My grandfather had written on the back of this photo that this is his mother and two of his sisters in 1908 outside Cundall Vicarage. My g grandfather was Vicar of Cundall in North Yorkshire for 10 years (so I suppose the earlier "MERRY children in garden" photo was also at Cundall Vicarage.
Makes me wonder if the reason we have such photos is that my g grandfather had his own camera. Wonder what that looked like and how he processed his photos. Just musing!!
If you talented folks could give this a brightening up after 106 years, it would be most appreciated! If there is anything I can change regarding the size or format, please do let me know. The original is 4x6 so I tried this time to format it accordingly. However, to meet the 500K requirement for posting, I had to lower the quality quite a bit from the original.
Thanks,
Louise Merry Larson

Thank you all. I was gone for a few hours and can't believe all the restorations that came in! You are great. And, yes, I DO feel quite lucky to have a nice selection of photos. Like most of us, though, I sure wish I was interested in my family history at a time when I could have asked more questions about those in them and preserved even more! Thanks to your efforts, these will be with us for a long time!

Beautiful photo Louise.
I expect your grandfather may have had an early one of these:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownie_(camera)
Box Brownies were around for many years and can still be picked up at antique shops, second hand dealers etc. (whether or not the film would still be available sadly I doubt it). They are known for taking very nice photographs, as can be seen in your examples.
Regarding processing, I expect he would have sent the film away for processing - I'm sure there will be information about that somewhere on the web. :)

Thanks so much for the great restorations and the information on the camera. I had no idea they had those box cameras as early as 1900. That's very possible this is what he was using...and why we have so many photos!! I can remember my grandfather having some sort of wooden light box (I still may have it) that looked homemade for exposing negatives and making Christmas cards. Perhaps he got interested in photography from his father. Thanks again!

Thank you all for your restorations. I am not sure that I thanked everyone as I had to leave for an emergency work assignment and have been gone for the last fortnight. So, once again many thanks.
Re: the Sutcliffe comment....interestingly, this same family did have him photograph them in Scarborough. We think that is pretty special!
