Title: Johanna Audley married someone called Martin
Post by: audbr on Saturday 07 June 14 21:51 BST (UK)
Hi there can anyone please help?

An old family letter suggests that a Johanna (Joanna, Joanne, Johanne) Audley was born in county Kilkenny, Ireland in 1850 and  emigrated to America (her parents did not). The letter suggests that she married someone called Martin (surname not known). It is not clear whether she married Martin before or after she emigrated to America.

Can anyone find any evidence to confirm any of the above?
Regards
Brian Audley

Do you know the immigration year and what state she went to?

Age slightly off but how about Martin Lyng and Johanna in the 1900 census:

(given the dates this couple seem to have either married shortly before immigration or soon after arrival)

Marriage of daughter "Nellie"/Helen gives her mother as nee Audley:

Erato,
Many thanks for your reply; unfortunately I have no more informtion about her. All the information I have comes from a letter written in 1930.

Jorose,
Thanks for your reply, it looks very promising as I know other members of that branch of the Audley Family emigrated from Ireland to Connecticut and Illinois. I will have  think about it in more detail and get back to you tomorrow

On the 1900 census which Jorose linked you to, there was a brother Alexander Lyng. There is a death record for Alexander Lyng which gives the parents names as John Lyng and Anna Walsh.
Alexander born 7 March 1870 and died 14 Nov 1927 Chicago Cook Illinois. Spouse :- Belinda Burial :- Mt Olivet.

Hi Sandra,
Many thanks for your reply to my post. I am primarily interested in demonstrating that Johanna Lyng was born Johanna Audley. Jorose has done this with Nellie/ Helen Lyng. It would be nice to find a few more references shoeing that Johanna Lyng was born Johanna Audley. A marriage reference would be ideal but a birth record of a few of the children would be just as good.

I have just managed to find a Passenger List for a Martin Lyng ebtering New York on the Britannic but cannot find any reference to a Johana Lyng or Johana Audley!!

I have also found in the 1901 census of Ireland a Martin Lyng with a wife called Johanna Lyng so I need to do a little more thinking to make sure I am following the correct Johanna Lyng. The family story is that Johanna Audley married someone called Martin and emigrated to America. I think we are on the correct track but I would like to find a bit more evidence if possible.
The three of you so far have given me a good start.

Thanks for your help

Brian Audley

Realised your interest was Johanna Audley but interesting that the Lyng family also seem to be from Kilkenny.

In the Chicago Daily Tribune from 13 Jul. 1905, in a list of burial permits that were issued, there is this:

Lyng, Johanna, (age) 50, 60 Grand-pl., July 11

Hi Brian, Johanna Audley and Martin Lyng were my Great Great Grandparents! Are we related??? I ordered Johanna's Death Certificate via Cook County Clerk's Office and will post it to my family tree on Ancestry.com. If you send me your email address I will send you a guest link to view my tree. Johanna's granddaughter, (*), is alive and resides in Chicago and is in her 90's!

Johanna is buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery with her daughter Helen Lyng and husband William Timothy Moloney (my great grandparents and (*)'s parents). Do you have names of Johanna's parent's or the names of Johanna's siblings? This would be a big breakthrough!

According to my tree, Martin's father was John Lyng and I believe Ann Walsh was his stepmother (Martin was born 12-20 years prior to his other 9 siblings).  I believe when Johanna died in 1905, Martin had his brother Alexander care for his 5 children (3 were teenage adults), including my great grandmother Helen who was 15 at the time. I don't believe there was much, if any, contact from Martin after that. They say he remarried and had another family but I have not been able to confirm that nor locate his burial...

Brian, I did a quick google and discovered the following:

"JOHANNA AUDLEY She was Born in 1850 and Christened, on the 29th March 1850 in the Parish of Inistioge. At the time of her Christening she was living in Ballycommon. She married MARTIN LYNG. Emigrated to the USA. She was of 1127 Nelson Street, The Town of Lake View, City of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois (as Johanna Lyng) in 1900. She died on the 11th July 1905 and was Buried on the 12th July 1905 at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. It is presumed that her Husband had Died prior to 1910 as three of their children were living with Alexander Lyng the Brother of Martin Lyng in 1910."
