Title: In Need of Help to Download a WW1 File From Archway COMPLETED
Post by: hettyhen on Sunday 15 June 14 02:32 BST (UK)
In need of some expert help please. :-[
Am attempting to download the record for William James HARRISON Serial No.10230.
Had no trouble with the Cenotaph Database Page but the Archway file only has "Preservation Master' and 16 pages , but no Derivative Copy.  Have tried different ways to download/save the pages, either too big and blurred or too small and unreadable, have even tried to Screen save but takes 2 saves to the page and misses an edge, so any easier method to save it would be very welcome.
Thank you
HeatherR

Hello...

There is a "Download" icon. It's a flat line with a downward pointing arrow (see attachment)

When there's no Preservation Master you need to click on each page individually and then download each page individually.

The downloaded file seems to be saved with a jp2 extension, not a jpg extension. Just try renaming jp2 to jpg. That should work but if it doesn't either a) open the jp2 file in photoshop or gimp and save it as a jpg or b) google "convert jp2 to jpg" and follow your nose.

Regards
Beg

I found if the only copy is a jp2, the resolution is so low that when enlarged it's unreadable. :-\  Didn't matter changing it to jpg or not, still same problem.

Hello Smudwhisk...

Would you mind clicking on the two following links. They're safe :)

The first link is the result of clicking on Page 11 of William James HARRISON's service record, which is his Attestation. I then clicked on the Download icon I mentioned earlier.

A 1.5 megabyte image file called 011m.jp2 was downloaded. I then just renamed the file extension from jp2 to jpg and was able to view it using Geeqie, my image viewing software. The image was high quality.

The second link is the 1.5mb jp2 file converted to a jpg using the "jp2 to jpg online conversion" website found at...

http://image.online-convert.com/convert-to-jpg (http://image.online-convert.com/convert-to-jpg)

My image viewing software was also able to view the converted file and it was also of high quality.

Click on the link(s), then "Download", then if you're given the option "Direct Download"

Attestation_renamed.jpg
http://www.rootschat.com/links/014ss/ (http://www.rootschat.com/links/014ss/)

Attestation_converted.jpg
http://www.rootschat.com/links/014sr/ (http://www.rootschat.com/links/014sr/)

Be sure to download both files to your computer and then try to view them on your computer. The website where I'm storing them (Dropbox) will display the converted file no problem but is unable to display the renamed file.

Regards
Beg

Hello All
Janette,  thanks for the links have printed the 2 records.
Beg,  got the Attestation_Converted.jpg fine and it is legible when printed out so will try your method with the other pages and hope it works for me.
Have only recently started searching for William, and find he left NZ, 1 April 1916 and died 5 October 1916 aged only 20.  Came to NZ with family late 1913 so didn't really get to make anything of his new life here.

My image viewing software was also able to view the converted file and it was also of high quality.

OK fair point, but the two I tried to download, which weren't WW1 attestations but another military paper, were unreadable because they were so low resolution.

I shall have to try and remember which they were and I'll post links to them.  I think they were Territorial Forces papers.

Hello Beg,
Tried your way of converting using "image.online-convert" on the "History Sheet", it took a wee while to process, but has come out clear as a bell so will do the other pages a few at a time.
Thank you very much for your help.
Cheers

Hi Hettyhen,

Thanks for advising the Moderation Team that you consider this topic completed, but with your permission I'd like to leave it on top of the New Zealand Board for a while.

It provides valuable advice to those struggling to download WWI Army Personnel files from Archway.

Hello Spades,
That's fine with me, a good clear and easy to follow method to solve the problem.
Cheers

Hi Spades...

In that case can I add the following really easy jp2 to jpg conversion method for Linux users...

1) Download each individual jp2 file to a folder, for example...

 \home\yourname\Archway

2) Open a terminal, normally alt+F2 then type the word terminal or the words gnome-terminal

3) Change to the above mentioned Archway folder...

Code: [Select]
cd \home\yourname\Archway

4) Enter the following command...

Code: [Select]
mogrify -format jpg *.jp2

Job done :-)

--

Mogrify is a part of the imagemagick package

You may need to install the imagemagick package from your repository. For example, if you Ubuntu...

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install imagemagick

Quite by chance I've found that Irfanview (which is free to download and install) will open .jp2 files and allows you to then do a save as jpg. ;D

Hi everyone,

It seems that the above issues opening Army personnel files have been resolved.
http://archway.archives.govt.nz/

I have done a few tests and all the random files I selected opened immediately.

Unless anyone is still having problems I'll close off this topic as completed.
