Looking to trace G/Granfather listed in 1881/91/01 census for Durness in Sutherlandshire as Born in Halkirk, Caithness circa 1852. He was married to Agnes J Moffat , originally from Dunsyre in Ayrshire. I cannot trace any of his siblings. his parents are listed as Alexander Bremner and Jane Mackay.

Hi Lorna
Thanks for the info, I have been stuck with this one now for quite a while. As Alexander married in Durness, which is at least 60 miles from where he may have originated, there were no family connection witnesses on his marriage certificate which may have suggested a tie to a possible brother or sister. There are some 1871 census tie ups, unfortunately none tie up with his father, mother and himself at the same address anywhere in Caithness or Sutherlandshire.

Hi I think this is also my GG Grandfather. Check www.brebner.com and family tree bre19598
or google family of Alexander Bremner and Jane Mackay.
Was glad to see your message.

There are four Bremners buried in the cemetery at Arnaboll on Loch Eriboll - within Durness parish but some miles from the village. They are James and Margaret Bremner, and two children who died in 1885 - Elizabeth aged 7 and George aged 2. Not sure if that's any help.

Sorry, but I have lost the "thread". Which Alexander married in Durness? In either case, I believe, at that time, "Durness" would have been a parish (and a large one), not a village. He could have been married much less than 60 miles from Caithness.

Hi James
Good to hear from you. Hope you managed to get the link from www.brebner.com if not I can email you a copy? It goes back to 1810.
Alexander and Agnes are said to have had 8 children and all details and more are listed. My own GGF was their 3rd son Alexander b1883, he moved to Inverness and married Margaret Stewart in 1912. Lived 51 Chapel St. The Brebner site shows them having a son also Alexander in 1915 but they also had a daughter Rose first (not listed) who was my Dad's Mum. He never knew her though. He was another Alexander and born 1941. He died 2 years ago.
I'm 38 now and in Inverness.

Hi James
Quick p.s. think Alexander Bremner snr married Jane Mackay on 9th June 1837 in Wick. As far as I know they had following children all Bremner - they'd be my GGGG grandparents.
1. Robert b. circa 1837
2. Thomas b. c.1839
3. Margaret b.1842
4. David b.1843
(All born Wick)
5. John b. C.1845 (Thurso)
6. (Our possible relation - parents same?) Alexander though site says he was b.c.1848 not 1852?
7. Donald (Halkirk)
Alexander and Agnes would be my GGG grandparents.
Son 6 Alexander died 11th July 1932 in Thurso (noted as being a Shepherd) married 8th Nov 1878 to Agnes Janet Moffat (from Dunsyre Ayrshire - parents James & Jane Moffat) - Agnes died 3rd Nov 1941. Thurso.
Alexander & Agnes's children (all Bremner) -
1. John b 1879 in Durness d.1904 Durness
2. James b.1880 Durness
3. Alexander b. 1883 (my GGF)
4. Agnes Afleck Anderson b.1885
5. Ellen Elizabeth b. 1886
6. Robert Bremner b.1890 married 1925 in Reay to Margaret Waters Allan
7. Thomas b.1894
8. Lily Jane Bremner b.1897 (all born in Durness) - married 1924 in Inverness to James Allan who registered father in law's death - lived Lybster Reay.
Hope that helps and it is the same tree!
