Why does Ancestry going down affect my Family Tree Maker as I have that down loaded. Could it be that I have them both synced?

Mine will open but wont let me go into my trees. I'm using FTM 2014 and that is synced as well. That is a nuisance if that happens everytime Ancestry is down.
have the spinning thing going round and round.
Yes I agree with both comment's it was meant as a joke :) :) I have used Ancestry for years and have found lots of family members with all the brilliant records :) :)
Yes of course you want it working. However if going on the daily price for the option to search millions if records. Then an odd day out won't make all that much difference. Also I am sure that there are records on Ancestry and FindMyPast that we would probably never use. We are still paying for those in our subs. Of course those members on here who don't have a subscription , get the best of both worlds when asking for help for look ups. Long may it continue of course that we can help others. We all like to help where we can.
I wish Cas I wish :) :) :)
A Yorkie born and bred Cas you have a good day

Absolutely nothing wrong with being a "Yorkie" ;D
Ancestry seems to be playing up again, :-\
Frank. (Yorkie through and through.)
Added.. When I was working in Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire they said I was a "Typical" Yorkie,....... Thick, chunky and too much of me made them sick.
Yes, I was in the middle of adding info that I got from a visit to my local FHC when it started acting up. I've had to do housework instead :(
They are suggesting here that it is a Denial of Service Attack
Both Ancestry and FindaGrave are down as I write this
Having speed read your link, as most of it goes over my head, I don't like the part lower down which refers to a permanent denial of service attack.
What does anyone get out of such attacks? What sort of people do such things? What a strange world this is sometimes.

The same type of people who infect PCs with ransome software or malicious software to use your PC to flood spam, etc, on others - as per recent media reports.
I see ancestry have admitted it was a DDoS attach - http://www.rootschat.com/links/0153h/. Not very much they can do in the circumstances but sit it out and wait for it to stop. The aim is usually to take the site offline not to steal data from them. Its unfortunately not that uncommon an issue. >:(
It is beyond me why people do this, unless to gain info and steal.
Cas
It's back on ;D

It looks as though another site has been hit:

We are continuing to experience technical difficulties with the JewishGen website. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your continued support of JewishGen's important work
Perhaps it is a protest against all the recent changes.

Now if it was findmypast, that may be more likely ;D ;D
Hi all
Ancestry Facebook page seems to be the best place for updates:

Seems they have had a DDoS attack. :(

Seems they have had a DDoS attack. :(
From what it says on FB it seems to be beyond their control. I'm sure they are just as frustrated as we all are, but I'd rather they took time and sorted it and made sure that all our data was safe rather than rushing it and causing more problems.
...................................... and then we will find something else to complain about ;D

Sandra
20 minutes .... errr two days in Australia :)
Please help.
I have been working on my tree in Ancestry.com for about 7 years, and have been using RootsWeb's World Connect quite extensively. Today that seems to have stopped, I cannot get into their wed site.
I am most probably very lazy using it, but it is a huge help.
Is it no longer available? Can I access in any other way?
Thank you. Peter Hall
Sandra working for me also :) :) :)
I always stay logged in, I wonder if that has made a difference? I'm using Ancestryuk.

I wondered that too, I also stay logged in and use Ancestry uk and its ok for me
PS probably the only one happy about this will be some dysfunctional outcast sitting in his week old underpants in front of a PC in his mum's house basement.... ::)

Probably related to some of us on here :) :)
(its the front end that a DDoS attack swamps)
I stay logged in too and it's still working for me................But.........is anyone else getting this message in Family Tree Maker when carrying out a web search...everything else is working fine?
Carol
Accounts are okay as is all our data & trees. These type of attacks are simply about "taking down" a site they have a some grudge against or, more typically for smaller sites, for attempted extortion from the site's owners.
These attacks are only possible due to the large numbers of PCs in the world without any proper virus software or firewall installed and working :-\
Pete
Ancestry Messages still do not open.

