Title: New BT email system
Post by: sillgen on Friday 04 July 14 08:01 BST (UK)
I have just been changed from the BT Yahoo email to plain BT.   It is driving me mad as it logs me out every half hour, even if I am in the middle of writing an email.    I get error messages saying "The host has not been found" when I try to send emails but after two or three attempts it will send them. Is anyone else having problems?
Any solutions?

Hello sillgen

We are with BT.Our email is still BT Yahoo.

I maybe wrong, but I would have thought if any changes were taking place we would have been informed.

Maybe an idea to phone BT.
We had an email, but I didn't feel happy,it turned out to be fake ???

"We are with BT.Our email is still BT Yahoo."

Not for much longer.

On the email login page of my setup you have two boxes to fill in with email address and password. There is then a blue bar to push to login with.

HOWEVER under this bar is a tiny tick box which keeps me logged in for some days.

Hope this helps

I got swapped over last week & had all sorts of issues including those you mention.
I shot off a complaint straight away & to be fair they did ring me back the following day or at least their Indian takaway did & told me they were aware of the problem & would have it fixed in 24 hours.....yeah, right.
On hearing that I immediately downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird & have all my emails transferred to that & have had no problems.
Goodbye Yahoo.

Mozilla Thunderbird sounds good.  Thanks for that.  I have ticked the keep me logged in box and it makes no difference.

Hi
I don't appear to have been changed over yet. Can someone in very simple language explain what Mozilla thunderbird would mean please. I have googled it but  does it mean it simply opens emails using that or does it mean you change your email address?
I have other email addresses I use for work that aren't through BT but my BT one is quite useful so I'd quite like to keep it.
Thanks.

BT will still be your email provider.
Thunderbird will move your emails from Yahoo so you can use that to view them.
You can move multiple email addresses + folders & address books.
You can also send emails from Thunderbird using your existing addresses.

Hi Jim

It's not quite clear when I read about it. Is it online e-mail, as say gmail is,  or is it the retrograde download type  (with Pop, etc) as Outlook, etc. is?

PS - been looking at this:

That link looked quite straightforward until it got to the POP server name bit.  I wouldn't have a clue what to put there.   Why are computers so complicated?

As soon as I saw POP, I shuddered - it took me back to my very early days of e-mail on dial up - 1995 or thereabouts  ::)

Yukkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

When it happens, I'll use my non-BT ones  and keep BT in mothballs!

POP is still the original primitive incoming email protocol (post office protocol)

If you google email settings for your particular isp/email provider there should be a
help/faq page explaining all the required settings.

POP = post office protocol (incoming email)
SMTP = simple mail transfer protocol (outgoing email)

Your pop setting may look like:
pop.mail.yourisp.com or mail.yourisp.com

Your smtp setting may look like:
smtp.mail.yourisp.com or mail.yourisp.com

Hope this helps

I found it easy to set up. If you can set up Yahoo you can do this as there's no difference in that respect.

Many thanks.  Seems to have worked and Thunderbird is now trying to download nearly 20,000 emails.  I knew I should have deleted some!

How to export/import address book:
http://its.isber.ucsb.edu/guides/how-import-and-export-your-address-book-thunderbird
You'll need to convert it to an .ldf file after export.

Just another query ..

Jim and Andrea - do you access your e-mai via this :

If not, it seems a bit long winded ::)

To access mine I'm directed to the BT homepage where I have to log in. I'm then directed to that page & then I have to log in again & then I can access my emails....that's if it doesn't time out, then I have to start again & if BT lose the connection I have to start again again.
With the old Yahoo when I clicked on emails it went to my emails which BT doesn't want us to do anymore.

I just go in via the link Gadget showed and it does not ask for a password when it cuts me out - will not use it now though as Thunderbird is so easy and I can put all my various email addresses on it.

Would I have to set up Thunderbird for each e-mail or just the primary one?

Once you have downloaded Thunderbird it asks you to say which email address you want to add.    You have to add each one separately though.   It did already know the answers to all the difficult questions - I chose POP.

Thanks - we only tend to use 2, although I think I have added more over the years  ::)

I'll bookmark this thread for the future!

I already have a 'BTid' for bills  ;D

The Tbird email client can export address books in the standard LDIF file format as well as
comma separated or tab delimited text files. Ideal for manually editing if needed.

It can also import in the same file format. Always keep a backup of your address book it makes it easy to import into a new email client if you so wish to change.

Hope this helps

BT uses .csf file type which can't be imported into Thunderbird without converting it first.

I was switched over today and, as yet, can't make too many comments (complaints?) about it.

However, 2 immediate problems are:

1. It logs me out after just a couple of minutes so not looking forward to trying to compose/send an email.

2. Notified of reply to a Rootschat topic I've contributed to but when I click on the link to view it absolutely nothing happens.   However, if I click on the 'Unsubscribe' link (just checking to see if that link worked) it takes me right there.   Why can't I open the link to view the reply?

Hi Annette

If you download something (free) like Mozilla's Thunderbird :-

1) you would then be composing off-line (with different s/w) and  will not apply
2) you would be reading off-line (etc) plus option/add-ons available can restrict/free them up (+ your anti-virus/malware settings)

Yep same here.
I didn't bother to even guess what it might be, I just left & went elsewhere.

Perhaps a moderator has moved or deleted the topic so the link is no longer relevant.

No, it's definitely not that.   This is one of the threads I've contributed to.

Right now, I do not see why I should have to download something else in able to view it as usual.   It's a fault of the new BT mail and needs to be sorted.

Will contact BT.

Are you logging in via your BTId or via the e-mail link?

BT are aware of the fault & will tell you they will fix it....tomorrow.

And I'm guessing tomorrow never comes......

Gadget, I'm logged into BT to read my emails and then clicking on the link in the rootschat email as I always did.   The link in any rootschat reply to view the latest post just doesn't work now (yet the link to unsubscribe does should I want to do that).   Other email links are working but just not the one for rootschat!!

Have emailed BT but Jim says they are already aware of the problem!!

Although it takes a little getting used to I can put up with changes for the better.   However, if the new system won't allow me to do something that I did before how is that 'better' for me?

Not happy.

I don't have the notification links sent to me - just look at the New Replies link at the top of the Forum page each time and that brings them all up.
I have abandoned BT.com, as it still logs me out every few minutes, and am happily using Thunderbird to get my BT emails.   It is much better.

Are they changes for the better or are they just saying they are.
Are these changes just to make life easier for BT.
Is it just to allow them to rake in more revenue from the ads we're forced to negotiate before we can see our emails.
Answers on a postcard if you're with BT.....it's quicker.

Apparently to do with migrating e-mail addresses from Yahoo.

They've said sorry so that's all right then.
They haven't said anything about customer compensation.
Their new site's still rubbish.
