I am trying to track Australian information about Bartholomew Conelly, son of Catherine Burchell and her first husband Denis Conelly.
DENIS and CATHERINES children.
PETER JAMES CONNOLLY of Ballynatone
Baptised 6 Jan 1860 Castlehaven and Myross RC
MICHAEL CONOLLY
Baptised 12 Feb 1862 Castlehaven and Myross RC didn't come to Australia.
BARTHOLOMEW CONELLY
Born about 1864,No information about birth or Baptism. Information about his age is from the immigration passenger list.
MARY CONNELLY
Baptised 3 Nov 1867 Castlehaven and Myross RC
Catherine Conelly arrived in Australia on board the “Gresham” with Mary age 1, Bartholomew 3 and Peter age 6.
In 1893 Bartholomew married Rose Walsh #2501
they had two children that I know of
1894 Edmund Thomas Valentine Conelly
1897 Margeurite Philomena Conelly
in 1903 he was living in Brunswick with Rose, he was an Engine Fitter.
in 1905 Rose died in Footscray
in about 1930 he appears to have moved to Buninyong possibly retired but still describing himself as an Engine fitter in the electoral roll of 1931.
1942 is his last appearance in Buninyong still calling himself an engine fitter at 78.
Then there is nothing, I have checked at Buninyong and his death or burial doesn't seem to appear, though I could have missed an odd spelling of Conelly, nothing at Ballarat either. It would just be nice to know what happened to him.
The other question is what happened to his children, they are born, Mum dies and then absolutely nothing.
I think I will eventually find Bartholomew around Ballarat or Buninyong with a bit more leg work, but why did his kids just vanish. Did they go into an orphanage, get fostered by his brother or sister, I can't find any evidence for either.
Bartholomew was known as Batt to his wider family, my mum describes him as a bit of a mystery and says that he may have been in NSW for a time. That may have been after Rose died but there's no evidence for that.
The Irish end of his story is a subject for a post in the appropriate place eventually.
thanks, rusted

An online tree gives this birth for him, taken from FamilySearch so it is reliable.

Is this your family?
WW1 Thomas Edmund CONNELLY #1739 b. Brunswick 21yrs 2 months at Jan 1925
died Lone Pine 6 9 Aug 1915
NOK sister Rita CONNELLY of 51 then 601 King St Melbourne
Roll of Honour has father B. CONNELLY 46 Burnie St Clovelly NSW
-
I have wondered if the NSW thing was him, no real way to say. But it could be, mum did say something about prison.
The on line trees one of them is mine, Catherine Burchell is my G G Grandmother, until I really had a serious look for Bartholomew we had absolutely nothing on him, we knew he existed, thats all, then I found his wife and kids and various electoral rolls, thats as far as we have managed to go.
I have been to Buninyong but ran out of time the day I was there, at Ballarat I have had a good look at various times but can't find his death.
-
@ wivenhoe
I would have said no. But they just might be an aunt and cousin of Bartholomew or in fact Bartholomew himself, They are certainly worth investigating, My GG Grandfather was Edmund Henry Collas, Bartholomew moved from Brunswick to King St west and then to Footscray. so worth a look.
Edit: Actually the other way around, Brunswick then Footscray then 601 King St after Rose died. so yes it looks like they are family, thats a whole new branch of the family. I have no idea how they fit in yet. With the Clovelly NSW address I might be able to get somewhere with the NSW court records too. It also might give me a lead on where he went to die. fantastic.
-
The NSW/Qld ones that I see on the Australian death index are well before your chap's last sighting, and have the double 'n' spelling.

Death:
CONNELLY Bartholomew 88yrs d. 1953 at RANDWICK reg'd ROCKDALE #9728

Wow, well done and thank you.
That is absolutely awesome people. I have pored over this for ages, I have even looked at a lot of the records but never connected them or discarded them as being wrong. Isn't it amazing how you see something but don't make a connection or don't have a connection at the time, but when its pointed out you just kick yourself for not seeing the bloomin obvious.
At this stage all I have to do is get to the bottom of the court and prison business and it will be all wrapped up.
Judith I think I can do without those divorce papers, Thanks anyway.
Thanks, Rusted

Thanks again, that all looks good. (excellent actually)
The court notice in 1905 doesn't appear to be him, around that time my Bartholomew seems to be very much around West Melbourne and Footscray with a young son and daughter.
A half brother and a half sister were living in religious orders in NSW so may have picked up on the name from the newspapers and the rumour of his misdeeds just spread.
The only thing that is still missing is a death for Margerita Philomina Connelly/Meaney/or another married name?
Cheers, rusted

