I am searching for information on my grandfather, Travis Dodd. Specifically any information regarding his parents, including their names.
According to his tombstone in Mulberry Street Cemetery in Amite, LA, he was born March 12, 1903 and died July 6, 1969. According to his obituary in July 8th, 1969 issue of The Advocate Newspaper of Baton Rouge, he was the pastor of First Southern Methodist Church in Amite at the time of his death. I have contacted that church and their archives agree with that information.
His brother, Sherman Dodd, was also a pastor in Alexandria, LA. He also had a brother, James, of West Monroe, and a sister, Jewel Dodd McCaskill of Mt. Pleasant, Texas. Also according to his obituary he was a native of Montrose, LA (which I have seen listed elsewhere as Montrone). I have found his 1930 and 1940 census, but cannot link a 1920 census to him. Any information or suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks so much for your interest and time! I am amazed I received such immediate replies. I'm not altogether sure I am replying properly, and if not, let me know!
I do have adequate information regarding Travis Dodd's place and date of birth, as well as his brother, Sherman, and sister, Jewel. My problem is I don't know how to use this information to find their parents as there were no birth records recorded in this area of Louisiana before 1918. Any suggestions?

Just wondering about these people:

Thank you, @MaureeninNY! This has given my search new life! I have no idea how you thought to search for Wood. You are amazing!

I wonder if this is the youngest child from that 1910 census:

That would account for the brother James. He might be the one in Springfield Mass in 1930 with wife Mae B and daughter Patricia J. :-\

Thanks again, Maureen! That James does make sense! And I notice his name is Dodd again. I had found this history in my search: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/rapides/bios/doddsg.txt
And it does mention that Sherman and Travis father worked in a sawmill in East Texas. And the census that you sent the link for agrees with that. This history also mentions that his wife (I'm assuming Gertrude) died of the spanish flu which means right around 1918. Interestingly enough, if Gertrude is Travis mother, he married a woman with the same name.
Now I am looking for Dodd, Wood, and even Dood. There are a lot in Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana, which coincidentally are all neighbors. ;)

Looking for a death date for Sam (Lam) Dodd (Wood) and his wife Gertrude. The probable parents of Sherman, Travis, Jewel, and James Dodd of Louisiana. According to this history: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/rapides/bios/doddsg.txt
She may have died of the spanish flu of 1918. I'm wondering if they even posted the names of the dead for this illness because the numbers were so great. Were they even able to have proper graves?

I have seen death certificates from other states for victims of the 1918 flu, so I would think they exist in the states that you're looking in.
You can see links to available online death records by state at www.deathindexes.com.
