Title: Moses Bateman born 1826
Post by: RodEast on Monday 02 June 14 13:57 BST (UK)
I am seeking information on the marriage of Moses Bateman born about 18 December  1825 in Broxtead, Essex, England.  According to the 1851 census his wife is listed as ELIZABETH born about 1827 in Walsall, Staffordshire together with two children Joseph, 1848, and Jane, 1849 resident in Shenstone, Catshill, Staffordshire.  The 1861 census gives a further clue which would suggest Elizabeth's maiden name as CADMAN as the return lists William Cadman 1843 Walsall Brother.  I have found two listings for Joseph, born 4th qtr 1848 in Stoke on Trent, and Jane, born 4th qtr 1849 in Walsall with the surname of Cadman but can find no evidence of a marriage between Moses and Elizabeth in spit of the returns stating married.  Any help appreciated.

Hi,

There is a marriage of a Moses Bateman -

q3 1949, Walsall Vol 17  page 287

On the page there are 5 men and only 4 women so perhaps the missing lady could be Elizabeth Cadman.

Need more looking at  :)

Not married seems to be a very good bet.

To confirm the surname of Elizabeth it would be advisable to purchase a birth cert of one of Moses/Elizabeth's children.

Not always a good idea to presume details with family research as I and many of us have found to our cost  :)

Birth cert of child confirms maiden name of Nelson which makes the entry in 1861 of William Cadman, Brother 1843 even more intriguing as I have not yet found the connection.  I am still on the case.

Marriage is as Elizabeth Melson as per freebmd her ref is 286 though and Moses 287.

There are only normally a maximum of 8 names on the marriage index so I wonder if his was just written down wrong - The GRO index does say 287

The marriage certificate confirms that Moses Bateman bachelor married Elizabeth Nelson spinster the daughter of Joseph Bateman but as yet I have been unable to find a birth for her.  The transcription must have missed her name off.  I cannot find her on the 1841 census but I am still looking for that and the connection with the entry for her brother.

Very strange! I decided to go sideways a bit

William Cadman on the 1851 census in Ercall Magna Workhouse - there is also a Maria Cadman there aged 8 (registered 1842) born Walsall - possible sister?

This Maria married a William Gee 1864 Rushall father listed as James Cadman

AH HA!

On the 1841 census we have at Ann Street Rushall all born in county except James and Sophia

James Cadman 45 Stone miner
Sophia Cadman 30
George Cadman 10 stone miner
Elizabeth Cadman 10
Lace Cadman 10 stone miner (might be Lance?)
Thomas Cadman 5
Sophia Cadman 4
William Cadman 10 months

HO107/980/13

And on FreeREG we have

14.8.1836 St Michaels Rushall

James Cadman Batchelor of Walsall to Sophia Melsom spinster of Walsall - no parents listed witnesses William and Elizabeth Lees

FreeREG also throws up the baptisms at St Lawrence Darlaston

George Melsom born 11.6.1826 baptised 26.11.1826 parents Joseph and Sophia
Charlotte Melsom baptised 7.9.1834 parents Joseph and Sophia

I have found James and Sophia on the 1851 census HO107/2029/657/19

Scrap that I'm not sure thats the right family there is the burial of a Sophia Cadman 29.1.1845 St Matthew Walsall aged 36 which would be the right age

I am now totally confused.  The problem of William Cadman arose from the 1861 census for Moses Bateman 5 Gresley Cottage Row Of Houses Cappy Lane Church Gresley Staffordshire where William is listed as Brother.  My first thoughts were because he was not a Bateman he must be a brother of Elizabeth but as she is a Nelson this does not hold good.  I may have to give up on this as now I do not know which way to turn but thankyou for your help.  If you have any other suggestions I will be very pleased.

Hi think you are a bit confused here

Elizabeths surname is Melsom not Nelson (mistranscribed/misheard/misspelt) more than likely her mother is Sophia who married James Cadman and was previously married to Joseph Melsom who was her father. William Cadman on the 1861 census is her half brother from her mothers second marriage
