living there in 1878, not sure if her husband Patrick was still alive or not.

Thanks
Chris

Dublin Street Directory 1862 lists 16 and 17 Crampton Court as Tenements if they continued to be tenements in 1870s it is highly unlikely that you will find any listing for them.

Thanks. I'm not sure about that though, in Thoms 1887 the property is occupied by William Bryan, glass cutter, so whether it remained a tenement in 1878 is unclear...

If you enter 17 Crampton Court without any names into the location box on Irish Genealogy you will see some of the people who lived there in the 1870s unfortunately no Keoghs appearing.

Looking at a few old photos on the internet some of the ground floors were shops which would receive a listing.

Thanks - both useful to know. There must have been multiple rooms and families (ie tenements) in the property late 1870s in that case, as Ellen Keogh was living there on 15 September 1878, and given there is a Coleman family there December 1877, Hampton family September 1877 and 1875, and Horey family June 1878, seems unlikely there'd be such a fast turnover.

1901 Census shows 3 families sharing that address 5 rooms in total and one of them is still the glazier.

Glasnevin shows an Ellen Keogh of Crampton Court died 1879 age 53 using the search functions ''married or widow/er'' she comes up as married.

Well I never, thanks for that. Turns out I'd actually purchased the basic version of this Glasnevin entry a while ago but not been able to match it up with her, but now it fits in with the other information I know.

Very helpful, thank you. It shows her as a widow on the book entry though, so not sure why it's coming up as married...

I see it's an extended grave, now that could be a unpurchased grave with unrelated persons buried over a period of years, depending on the financial circumstances of the family.
It could also be a family grave and a full readout with book images would cost you 10 euro to find if other family members are buried there.
You are probably already aware of this but just in case you are not.

Thanks again - it only cost me 2 euro to get the extended but she was buried with randoms. But I did just manage to find her husband as well with some creative searching using their previous address. Thanks, you helped solve a very long-term conundrum!

My pleasure.
