Title: Edna Bailey
Post by: tuppence_123 on Saturday 07 June 14 08:06 BST (UK)
Hi there

I am trying to find information on the birth/baptism of Edna Bailey who was born around 1815.  The 1851 and 1861 census have her born in Edmondsham, Dorset and this is also where she married William Sherring in 1835 (where she is named as "Ednor").

Unfortunately the Dorset OPC baptisms only go up to 1812.

Without the names of her parents (at least her father) I can go no further researching this part of the family tree so if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Cathryn

Could she have been a Edith?

familysearch.org shows three Bailey couples batpizing children in Edmondsham between 1810 and 1820.
- John & Martha
- William & Hannah
- Mathew & Mary
May be worthwhile taking a closer look at all three families.

Matthew Bailey, the elder, of Westworth in Edmondsham, died in 1852 and his will lists his wife, Ann + children (presumably in age order) George, Mary (wife of Thomas Hibbard), Matthew, Edner (wife of William Shearing), Rhoda, William and Ann (wife of Joseph Oxford).

George seems to have been baptized in Cranborne, so you may need to look at their records too in your search for Edna.

Mathew remarried 1848 to Ann LONGMAN;

1851 Census
Edmondsham, Dorset
HO107/1854/256/12
Mathew BAILEY, 68, Head, Mar, Farmer of 50 Acres, born Cranborne:Verwood,Dorset
Ann, 54, Wife, Mar, born Compton
Ann LONGMAN, 24, Daug in Law, Unm, born Cranborne:Verwood
Job Longman, 14, Son in Law, born Cranborne:Verwood
James Longman, 11, Son in Law, born Cranborne:Verwood

Son George is living next door in 1851

1841 Census we have;
Mathew Bailey, 55, Farmer
William Bailey, 15
Ann Bailey, 12
Elizabeth Bailey,    55, Female Servant
Joseph Brewer, 14, Ag Lab

This is interesting;
Mathew BAILEY married Mary SHEERING, 25 Feb 1837, Cranborne, Dorset
Mathew BAILEY, Widowed, Father MATHEW Bailey, married Elizabeth HAYTER, Widowed, 18 April 1842, Edmondsham, Dorset.

Christenings to MATHEW/MARY Bailey, Dorset;
MATHEW Baily, 6 Jan 1809, Edmondsham
MARY, 3 Feb 1811, Edmondsham
EDITH, 1 Jan 1814, Edmondsham
JOEL, 15 June 1817, Edmondsham
GEORGE, 21 May 1820, Cranborne
RHODA, 9 Feb 1823, Edmondsham
WILLIAM, 7 Oct 1825, Edmondsham
ANNE, 16 Nov 1828, Edmondsham

William/Ann appear on the 1841 Census with Mathew.

Now there was a bit of inter-marriage going on here;
Was Mary SHEERING who married Mathew BAILEY in 1837 the Sister of WILLIAM Sheering?
Mathew Bailey as a Widower married Ann LONGMAN 1848
GEORGE Bailey married Emily LONGMAN, 12 Dec 1840, Cranborne, his Father was MATHEW and hers was STEPHEN.
Looks to me that Mathew married the Widowed Mother of his Son Georges Wife!

1841 Census

Stephen Longman, 49
Ann Longman, 40***
Stephn Longman, 14
Ann Longman, 14**

Thank you everyone for your incredible assistance!

I think I can be fairly confident in following Matthew Bailey and Mary (nee Miller) as the parents of Edna.

I had come across the several Bailey couples having children around that time but when the one child you are interested in isn't listed it is very hard to work out which are the right parents.

I checked the Cranborne baptisms but couldn't find Edna there either so it looks like she was either Edith and became known as Edna or else for some reason her baptism wasn't recorded.

However, I think the will of Matthew Bailey the elder is a fairly positive indication that these are the right parents.  Also, the remarriage of Edna which indicates she was the daughter of Matthew Bailey (this probably also gives the reason why I couldn't find Edna Shering's death - never occurred to me she might have remarried!)

Edna Shering was also witness at the 1849 Fordingbridge marriage of William Bailey son of Matthew, farmer.

Finally in regard to another point brought up by Trish, William Sherring didn't have a sister Ann but he did have one called Mary Ann, who I have found referred to as Mary Ann Bailey so the possibility of her having married Edna's brother Matthew is something I will have to follow up on (as she is not in the direct family line I had put her to the side for the time being).

Once again, thank you all for your invaluable help.

Given the information provided by the will and the second marriage I think you can confidently go further with your research back through Mathew's line. Good luck with the next steps.

Again, thank you everyone.  Have been busy over the long weekend here in Australia researching, cross checking details and expanding the family tree.  Seems the reason Joel wasn't mentioned in the will was because he died at age 14.  I think I have found Matthew's father and grandfather.  Mary appears to have died sometime between 1828 (when the last child was born) and 1841 (as she doesn't appear on that census) and I think I have narrowed that down also, as well as who her parents were.

I would not have been able to do it without your help!  ;D
