Hi, I could really do with some help in finding out where in Ireland my Gt Gt Grandfather came from, when he came to Uk and married.
Patrick Loftus b abt 1811 co. Mayo. Was in Wolverhampton 1841 when he had son James born that year and baptised at the Catholic Church of St Peter & St Paul. Wife was Bridget McNally b abt 1821 UK town unknown or was it Ireland? 1851 census visiting or staying with Peter McNally in Caribee Street, Wolverhampton. Patrick was a rope spinner. 1844 son Martin born baptised at same church. Address - Caribee Island , Wolverhampton. Notorious Irish ghetto.
I cannot find out where Bridget was from and I have nothing on Bridget's birthplace or parents - other than a guess that in 1851 census Peter McNally could have been her brother or cousin. All I know about Patrick's early life is above and I don't know where to search for more info for his origins.
And help would be fantastic!
I have Terry Loftus tree on line which gives more info.
Thanks so much for any help you can give.

Hi,
There is a marriage in OND 1840 Stoke on Trent 17/220 which seems a little odd
People on that page include a
Patrick Lofty
Bridget Micannally
Bridgets entry has the same reference but place of marriage is Liverpool not Stoke on Trent.
I can t find her on Lancashire Bmds and there is a possible discrepancy of males/females.
I think possibly its just co incidence and probably not whom you are looking for.

Added www.staffordshirebmd.org.uk have them married Civil marriage Patrick Lofty and Bridget Mcanally

That's a great start Cathy, thanks! I'm sending off for the certificate to see if possibly them. The date fits and I've seen a lot of misspelling of their names...so fingers crossed...!
Really appreciate your help - the Staffordshire site is also really helpful and I didn't know about it before.
Thanks

The 1851 census states:
Class: HO107; Piece: 2019; Folio: 951; Page: 5
Caribbee Island, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire
McNally, Peter Head M 30 Ag Lab b Ireland
McNally, Mary Wife F 24 <place of birth blank>
McNally, William Son M 6 months b Wolverhampton
Loftus, Patrick Visitor M 40 Rope Spinner b Ireland
Loftus, Bridget Visitor F 36 Dress Maker b England, Town NK (not known)
Loftus, Martin Visitor M 6 Scholar b England, Town NK
Loftus, Mary Servant F 18 b Ireland
So I don't think Bridget is related to these McNally's?

Hmm - Bridget's surname is Mcnally on the records of children's baptisms so Micannally could be a mis spelling. I guess wishful thinking she is related to Peter McNally - I've not found any evidence yet, in fact I can't find Peter after 1851. I've sent off for the marriage certificate so will be interesting to see what comes back.
There's a Patrick Lofts in 1841 aged 25 in 'court' Stafford Street, Wolverhampton, ag lab. I'll see if I can Bridget in Stoke on Trent or Liverpool at this time - could be Patrick was lodging whilst looking for work....
Their last child William was born in 1856, 1861 census has Bridget, Married, living with children Martin, Mary, Catherine and William in Caribee Island - no Patrick - and in 1864 Bridget marries James Lymate. No evidence yet of Patrick's death - there is a Patrick Loftus in 1891 b 1816 an inmate at the Little sisters of the Poor in Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester (but that's a long shot!).
My main goal is to find out where he came from in Ireland but all other information is a real bonus.
It's very good of you to help and if you need any more information do let me know.
thanks again!