Just to revisit this.
We have Bartholomew Conelly's Death cert. after a very long wait from NSW BDM. I was hoping that it might throw some light on what Rita had been doing, unfortunately it just gives her name as Margeurite P. no surname. I have searched everything I could find to see if she remarried and when she died, but can't find anything. Incidentally Bartholomew died at 21 Dutric (Dutruc?) St Randwick, as he had dementia I presume this is where Rita was living.
I tracked a Rita Meaney for quite a few years around Randwick living with a John Meaney and wondered if perhaps she had moved over to Frank's brother but when I eventually found her death she was Rita Alice so not the right one.
Another minor question to arise from the death cert. Bart and Rose are said to have two male children deceased and a female. I can't find any other mention of this second son.
I haven't got Roses death cert yet.
Edited to fix Rita Alices second name
-
Bit of a long shot as I realise that the name is not correct but mistakes are not unkown. ::)
Ryerson has this:
MEANEY, Margerite Alice, died 23 AUG 1986, late of Randwick
Death Notice: Sydney Morning Herald 25 AUG 1986
I don't have access to the SMH but other R'chatters may be able to eliminate this death.

The above death notice is online:

This looks like the marriage for the above:
MEANEY John T J m. LAMMON Marguerite A 1914 WAVERLEY #8502

Thanks, Merlin - looks like not the right one, then.
-
Thanks for that, but no elephant stamp. ;)
Thats the Rita Meaney I spent quite some time tracking around Randwick, I called her Rita Ellen, a memory fade.

Dear Paul "rusted" & others;
I couldn't get personal message to work? Anyway;
My grandfather was Sir George Holland, Anzac first landing AIF soldier, state president RSL 1929-1950, National president 1950-60. My late dad and I marched in the Anzac march every year, and he was given a WW1 service medal with the name ET Connelly, #1739. When my dad passed away I was given this medal and was told his family/relatives could not be located so I needed to look after it and march with it at the annual ANZAC day march, melbourne. So I march with it every ANZAC day to the shrine. I have done lots of research trying to get this medal back to family but have had no luck. My research information is;
Edmund Thomas Connelly/Conelly 4th battalion AIF Killed in Action 6-9/8/15, joined 12/1/15, age 21, labourer. Roman Catholic. Place of birth Brunswick.
Embarked Sydney 17/3/15, ship Shropshire A9, lived at 25 King St Melbourne. I have gone to this building many times but cannot source what its history was at that time; hotel? Boarding house? Next of kin Rita Connelly.
An old address is listed as 15 Rae plce Darlinghurst, Sydney.
A corporal “Gunner” of D company 4th battalion AIF stated Connelly was taken prisoner and never seen again. My grandfather’s nickname was “gunner” Holland??!
Edmund had another middle name; Valentine. Born 1894. Dad – Bartholomew, mum – Rose (Walsh)
I would like to get this medal back to “home”. If you or someone you know close to Edmund’s family wants the medal, I would gladly give it to you/them. I feel he would like to be home.

Grantholland
That is an amazing story and it just goes to show the value of a place like this.
I am not sure that I am exactly the right person to have this medal, I am a first cousin once removed.
There may be closer links to him in the line of family (Meaneys) we traced in this thread. But of coarse they would still be cousins or great nieces/nephews as he had no children.
My mother who is still alive may be the closest relative being a first cousin.
I think I need to contact some other cousins in that line and see what the they say.
I can understand how difficult it was for you to research him, it has been a bit of a battle which is why this thread came about.
Thanks again grantholland, this story really really is just amazingly amazing.

Happy to pass medal on to whomever shall cherish it.

Hello all, I read in awe of the hard work that you put into this forum. Rosball kindly got in touch with me via social media. My name is James P Meaney the eldest son of John R Meaney who is the only son of Kevin and Audrey Meaney. My Grandfather Kevin being the son of Rita and Frank Meaney. Rita remarried (Salter) and lived in San Souci until she passed in December 1978. I have read the thread from end to end and you definitely have the links to my family. I can name all of the USA relatives, Kevins Sister Joan was a war bride and lived up until recently in NY and Florida. Thank you for taking the time to research this information, it provides me with family history that I was previously unaware of.

James, please make a couple more posts, the forum requires three posts before personal messages can be exchanged.