Surely near all have protective software on own PC?
Last figure I saw Cas (stallc)was that Microsoft reckon its about 24% of PCs worldwide that are unprotected.... unfortunately they are all over the place not just in certain countries so impossible to totally block ::)
if you click on a member you've sent a message to in the past and inbox option is there
8) you are right iloaus that actually works... the mind boggles how you figured that out :)
I am not that good with stats. BUT if peeps use the internet regularly, they MUST know to protect themselves/their internet access. We are in 2014. It cannot have gone down in the minority that maybe has no internet protection surely?
Ah the wonders of the net!I've been unable to gain access with Google Chrome and IE.However I tried with Firefox and in first time!

This incident with ancestry shows us how vulnerable we are in internet world. It appears we are lucky this time that we have not had any of our personal data and trees stolen, lost or corrupted.
I think many people may have learnt a lesson here...keep back ups folks!! Whilst preaching to the converted amongst many old school researchers. I still think (Judging by the number of people worried about their online trees) there are many still out there who rely totally on their online trees as their main storage facility.
Whilst I consider myself reasonably competent with the online world I still think sometimes there is method in the "old style" approach to keeping hard copies of everything or at least your important things.
I attended a talk at my local family history society last year and whilst the talk was interesting it was what the speaker said at the end that stuck in my memory. He held up an 8" Floppy Disk and said "I cant read this anymore because I had to use this instead" and held up a 3.5" HD Diskette and then said "I cant read this anymore because I had to use this instead" and held up a CD. He then went on to hold up a USB Pen Drive and spoke of Cloud storage systems and said "one day I wont be able to read these either". He then held up a 300 year old manuscript and said "I can read this though!" ;D

Hi Folks,
Just spoke to Customer Solutions Associate at Ancestry. Advice :-
Try using ancestry.com and you may have more success.
Worked for me. Well done Brian at Ancestry ;D
Happy Bunny ;D;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
The deleting cookies and cache of the site would have nothing to do with the log on. Different browsers have no effect either so William was lucky he "fluked" it. They are still working on trying to get ancestry.co.uk up and running but obviously the amount of people trying to access it is slowing things down and timing people out. Not as many people are logging onto ancestry.com
Sandra
Just relaying the message of the Customer Solutions Associate at ancestry - he called it a "fluke"
Sandra
I can log in but can't do much else. I have mail but it times out before it opens. Might have to think about another FH site.
Ancestry. com did work, thank you.
Cheers

To be fair, this wasn't really Ancestry's fault, it could just as easily have happened to any of the other sites.

Probably didn't really know what he was talking about. ;D ;D

Really. That's your opinion :P
Sandra
Is it the same denial of service attack William ?
Sandra
It seems the attackers have turned their attention to Facebook this morning.
Whilst of course such attacks in these instances cause inconvenience and frustration for us,taking a much wider view of these things the potential for disruption to much more vital services is very worrying.

Facebook was down for 15 minutes, apparently!
Seems to be OK for me also, (Ancestry UK), However, you are unable to export a GEDCOM file to your computer, it's been like that for several days. ::)
Frank.
My FTM is still slow to load, and wont open when I'm online. I'm now doing what was suggested earlier and only using it offline so it doesn't try and sync. Does anyone know if Ancestry are aware of this problem?
With the problems that Ancestry is having following the hacking et., of the DDoS virus:-[
Does make you wonder just how virulent this virus was.
Most websites when hacked can be restored and problems resolved within around 48hrs.
This has been going on for days now. And I do not think that it is down to Ancestry being lax. I truly think this was a very nasty hack/virus.
But what I do not get, is on FB there are people who know what has happened and are complaining like billio about not being able to access certain parts of Ancestry. One does wonder if they have any idea what happens to computer systems when attacked like this!!!
Latest news just says they are aware of FTM and Sync problems with the MAC version.
Frank.
Working again now-touch wood.lol
